New learning spaces for a new pedagogical design

Nicolas ROLAND, ULB Podcast, Université de Bruxelles So far, the arrangement of teaching and learning spaces in academic institutions has been usually based on a transmissive pedagogy and on an over-valuation of face-to-face teaching methods. As a result, we have noticed a mismatch between learning spaces and students’ digital practices as well as a certain rigidity towards more active teaching methods. By developing the close relationships tying space to digital technology and the stakeholders, this communication aims to show that the evolution of teaching and learning practices requires a substantial rethinking of academic spaces. In auditoriums, as well in study places, teachers and students indeed need spaces allowing them to create new learning experiences (social interaction, group work, etc.).

1) Robert Reuter and Gilbert Busana from the University of Luxembourg presented a project-based approach for preparing future teachers to strategically use educational technology. 2) The goal was to develop pre-service teachers' technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge (TPACK) by having them complete a project where they address an educational problem by designing a technology-integrated learning scenario. 3) The presenters discussed challenges with the approach, such as students focusing on technology over pedagogy and struggling to identify authentic problems, as well as conclusions that while students learn to design meaningful lessons, they may not feel ready to teach with technology broadly.

Learning Objects, a Cengage Business Unit, is making significant strides to bridge this gap by designing and delivering OER-based courseware for colleges and universities. In this session, we provide an overview of our efforts to provide instructors, curriculum designers, and academic leaders with reliable, high quality, effective, learning materials that are easy to implement, support, and scale to large numbers of students. In doing so, we are constantly evaluating (together with our institutional partners) the balance between affordability, total-cost-of-learning, and learning outcome achievement. We provide some early insights into this process and the broader LO / Cengage OER strategy.

Real Engagement, Real Enrichment, Real Experience: Technology-facilitated Aut...

This document describes a project using technology-facilitated authentic group work to teach linguistics students. Students worked in groups on a real-world project to create a website promoting linguistics using Google tools like Google Sites, Docs, and Hangouts. This allowed for collaboration across groups. The project gave students independence, developed skills like project management, and resulted in a useful end product for an external audience. Both students and academics found the approach very effective for motivating students by giving them ownership and experience with an authentic task.

Open Education Global (OEGlobal)

Learning analytics is the most known type of data collected from specific technological environments that allow educators to evaluate how students are learning within a learning context. However, there are more types of data available, less-explored, that may contribute to better design educational practices. These include design analytics, which are the metrics of design decisions and related aspects that inform learning designs. Laia Albó, from Universitat Pompeu Fabra, will talk about how visual representations, authoring support, and design analytics can aid teachers in designing for learning in complex scenarios that blend the use of different spaces for learning and different types of technological tools and resources, e.g. Massive Open Online Courses. This presentation is based on her PhD thesis work, defended in November 2019.

This session presented the lessons learned as well as the outcomes of evaluations undertaken for 20 prototype projects to enhance the First Year Experience that were implemented in three higher education institutions in Dublin in 2015-6 (Dublin Institute of Technology, Institute of Technology Tallaght and Institute of Technology Blanchardstown).
