There is no single model that describes how marine biodiversity and ecosystems are fairing or predict how they will change in the future under increasing anthropogenic pressures. Thus there is no unique set of Essential Ocean Variables (EOVs) for biological components of the ecosystem that will satisfy the scientific understanding needed to support and monitor management actions. Yet there is a need to come to international agreement on a set of variables that can be developed globally to support advanced and advancing countries and international conventions in understanding and managing the marine environment. The DPSIR framework is a commonly accepted framework used to identify the information needs to understand and manage human impacts on the environment and provides one high level model that can guide the process to identify EOVs. It is a complex space with many existing initiatives that we need to integrate with and build on. In this talk we are seeking input and feedback on our early progress in filling in this framework:
D what are the societal questions, sectoral trends, national and international obligations and that Drive the need to monitor marine biodiversity and ecosystem health
P what are the human Pressures affecting the environment that are or will impact marine biodiversity and ecosystem health

In farming, the outcome of critical decisions to enhance productivity and profitability and so ensure the viability of farming enterprises is often influenced by seasonal conditions and weather events over the growing season. This paper reports on a project that uses cutting-edge advances in digital technologies and their application in learning environments to develop and evaluate a web-based virtual ‘discussion-support’ system for improved climate risk management in Australian sugar farming systems. Customized scripted video clips (machinima) are created in the Second Life virtual world environment. The videos use contextualized settings and lifelike avatar actors to model conversations about climate risk and key farm operational decisions relevant to the real-world lives and practices of sugarcane farmers. The tools generate new cognitive schema for farmers to access and provide stimuli for discussions around how to incorporate an understanding of climate risk into operational decision-making. They also have potential to provide cost-effective agricultural extension which simulates real world face-to-face extension services but is accessible anytime anywhere.

Understanding properties of food webs, such as their topology or stability, and the rules underlying food web structure, has been a key issue in ecology for now more than half a century. Because obtaining data on food webs has long been a hard task by itself, this research field has progressed slowly, and its dynamical aspects have seldom been empirically considered. However, technical advances, like next generation sequencing or the possibility of retrieving past ecosystems in sediment cores, have paved the way for massive data and the analysis of time series on food webs, while new models allow better predictions about food web dynamics. Making use of such existing data sets, this working group aimed at assessing the effects of biological invasions on food web topology, the fluxes of energy and nutrients throughout the network, and its ultimate effects on biodiversity. The working group has provided an integrative view on this topic, simultaneously tackling empirical, theoretical and applied aspects of biological invasions in food webs. Obvious applications will arise both from the numerous transports of invasive species and from the reshuffling of natural communities that is expected under global change scenarios. The working group comprised theoreticians and empiricists, biological invasion specialists as well as food web and host-parasite network experts, and benefited from existing experience in the field of ecoinformatics and massive data management in ecology.

The dynamic gene expression playing major roles in phenotypic differences in organisms are believed to be controlled by miRNAs. The objective of this work is to contribute to valorization de Nephelium lappaceum by the characterization of kinetics of drying of seeds of Nephelium lappaceum. The seeds were dehydrated until a constant mass respectively in a drying oven and a microwawe oven. The temperatures and the powers of drying are respectively: 50, 60 and 70°C and 140, 280 and 420 W. The results show that the curves of drying of seeds of Nephelium lappaceum do not present a phase of constant kinetics. The coefficients of diffusion vary between 2.09.10-8 to 2.98. 10-8m-2/s in the interval of 50°C at 70°C and between 4.83×10-07 at 9.04×10-07 m-8/s for the powers going of 140 W with 420 W the relation between Arrhenius and a value of energy of activation of 16.49 kJ. mol-1 expressed the effect of the temperature on effective diffusivity.
