Nelson Mandela was born in 1918 in South Africa and was one of 13 children. He became the first in his family to attend school and received an English name. After finishing his education, Mandela studied law and became involved in fighting against apartheid as a lawyer and member of the African National Congress. For his anti-apartheid efforts, he was imprisoned for 18 years before being released in 1990 to eventually become South Africa's first black president in 1994.
