In many stories, parallels to the real world can be seen. This is a way to connect the reader to
characters or situations in the novel, making a false story seem more realistic. In the book
Ruthless by Carolyn Lee Adams, a 17 year old girl named Ruth was kidnapped by a man named
Jerry. He took Ruth to the woods and though she managed to escape him, she still remained lost
in the woods with no way to get home. With Jerry at her heels, she plotted ways to escape the
woods, but that didn t stop the fear of being recaptured to continue to loom over her. The growing
lack of empathy and fear throughout Ruthless, are two real world concepts that were incorporated

terrorist attacks today. In the story, Ruth is in constant fear for her life because she is lost in the

I first got my start in linguistics by accident. I did not foresee that one introductory linguistics class
taken on a whim would change my life. What caught my attention the most was our unit on
pragmatics and semantics. From that class, I ve gone on to major in linguistics and even conduct
my own research in the field. I was given the opportunity to participate on a research team
analyzing children s acquisition of resultative adjectives. Our team ended up presenting at Eastern
Michigan University s Undergraduate Symposium. We also submitted an application to the 11th
Annual Cornell University Undergraduate Linguistic Colloquium, and were accepted to do an oral
presentation. Since I am working on a senior thesis at the moment, I have also been conducting
research of my own. I am studying the usage of the construction yeah, no and no, yeah. Though the
process, I have learned a lot about how to conduct research and also how to write an academic
thesis.
My plans for graduate study are heavily influenced by the classes I have taken during my time in

them to be one of the most popular and successful theater groups in the world today.
The Blue Man Group came into play in 1987. Creators Matt Goldman, a software producer, Chris
Wink, and Phil Stanton, both working as waiters, say the Blue Man Group started as a weekend

To fully understand the Blue Man Group, one must come to understand the Blue Man himself.
The character is dressed in all black and painted a special shade of blue created exclusively for
the group but, this is only a very small part of the true Blue Man. The character is very complex.
He is part philosopher, part clown, and part teacher. The three blue men take the audience through a
journey of complex ideas, concepts, and contradictions of life. One finds out how the Blue Man
perceives being human. The blue men have a great amount of positive energy and are very
welcoming but, the character does not speak in the way one may think. The blue men communicate
through their eyes and bodily expressions. The character stands for the human spirit, even though
