Nelson Mandela was born in South Africa and faced significant discrimination as a black man under apartheid. He was imprisoned for 27 years for his opposition to apartheid and leadership of the African National Congress. After his release, Mandela worked to dismantle apartheid and was later elected the first black President of South Africa in 1994. He spent his life fighting for democracy, reconciliation and equality in South Africa.
