GROUP-A
These shall include any building in which
sleeping accommodation is provided for
normal residential purposes with or without
cooking or dining or both facilities.
GROUP-A
Building under group-A can be subdivided into 6 categories -
A 1- Lodging or rooming house-
A 2 – One or two family private dwelling
A 3 – Dormitories
A 4 – Apartment houses
A 5 – Hotel
A 6 – Starred hotel
GROUP-B
The second category of hazard occupancy is
educational institute. These shall include any
building used for school college, other
training institutions for instruction , education
purposes.
GROUP-B
Building under group-B can be subdivided into 2 categories -
B1– Schools up to senior secondary level -
• Including building or building under single management
used for student not less than 20 in number.
B 2- All other training institutes -
• These shall include any building or group of building
under single management used for student not less than
100 in number.
GROUP-C
The third hazard category is institutional buildings- a building or part
of the building used for the purpose of medical and other treatment
or care of person suffering from physical or mental illness.
Institutional Buildings ordinarily provide sleeping accommodation
for the occupants.
GROUP-C
Building under group-C can be subdivided into 3
categories -
• Building or buildings under single management used for
housing persons suffering from physical limitations because
of health or age such as hospitals, nursing homes, sanatoria
infirmaries.
C1- Hospitals and sanatoria-
• Building or buildings under single management used for housing
custody and care children and the aged, such as homes, orphanages.
C 2- Custodial institutions-
• Building or buildings under single management used for housing
persons under restraints or detained for corrective purpose such as jail
prison, mental hospital. In this liberty of person is restricted.
C 3- Penal and mental
institutions-
GROUP-D
These shall include any building or part of building where number of
persons
gather for amusement recreation, social, religious, patriotic reasons
these are designated as assembly building. Theatres motion
pictures house, auditoria,
exhibition hall, restaurants, multiplexes, and underground or elevated
railways also come under this category.
GROUP-D
Building under group-D can be subdivided into 7 categories -
D1
• Building having a theatrical or motion picture are
any other Stage and fixed seats for over 1000
person
D2
• Building having a theatrical or motion picture are any
other Stage and fixed seats up to 1000 person
D3
• Building without a permanent stage having accommodation
for 300 or more persons but no permanent seating
arrangement . For example dance hall, night club.
GROUP-D
D4
• Building without a permanent stage having accommodation
for less than 300 persons but no permanent seating
arrangement .
D5
• All other structures including temporary structures designed
for assembly of people not covered D1 to D4 at ground
level.
D6
• Building having mixed occupancies providing facilities such
as shopping, cinema, and multiplexes.
D7
• All other structures, elevated or underground, for assembly
of people.
GROUP-E
These shall include any building or group of building which is used for transaction of
business for keeping of accounts and records and similar purposes etc.
courthouses and libraries shall be classified in this group. As the principal function
of this is transaction of public business and keeping books and records.
GROUP-E
Building under group-E can be subdivided into 5 categories -
• Offices, bank, professional establishments offices of
architects, doctors, and police station.
E1
• Laboratories, research establishment , libraries.
E2
• Data processing centers, Information technology parks,
call centers.
E3
• Telephone exchange
E4
• Broad casting stations and TV station, Air Traffic control
towers.
E5
GROUP-F
This shall include any building or part which is used as used as shops, markets, for
display and sale of goods either wholesale or retail.
GROUP-F
Mercantile building is subdivided into 3 group :
F1- Shops stores departmental store
markets with area up to 500m2
F2- Shops stores departmental store
markets with area more than 500m2
F3- Underground shopping centers,
storage and service facilities incidental to
sale of mercantile and located in the same
building.
GROUP-G
Group-G Is industrial building which means any building in which
products/materials of all kind and properties are fabricated, assembled,
manufactured or processed.
GROUP-G
Building under group G can be subdivided into 3 categories -
G 1-
G 2-
G 3-
• Building used for
low hazard
industries
• Building used for
moderate hazard
industries
• Building used for
high hazard
industries
GROUP-H
Group-H : is storage which means any building used for storage of goods including servicing,
processing or primarily for the storage or sheltering of vehicles or animals. For example
warehouse, cold storage, store houses, garages ,stables .
GROUP-J
Group-J is hazardous any building which is used for the storage, handling and
manufacture or processing of highly combustible or explosive material / products
which are liable to burn with extreme rapidity or which may produce poisonous fumes
or explosions during storage are classified under this category.
