Nelson Mandela was born in 1918 in a small village in South Africa and was the first member of his family to attend school, where he was given the name Nelson. As a lawyer and member of the African National Congress, he fought against apartheid in South Africa and was sentenced to life in prison in 1964 for trying to overthrow the government, spending 18 years at Robben Island prison. In 1990, he was released from prison by Prime Minister F.W. de Klerk and in 1994 became the first black president of South Africa after he and de Klerk won the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize.
