Building Construction
Definition:-
A building can be defined as a structure broadly consisting of walls, floors and roofs, erected to provide covered space for different
uses such as residence, education, business, manufacturing, storage, hospitalization, entertainment, worship etc. Each city has
prescribed building byelaws to which buildings must conform. The building byelaws lay down norms like minimum front, side and rear
set backs, minimum height and area of habitable rooms, kitchen, bath, minimum area of windows, width of stair case etc.
Depending upon the character of occupancy or the type of use, different types of buildings have been classified in following groups as
per national building code:-
 Residential Buildings
 Educational Buildings
 Institutional Buildings
 Assembly Buildings
 Business Buildings
 Mercantile Buildings
 Industrial Buildings
 Storage Buildings
 Hazardous Buildings
Depending upon the character of occupancy or the
type of use, different types of buildings have been
classified in following groups as per national

1. Residential Buildings

Examples:-
houses, hotels, villas and apartment houses.
Residential Buildings:-
These shall include one or two private
dwellings, apartment houses (flats),
dormitories, hotels, villas etc..
Name- Mahindra united world college, Pune
Examples:-
Schools, colleges or day-care purposes
Educational Buildings:-
These shall include any building used for
school, college or day- care purposes involving
assembly for instruction, education or
recreation.
Name- Apollo Hospital Indraprastha, Delhi
Examples:-
Hospitals, sanatoria, nursing homes,
orphanages, jails, prisons, mental hospitals,
reformatories.
Institutional Buildings:-
These shall include any building or part there of
which is used for purposes such as medical or other
treatment or care of persons suffering from physical
or mental illness or disease, care of infants,
convalescents of aged persons and for penal or
detention in which the liberty of the intimates is
restricted. Institutional buildings ordinarily provide
sleeping accommodation for the occupants.

Name- Chennai Airport, Chennai
Examples:-
Theatres, motion picture houses, assembly halls,
auditoria, exhibition halls, museums, skating rings,
gymnasiums, restaurants, places of worship,
dance halls, club rooms, passenger stations, and
terminals of air, surface, marine and public
transportation services..
Assembly Buildings:-
These shall include any building or part of a
building where group of people congregate or
gather for amusement , recreation, social,
religious, periodic, civil, travel and similar
purposes.

Examples:-
City halls, town halls, court houses, libraries
etc.
Business Buildings:-
These shall include any building or part of a
building which is used for transaction of
business, for the keeping of accounts and
records for similar purposes..

Examples:-
Shops, stores, market etc.
Mercantile Buildings:-
These shall include any building or par of building
which is used as shops, stores, market for display
and sale of merchandise either wholesale or retail.

Examples:-
Refineries, gas plants, mills, dairies,
industries etc.
Industrial Buildings:-
These shall include any building or part of a
building or structure, in which products or
materials of all kinds and properties are
fabricated, assembled or processed.

Examples:-
Warehouses, cold storages, freight deptt,
transit sheds, garages, hangers, grain
elevators, stables etc.
Storage Buildings:-
These shall include any building or part of a
building primarily for storage or sheltering of
good, wares or merchandise.
Name- National Chemical Laboratory, Pune
Examples:-
laboratories, pharmacy
Hazardous Buildings:-
These shall include any building or part of building
which is used for storage, handling, manufacture or
processing of highly combustile explosive materials
or products which are liable to burn with extreme
rapidity or which may produce poisonous fumes or
explosions.
