Nelson Mandela was born in 1918 in South Africa and was one of 13 children. He became the first in his family to attend school and received the English name "Nelson" from his teachers. As a lawyer and member of the African National Congress, Mandela fought against apartheid in South Africa and was imprisoned for life from 1964 to 1990 for trying to bring down the government, spending 18 years in prison on Robben Island, before being released by Prime Minister F.W. de Klerk.
