Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and politician who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was born in 1918 in Mvezo, South Africa and faced racism from an early age. As a young man, he became involved in activism and joined the African National Congress Youth League. He advocated for non-violent protest, but later decided violence was necessary and co-founded the militant group Umkhonto we Sizwe. In 1962, he was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment for conspiring to overthrow the apartheid government.
