Glory Essay
Glory The movie Glory was a wonderful depiction of the group of men involved in the 54th
Massachusetts colored regiment. The men of the 54th regiment were part of the first black
regiment to serve in the U.S. military and were all volunteers. Lead by twenty three year old Robert
Gould Shaw these men were held a high amount of pride, enthusiasm, and bravery as they willingly
fought against all of the racial harshness of the U.S. military system. The men of the 54th regiment
put up with stereotypes and unacceptable training conditions while being consistently being
challenged to actually stay in the military and not desert. Glory depicts all of the issues that
surrounded the 54th regiments black solders and white captions with amazing... Show more content

But Searles repeatably fought the encouragement to go home and stayed to fight along side his
fellow troops (even after being wounded and given permission to be sent home). In fact Searles
seemed to be encouraged by everyone at one point or another to give up on his service to the
54th regiment. I also found him very interesting in refusing to change his ways to fit in. Tripp
nicknamed Searles snowflake due to his upbringing and personality. But even with the nickname
snowflake Searles did not change his personality to fit in with the other men. He did continue to
try to incorporate himself into being a solder rather then changing who he was to become a
solder. Coming from his implied previous lifestyle it seemed that Searles was the furthest away
from his comfort zone especially when he had to take harsh orders from Shaw. Searles was
inspirational to me because even though he was out of place and encouraged to quit, he continued
to value being part of the 54th regiment. Due to Glory s great depiction of the 54th regiment I this
movie should be shown to students next semester. Glory helps students with the visualization the
the men of the 54th and what it was like from their different view points. The different view points
of the 54th regiment are all well balanced and carefully crafted. I believe that because of Glory s

Symbolism In Caged Bird
Word Choice, Point of View, Metaphor, Symbol and Tone in Maya Angelou s
Caged Bird
By solely reading the tittle of the poem, the reader might generally associate it with symbolism, a
condition where limitation exists instead of freedom. After reading the whole stanza and a little
background of the poet, however, the reader might connect this with the past ethnicity incident
between black and white people of America which in this poem is represented as extended
metaphor in comparison and contrast between caged bird (black people) and free bird (white
people). I believe that this poem depicts a story of the struggle to defend right from persecution. By
examining each stanza of the poem, through this essay, I will signify that beneath the poem ... Show

The free bird is allowed to think freely out of the box and has all the optimisms and occasions
that the caged bird doesn t. Even, the free bird names the sky his own which seems like it links
back to the last line in the first stanza dares to claim the sky . The nature is also described as a
very peaceful and soothing sighing trees / dawn bright lawn . While the caged bird is painted as
image of dreams which cannot be fulfilled for certain reasons. The line but a caged bird stands on
the grave of dreams / his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream , in which the grave can be the
symbol of death, might represent the circumstance where dreams cannot be fulfilled and become
nightmares instead. The metaphor graves of dreams shows vicious and miserable illustration of
hopes. These two stanzas seem like spotlighting the contrast between the living of two birds. Out
of the contrast, auditory devices of alliteration and assonance are also used here probably to give a
continuous flow of the poem such as in fat worms waiting and winds soft through the sighing

HISTORY OF ANIME: Osamu Tezuka
________________________________________ (picture)
Dr. Osamu Tezuka: Legend. by Brian Cirulnick
Walt Disney of Japan , God of Comics , A Legend in his Own Time . Many of these phrases will
forever be used to describe Dr. Tezuka, but mere words cannot even begin to describe his work,
or how it changed an industry, or even the incredible wealth of material produced by this one man.
As I began to research this article, friends sent me copies of magazines that attempted to detail his
works, and among them, I discovered that the more I learned about him, the more I realized how
little I knew. This single person output more Manga than can be detailed in these pages. The sheer

Tezuka s Other Life:
While his dual life as Doctor (though he never actively pursued a medical career), and commercial
cartoonist is well known, what many fans of Japanese animation do not know was that Dr. Tezuka
led yet another life within the field of animation, that of an independent producer. Independent
animation is a field usually reserved for the terminology art film , but the genre is an area full of
experimentation, and art styles vastly different from those we see daily. Almost every
modernization in the field of commercial animation was the result of experimentation in styles,
camerawork, and usage of the medium in independent animation.
In 1961, Yoji Kuri started a group known as the Animation Party of Three with Ryohei Yanagihara
and Hiroshi Manabe, and later that year, organized the first Japanese inedependent animation
festival. The very next year, Tezuka joined, and produced two films with his own funds, Story of a
Street Corner, and Male. Over the years he continued to experiment with the medium and
discovered that there was much more freedom in producing his own work in whatever style and

Relevance And Authenticity Of Instruction
M Relevance and authenticity in instruction really stood out as memorable to me this week. It is
mentioned that connection to real meaning can make or break learning (Reiser and Dempsey, p.
58). I completely agree that teaching skills in isolation or without any real connection can result in
temporary memorization, but no long term retention or the ability to transfer that knowledgeto new
situations. I appreciate the authors pointing out that to maximize the likelihood of meaningful
learningoccurring, students need to ... work on problems that a) mean something to them
personally and b) are rich and complex enough to invoke real expertise (Reiser and Dempsey, p.
58). If students are shown that the knowledge is relevant and needed in real world situations, they
are more likely to internalize the information for long term use. This is an area that I need to make
sure is addressed in my instruction going forward.
A I agreed with Reiser and Dempsey (p 352) when they discussed that everyone in a group learns
information in different ways. While this statement in the text was referring to assistive
technologies, I believe it is true of any learner. There are many different styles of learning and
preferences for acquiring and demonstrating knowledge. To provide students with the most effective
learning environment, it is best to provide choices in how to interact with information. Some
students may benefit from having access to PowerPoint presentations while

Obstacles In The Count Of Monte Cristo
A person cannot be defined by their physical characteristics, but instead by the way they react and
recover to the obstacles that are placed in front of them. During the French Revolution, many
French authors, such as Alexandre Dumas, wrote numerous novels in order to educate readers
about their historical heritage. This reality is exemplified in Alexandre Dumas novel; the novel is
about a wrongly convicted man who is determined to strike his vengeance on those who
incarcerated him. During the time this book was written, the most popular genre was D Artagnan
romances which were based off of historical events and people. Although what transpires within The
Count of Monte Cristo is fictitious, the hardships the protagonist and other characters face, is
indeed comparable to those of which many have endured for centuries. Alexandre Dumas utilizes
the main character of the story to overcome multiple complications which exemplifies the
importance of responding and persevering through monumental obstacles.
Throughout the novel, the protagonist, Edmond Dantes, is continuously having to make decisions
that most people would find very uncomfortable in dealing with. At the ... Show more content on

in a calm collected manner by the Count, he suggests he is capable of reviving Maximillian s love.
To Maximillian s amazement, the Count does succeed in resurrecting Maximillian s. The Count of

The Awareness Of Stereotypes, And Stereotypes In Society
When people rely on surface appearances and false racial stereotypes, rather than in depth
knowledge of others at level of the heart, mind and spirit, their ability to assess and understand
people accurately is compromised (Forbes). In essence people should not be judged off of some
false preconceived lie like a stereotype, but rather we should focus on the inside character, worth,
and the merit of the person. People often have automatic assumptions about a person s character
rather than logical or rational ideas about a persons abilities or character. In general a stereotype
is a poorly made assumption that lacks insight or reasoning which compromises our ability to
rightfully and truthfully define a person s character or abilities. Stereotypes can be defined as an
oversimplified idea or image held by members of a group towards another group, and they
impact our society in many ways (Stereotype). For example, in an interview with Guy Raz from
NPR, Jamila Lyiscott says, I mean, that s the thing about stereotypes is that it sort of applies this
collective idea to a community or a culture or race or a religion or a group of people. And once
you re in that collective, it s like you re trapped (Lyiscott, Jamila). This evidence shows how in
general, stereotypes are generalized and apply to a collective or community. Groups of people hold
a perception towards other groups that are oversimplified typically towards religions, races,
cultures, e.t.c. This creates the problem of

Examples Of Nanoscience
Nanoscience is the branch of science which studies the phenomena on materials at atomic,
molecular and macromolecular scales, where the properties can differ very much from that of bulk
materials. Nanoparticles are like a bridge between bulk materials and atomic or molecular
structures. Despite of its size, the bulk materials possess constant physical properties. But at nano
scale size dependent properties are generally observed. Hence in general the properties of materials
change as their size approaches the nanoscale which are far different from those of their bulk
counterparts. Nanotechnologycomprises the technological applications of nanoscience, which

alternatives to optimize the resulting solid morphological characteristics.
The rare earth oxides have been synthesized by a wide variety of methods including microwave

Lanthanides
The lanthanide (Ln) elements comprise a unique series of metals in the periodic table. These
metals are distinctive in terms of size, valence orbitals, electrophilicity and magnetic and electronic
properties, such that some members of the series are currently the best metals for certain
applications. These are some of the largest non radioactive metals in the periodic table. For
reactions in which a large trivalent ion is needed, they may be the best.
Rare earth (RE) ions play a vital role in modern industries and optical technologies as the essential
constituents in preparing many essential novel materials. The lanthanides include Lanthanum (La),
Cerium (Ce), Praseodymium (Pr), Neodymium (Nd), Promethium (Pm), Samarium (Sm), Europium
(Eu), Gadolinium (Gd), Terbium (Tb), Dysprosium (Dy), Holmium (Ho), Erbium (Er), Thulium

Pros And Cons Of The 1920s
After WWI, the United States entered an era of conservative values and a supposed return to
normalcy. The 1920s were marked by a desire to return to the way of life before the left leaning
reforms of the Progressive Era and WWI. However, the nation was not unified during the decade.
Many rifts began to form in American society and economy. The 1920s were marked by discord
among many Americans in the areas of immigration, religion, and with the issue of socialism,
marked especially by the Red Scare. When it came to the topic of immigration, nativists largely won
during the 1920s. In response to nativist demands, the government introduced literacy tests in 1917.
This measure to restrict immigration helped pave the way for even more strict regulations in the
1920s. Beginning in 1920, the government began to introduce quotas to further regulate
immigration. While President Wilson was opposed to such regulations, newly elected President
Harding was in favor of them. Under Harding, quotas became increasingly strict over the first half
of the decade, culminating with the Immigration Act of 1924. The Act restricted anyone who was
ineligible for becoming a citizen of the United States from even immigrating into the county. People
of Asian descent, for instance, were previously restricted from becoming US citizens and were
therefore unable to even immigrate into the country under the Act. Because of these restrictions,
immigration rates plummeted. Nativism was rampant in

Characteristics Of 20th Century Literature
Before the 20th Century, literature was pretty straightforward; the narrators were reliable, the
timelines were linear, and the perspective was clear, but then somebody got the idea to mix it up.
This is how we got books such as The Great Gatsby and one of our class texts, Orlando. For some,
this was a startling and uncomfortable transition from what used to be considered the, normal
format which was very up front in terms of structure and voice. Others found it to be more
exciting and, while it was still weird and unsettling for those people, it forced people to think
more about what the books were trying to communicate, instead of just being handed the message;
they had to work for it. This has become one of the leading reasons that societies are encouraged to
read; if you read a book that forces you to think, your mind becomes stronger and this promotes an
increase in intelligence and creativity.
One of the main characteristics of 20th Century Literature is fragmented structure, meaning that the
story was not always in chronological order and that the story was sometimes interrupted by the
characters thoughts or interactions, therefore cutting off the narrative in favor of a new line of
thought. Next there is fragmented perspective, which is much different from fragmented structure
in the way that, instead of scrambling the story, the reliability of the
information is being skewed. Fragmented perspective can also be labelled as being an unreliable
narrator, which at

The Success Of An English Language Learner
Success in EWRT 1A From almost 8000 miles away landing here, I not only packed up my
luggage full of clothes and shoes, but also had my determination to gain a band new and successful
life here in the United States. I choose here for studying and seizing more opportunity for self
accomplishment. Undoubtedly, China, where I come from, owns the very different system of
education and language. Like many of the Chinese students studying abroad, I have gone through
the roughest part of that pattern and have been taken a glance of the outside world. I chose to
escape from where I got used to and started my journey here with my dream of a better and even
successful life. It is obvious that language would be the first major problems I need to face
directly. As an English language learner here in the United States, probably I am not at the same
level as those who are native speakers here. Thus, there will be more problems for me to
overcome it and to success. Mixed up with my confidence and faith to achieving, along with my
experiences and skills gained in learninglanguage from both China and here, I believe I can
achieve the goal of success in EWRT 1A. My family background prepared me to be successful in

Representation Of Hamlet
The theatrical representation of Hamlet is one of mystery, action, character development, but most
importantly, tragedy. A considerable amount of people hold a common belief that the play, Hamlet,
by William Shakespeare is a tragedy, due to the fact that all the main characters perish at the end of
the play. An individual might take this stance on this argument upon first hearing. However, the
reality of the situation is that there are numerous parts of the play that show that this statement is
not only incorrect, but an oversimplified version of the bigger truth. Further investigation into this
topic will reveal that, in fact, the decisions the characters make throughout the duration of the play
is where the true tragedy builds up. At first,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As with Ophelia s tragedy, Laertes suffers a tragedy of being deceived and used by Claudius as a
result of Hamlet s impulsive behavior as well, further assuring that the tragedy exhibits itself in
the conclusions drawn by the characters in the story. The tragedy inside Laertes that is the
causation of Hamlet s killing of Polonius is evident through the scene where Laertes confronts
Claudius on why he did not punish Hamlet for his malicious act. Claudius then goes on to trick
Laertes into plotting against Hamlet, and Laertes proclaims, And so I have a noble father lost;/A
sister driven into desperate terms/Whose worth. if praises may go back again,/Stood challenger on
mount of all the age/For her perfections. But my revenge will come (4.7.27 31.) At this moment in
time, it can be seen that while Laertes expresses his emotions of rage, he is being manipulated by
Claudius, as well as how the dramatic purpose shows character development, as the tragic
outcome of being tricked like this for personal gain stems from that of how Hamlet s actions had
resulted in the loss of his father, which was ultimately one of Hamlet s rash decisions. Upon closer
look, the place where tragedy lies is not only where all the characters die, but where the outcomes
of the decisions the characters make throughout the course of the play, such as when Hamlet
commits homicide towards Polonius, or how Claudius can cause tragedies with the way he lives his

politicians, like Donald Trump, think the solution to resolving our country s debt is by taxing the
top percent more. In reality, the United Statesshould have a flat taxrate due to the fact that it is the
fairest plan and the hard work pertained by the top percent should be valued. The way flat tax
rate works is that everyone gets taxed the same percentage regardless of their income. For example,

It is also used of resources such as building schools, roads, paying government employees but the
fact of the matter is that its all for the public. Why should you make high income citizens pay for
things that everyone is using. We should all put in the same amount of money that goes into
these projects, since after all there for everyones use. Why would you penalize people that
worked hard for their money when everyone else had the opportunity to do so. Even if its old
money, someone struggled to gather that money, the government cannot just take that away.
Being rich is rare privilege, not fairly common, if not it would not feel so unique. With the
method we have now we are just going to balance everyones finances out, we need a diverse
income for our population. If not people will not have any ambition, not strive. A country has to
create riches, not distribute them if they do the economy as we know it will go in a decadence.
Those that are in the highest class have studied and trained so hard to where they are. Most of

West Nile Virus
West Nile Virus is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system of vertebrates, such as
humans and horses. The virus is able to quickly replicate and spread throughout the body. In
humans, those that are at most risk are those who are elderly and those who are
immunocompromised. In horses, those that are at most risk are unvaccinated adults or older
horses. Although a vast majority of infected humans and horses present no signs of disease, if
clinical signs develop, oftentimes they include flu like symptoms, such as a fever, and neurological
symptoms, such as convulsions or seizures, as the disease progressively worsens. Through research
and observation it has been shown that West Nile Virus affects both humans and horses in a

According to Tonya Colpitts and associates, through some research it has shown that the virus has
the ability to infect macrophages, which help facilitate the virus across the blood brain barrier where
it can then begin causing neurological symptoms (Colpitts 5). Yet, according to the article written
by Emilie Donadieu and colleagues, the mechanisms by which West Nile Virus enters the central
nervous system is not fully understood (Donadieu 9). Not enough research has been done to
confirm the hypothesis that it is most likely that the virus affects the central nervous system via
the blood brain barrier, which helps to protect the brain from pathogens and being exposed to
immune mediation or activation (Donadieu 9 10). I it is known however, that once the virus
crosses the blood brain barrier it leads to neuronal death via lesions on the brain (Donadieu 6).
Neurological symptoms seem to develop more frequently in horses than in humans. According to
the article written by Antoine Garwah, 1 in 150 infected people develop severe symptoms of the
virus, which include but are not limited to: high fever, headache, stupor, tremors, seizures or
convulsions, and paralysis (Garwah 2). Meanwhile, according to the Merck Manual article, West
Nile Encephalomyelitis in Horses, approximately 10 39% of infected horses show signs and the

Famous Neck Wound
Hmm. Interesting. We unfortunately have to analyze Dr. Malcolm Perry here because his
statements regarding this famous neck wound are all over the place and an awful awful awful
MESS! Here it is. On 1 11 78, Perry told the HSCA that I thought it [the neck wound] looked like
an entrance wound because it was so small. The next year he told researcher Robert Groden that
the bootlegged autopsy photos were not as he remembered them to be: his trach was neater , and
not the larger, expanded one seen in the pictures. When interviewed in 1979, he still maintained that
the bullet had entered the President s throat from the front... The same year, Perry told Harrison

that I had not speculated. Everyone ignored my qualification. It was a small wound, slightly
ragged at the edges, and could have been an exit or entrance. Furthermore, he told Posner: I did
the procedure. The photos I have seen look like the opening I remember making. In a 5 16 94
response letter to Brad Parker, Perry wrote: Recollection immediately after an event is likely to
be more accurate (although often wrong) than when made 30 years later... And finally, in a 1998

The expected cost synergies (as announced by HP) are approximately $2.5 billion . This amounts
to approximately $0.83 per share in the merged firm. The market value of Compaq at the time

Compaq should be $23.5 billion. So the final exchange ratio price of $25 billion includes a

Starbucks s Marketing Plan For Starbucks
Starbucks doesn t only takes great care in their partners (employees) but also in their stockholders.
Starbucks has paid out dividends to their stockholders every quarter over the last 4 years
(Dividend History, n.d.). Currently the dividend rate is $0.32 per share quarterly (Dividend
History, n.d.). This is pretty impressive considering not all companies chose to pay out dividends
quarterly or yearly and Starbuckshave provided payouts quarterly for the past 4 years straight.
Starbucks has also been able to create other changes in the company outside of the ones they have
made with their partners. When the Keurig coffee maker became popular, Starbucks created the
Verismo. In adding the Verismo to their portfolio it made it possible for them to stay competitive
with the Keurig coffee makers. Now people can make premium Starbucks coffee at home using the
Verismo. Starbucks also created different models of the Verismo to appeal to their different target
markets. They continued their modern, sleek and stylish traits when creating the Verismo, with
different color options and sizes with different price points. With adding the Verismo brewing
machines, they added the Verismo pods which are the equivalent to the Keurig s k cups. They
made the pods and brewing machines available in their retail stores, online through their website
and at other retailers such as Bed Bath and Beyond, William Sonoma, Target and many more. This
has helped to keep Starbucks in the game and on the

James Polk And Manifest Destiny
Around the mid 1800s, the United States was focused on the idea of expansion . This idea was
influenced by Manifest Destiny a term that the U.S. not only could, but was destined to, stretch
from coast to coast and its economic nature, which was the increased development and
advancement of industry in the United States. As the U.S. began to grow more powerful and
internally sound, they were able to add more land and, subsequently, states, into the Union. The
vast majority of this expansion occurred during the presidency of James Polk as a result of the
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ceased the Mexican American war. The conception of this
war was the brainchild of Polk and was what resulted from his presidential ideologies. President
James Polk was responsible for the start of the Mexican American war to a great extent due to his
expansionist ideologies and succeeding actions, aspiration to annex the regions of California and
Texas, and contributions of troops along the Rio GrandeRiver in 1846. To begin with, during the
election of 1844, James Polk was considered to be a long shot and a definite underdog. However,
Polk gained the support of many Americans through his clear desire to defend the territories of the
United States and to further expand them. This ideology became prevalent through his campaign
slogan, 54 40 or fight , referring to the territory that, at the time, was disputed between the United
States and Great Britain, when is modern day Canada and the

What Does The Clock Symbolize In The Great Gatsby
My new cover for the novel, The Great Gatsby touches on the most relevant symbols being, Dr.
T. J. Eckleburg s eyes, clocks, stars, and the green light at the end of the Buchanan s dock. Dr. T.
J. Eckleburg s haunting eyes are depicted as being painted on a fading old billboard overlooking
the Valley of Ashes. This pair of blue eyes staring down on the people below blatantly symbolize
god looking down onto american society. The placement of the billboard in the Valley of Ashes
can be seen as God looking down on the poor workers covered in coal dust. These eyes watching
over the poor s conditions means that as God looks down on the dirty circumstances but does
nothing to free these people of hard labor. Therefore it can be inferred that god watches over the
poor far more intensely than he does the upper class who are free to do as they please outside of

The Significance of Soundscan
Historical Background After the World War II ended, the enormous population of new generation
who were given birth during the war era became majority of the world. In that regard, most
industries smoothly switched the aim to the new customers. For example, music industry, one of
the most sensitive industries, rapidly aligned line of sight to the newly born customers. While the
previous era which was about to cross the border of Post Romanticism era was more focused on art
music or the purpose of encouraging patriotism, the post war era music was more focused on
practical profits. As such, the new generation was targeted. The result of that, pop musicculture was

Billboard which is the most influential music magazine of 21st century was originally a town
magazine which connected bill board owners and advertisers. In Pre war and Post war era, the
magazine, Billboard had been conducting introducing brand new entertainment news. It is said that
the first chart of popular music was posted on January 4th, 1936. The way it measured the chart in
that era is said that the magazine s workers counted all the music play frequency from radio, juke
boxes and selling amount of retail stores. On March 1st, 1991, when the internet was gradually
generalized, and the method for listening to music had moved from CD to the internet down
loading, Billboard constructed the new music play data accumulating system which was named as
Nielson Sound Scan. From this point, Billboard started accumulating the music play data on the
Internet, and reflected that on the chart.
Principal of a market, in music industry Markets, in general, there has always been intense
competition between multiple companies in every industry. To survive from the battle, companies
must always deal with their clients or customers changeable needs. However, sadly, many
companies fail to analyze the time s customer needs, and the result of that, they die out from the
nature of competitive industry. Although it seems brutal, however, it has been the key element
which enables companies to grow up, and the technology to be developed. Music

Another Boring Assembly Was In The Making As I Walked Into
Another boring assembly was in the making as I walked into my junior high school gymnasium.
My best friend at the time, Kelsey, was very excited because the Valencia high school color
guard was going to perform one of their routines in an attempt to get people to join the team. She
was already on the guard, hence her motivation to attend this assembly. Before this point, I did
not know color guard even existed. According to Kelsey, color guard is a performing art in which
a team performs a dance routine centered around the use of flags, rifles, and sabers. Both her
insistence and the awe inspiring performance of the guard moved me to join the team my freshman
year of high school. Even though we did not win at championships, it was overall... Show more

In the end, we did not get into the top tier and did not win any awards that year. The head
instructors even chose to not criticize me for my drastic mistake, for they all knew it was all
over and I was in a dismal state of mind anyway. From that championship on, I had to work
especially hard to reclaim the trust of my instructors. Looking back, I can see now how hard it is
to get someone s trust back once it is lost. I practiced relentlessly throughout high school and was
the best person on the saber line. Or I would have been the best, but I could never be consistent,
which is one of the most important skills to have in color guard. I would throw my saber and
catch a difficult toss ten times in a row perfectly, then the next day drop it three times. Due to the
inconsistency, as well as my history of crumbling under pressure, my instructors would not
allow me another solo toss on my color guard team again. My experience has left a scar in my
mind, to which I owe my persistence to not make promises I cannot keep. The best way to keep
someone s trust is to not break your promises to them. I inadvertently made a promise to my
instructors that they could trust me to catch my toss in our show when all focus is centered on me.
I let them down, therefore I was left to deal with the consequences. Due to my hard work, I
eventually came to prove to my instructors that I could toss beautiful tosses, but

John Berger Ways Of Seeing Analysis
In John Berger s Ways of Seeing he speaks of how the meaning of artwork is dynamic, because
we cannot visit the past and truly know what each artist is thinking and feeling as he paints his
work, so it changes with one s personal experience and the context in which one experiences
them. He also speaks of how critics mystify artwork of the past, attempting to set in stone their
personal meaning of the piece, closing the door of interpretation to anyone who reads their
commentary on the piece. Who is to decide the meaning of advertisements? Or, do they hold no
meaning besides the goal or monetary gain? In Berger s work, he speaks of the meaning behind a
photographer s photo, and how they chose that moment in time to be captured forever.... Show more

Berger believes that the mystification of images narrows the point of view of individuals and
that critics use their status to impose their opinions (Berger 147). In a way, when we view an
advertisement we mystify the image, because as individuals have seen many advertisements, we
impose the meaning that there is no meaning besides that of money. We see nothing behind the
meaning of monetary gain, and we dismiss any other meaning that could be embedded in the
photo because, with our experience we view advertisements as a way to make money and nothing
more. We get this view because at one point in time within the past few decades, someone said
that advertisements we a lie, that everything within them are fake and they are simply used to
trick us into buying things we don t need. All that isn t necessarily false, but that bad reputation
leads people to disguise the beauty in which advertisements truly hold. A large amount of the
images in which society today views are reproductions, via the internet and television. Whether
they are physical reproductions, or a picture or video taken of the original image, Berger believes
that the reproduction of art eradicates the original meaning of many works of art. They have
entered the mainstream of life over which they no longer, in themselves, have power (Berger 159).

The Importance Of Technology In Communication
Technology can play a positive role in communication ,example, live video and audio chats that
increase understanding through nonverbal messages and increase connection at the same time.
While technology like iMessaging can have a negative influence because it lacks nonverbal
communication, can often be distracting us from life, makes people anxious when they have to
wait for people to respond, is highly susceptible to misunderstandings and makes people feel lonely.
On the other hand, FaceTime has been able to provide expressions and voice cues that help bring
meaning to verbal messages which enhances trust and decreases the amount of misunderstandings
that go on in conversations. While, the relationship that is most influenced by technology is my
friends at Uconn because we spend most of the relationship face to face.
A new communication technology I believe is having a positive influence on interpersonal
relationships is FaceTime. FaceTime allows nonverbal communication to happen, which is one of
the most important forms of communication as it plays a role in about sixty five percent of all face
to face conversations. For example, my best friend and I would communicate about our daily
troubles through FaceTime. We thought this would be beneficial to our friendshipbecause through
FaceTime we were able to distinguish other s feelings. If they looked for example ,like they were
feeling sympathetic or empathetic, we would figure that they have sincere intentions. Knowing

Refusal to Return: Finding Bliss at Upton Although Tom Jones by Henry Fielding is appropriately
known as a comic novel written to no set of absolute rules, the work shows many characteristics
similar to epics. In epic novels the main protagonist is normally known for following a set series of
events called the hero s journey. The hero s journey is often a three part adventure consisting of a
departure, an initiation, and a return, through which the protagonist learns much about their
strengths and weaknesses having departed from their world to another. In the new world they face

Being cast out by Mr. Allworthy and having no hope of being with Sophia, Tom decides to leave
his home and set out for Bristol. The speaker if the novel remarks ...we left Mr. Jones...on his

his Fortune o Shore (234). These unfortunate events led to Tom s call to adventure and puts him
on the road that leads him to the inn at the town of Upton as well as to a state of mind that
insulates him from any call to return to his previous world. In the traditional epic the call to
adventure is normally tied to the reason the hero needs to return. During his time in his new
world before he arrives at Upton, Tom befriends Benjamin Partridge, who is actually also a cause
of Tom s going to Upton. According to the epic hero s journey, Benjamin is considered part of the
second step known as tests, friends, and enemies. He is for the most part a good friend to Tom
throughout the series of events in the novel. When Tom sets out at his first stop prior to Upton, he

The Contribution of Patient Case Studies on our...
Although it shares cognitive neuroscience s roots, cognitive neuropsychology has developed into a
discrete discipline. While cognitive neuroscience studies neural organisation of the brain, cognitive
neuropsychology concerns itself with the brain s functional architecture; Coltheart (2010) describes
this as a distinction between brain and mind. According to, among others, Coltheart (2002, cited
Coltheart, 2010) this makes cognitive neuropsychology a branch of cognitive psychologyrather than
neuroscience.
Patient case studies have played a critical role in developing cognitive neuropsychology into a

Initially patients with brain damage were studied with the aim of understanding and treating their
disorder. This was the case for Phineas Gage, who developed behavioural changes after a tamping
iron passed through his brain in 1848 (Harlow, 1868, cited Jansari, 2010). However, progress in the
field of cognitive psychology has enabled the development of complex theoretical models of
cognitive function and improved research techniques. Advances in technology have given
researchers the tools to view damaged brains before death and compare them to normally
functioning, intact brains. As a result, a more challenging aim of cognitive neuropsychology has
emerged: understanding and explaining normal cognitive processes. This is achieved by studying a
deficit in cognitive function in a brain damaged patient and making inferences about intact cognition
. For example, Shallice and Warrington s (1970, cited Hitch, 2010) investigation of patient KF with
acquired brain damage showed that he had an impaired auditory digit span but normal intelligence
and performance in long term learning and memory and understanding spoken language. This
supported a dissociation between short term memory and long term memory initially proposed by
Atkinson and Shiffrin (1971, cited Hitch, 2010). Thus a model of the intact memory system is
developed or supported, which in turn explains memory deficits in patients with brain damage.
Coltheart (2010) lists nine areas of cognitive processing, identified

Buyers primarily the 50 leading airlines around the world used that knowledge to enhance their
bargaining positions, often delaying orders until the last possible moment. Negotiations on

Character Analysis Of Scout Finch In To Kill A Mockingbird...
In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Miss Maudie Atkinson described what a mockingbird
was to Scout, and I think there are many people who can be interpreted as a mockingbird. The
one that stands out to me to be a mockingbird is Scout Finch. Miss Maudie describing to Scout
what a mockingbird is, ...They don t eat up people s gardens, don t nest in corncribs, they don t
do one thing but sing their hearts out us... (Lee 119). Scout is a mockingbird because she does
not harm anybody (to a certain consent), she is nice and loving to everybody that she meets, and
she stands up for people. She does not care if somebody is black, stupid, or fat she would still
want to be their friend. Scout asking if Walter can come over to their house, He

These amounts of tax savings should be added to the incremental cost savings for each year to
come up with the total cash inflows. The present value of all these cash inflows and outflows
can be calculated by discounting them at 12.19%. This rate is calculated by assuming that the
purchasing power parity holds in this scenario. The company can do the feasibility analysis by
looking at both from the subsidiary s and parent s perspective by assuming that the purchasing
power parity holds. Hence, this rate can be regarded as opportunity cost of investment because it
is the second best alternative for the company for investment purposes. So, the NPV can be
calculated by taking the sum of present values of all the cash flows. This NPV comes out to be
3,703,176 Pesos. This NPV value can be converted into Euros by dividing the NPV value by the
spot exchange rate. The spot exchange rate is 15.99 MXN/EURO. Hence, by dividing
3,703,176 by 15.99, NPV value in terms of Euro comes out to be 231,593 Euros. Compute the
NPV in €s by translating future peso cash flows into €s at expected future spot rates. Note
Ariel s € hurdle rate for this asset class was 8%. Annual inflation rates are expected to be 7% in
Mexico and 3% in France. NPV calculated for this scenario comes out to be 231,507 Euros. The
first thing required for calculating NPV in Euro is the forward premium. It is calculated by adding
1 to the inflation rates of France and Mexico

Five decades later and Luke finally manages to master the skill, so he doubts the accuracy of
what he read. _______________________ But he pushes the questions of accuracy out of his
head as he lays beside his partner. The arms around him are strong and protective, the perfect
representation of the man they belong to. Ashton is roughly fifty years his senior, but he looks
like he s still twenty one. He shares the same color hair as Luke, but it is longer and it twists into
natural waves towards the ends. His tanned skin matches Luke s from the hours spent outdoors

Essay On Cherokee Tribe
To begin with, the Cherokee tribe was one of the three primary Native American tribes in South
Carolina that called themselves the real people. Upward in the mountains, they lived in these
villages called longhouses. For the girls, their daily lives consisted of doing work in the field,
planting and hoeing corn, then harvesting it. On the other hand, the boy s daily lives consisted
of being taught to fish and hunt. Their food was examples of fruits, nuts, corn, pole beans,
squash, pumpkins, bottle gourds, and tobacco. Next, the Catawba tribe was another one of the
three primary Native American tribes in South Carolina that called themselves the river people.
They used Carolina clay to make their pottery which they were known for. The Catawba
dwellers lived in villages that had an open rounding on the top. The Catawbas were primarily
farmers because every day they planted crops by the river, fished and hunted. Therefore, the
Yemassee tribe was the third primary tribe in South Carolina that was from Spanish Florida.
Throughout the summer, they lived on a beach, staying in Wigwams concealed in palmetto
leaves. However, during the fall, winter, and spring they stayed in wattle and daub homes with a
roof of leaves like the Cherokee. Every day they would eat clams which were part of their diet and
equip the land for crops. Women were obligated for child rearing, making clothes, and served food
and the men congregated the rest of the food in fishing and hunting.... Show more content on

tribes, the Yemassee tribe also had a council but sometimes involved

Industrialization in India
Need for Trend of Industrialization in India
What is Industry?
In its broadest sense, industry is any work that is undertaken for economic gain and that promotes
employment. The word may be applied to a wide range of activities, from farming to manufacturing
and tourism. It encompasses production at any scale, from the local sometimes known as cottage
industry to the multinational or transnational.
In a more restricted sense, industry refers to the production of goods, especially when that
production is accomplished with machines. It is this limited definition of industry that is embodied
by the notion of industrialization: the transition to an economy based on the large scale, machine
assisted production of goods by a concentrated, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ironically, de industrialization in the three countries mentioned above has been accompanied by a
growth in the high tech industries in areas such as the CГґte d Azur in France; Silicon Valley in
California; and along the M4 motorway, around Cambridge, and in central Scotland the so called
Silicon Glen in the UK. The long term impact of de industrialization has yet to be felt. It may be the
speed of the process, rather than the process itself, that needs careful management.
Transnational Corporations
Probably the most significant industrial development since the 1960s has been the rise of the
multinational or transnational company. Examples of these companies, which operate in many
countries, are Ford, General Motors, IBM, Siemens, and Matsushita Electrical. United Nations
(UN) estimates that investment by transnational companies has risen by 13 per cent per year over
the last 20 years, largely because more and more governments are accepting these firms into their
countries.
Nevertheless, the growth of multinational corporations has raised a number of concerns. An
enormous amount of production power is concentrated in the hands of a few controllers, which
means that the countries involved become directly susceptible to economic changes in other parts
of the world. The transfer of assets from one country to another may be difficult for governments to
manage or prevent, and there are likely to be disparities in the treatment of different countries.

The men of the 54th regiment were part of the first black regiment to serve in the U.S. military and were all volunteers. Lead by twenty three year old Robert Gould Shaw these men were held a high amount of pride, enthusiasm, and bravery as they willingly fought against all of the racial harshness of the U.S. military system. The men of the 54th regiment put up with stereotypes and unacceptable training conditions while being consistently being challenged to actually stay in the military and not desert. But Searles repeatably fought the encouragement to go home and stayed to fight along side his fellow troops (even after being wounded and given permission to be sent home). In fact Searles seemed to be encouraged by everyone at one point or another to give up on his service to the 54th regiment. I also found him very interesting in refusing to change his ways to fit in. Tripp nicknamed Searles snowflake due to his upbringing and personality. But even with the nickname snowflake Searles did not change his personality to fit in with the other men. • 4. Symbolism In Caged Bird Word Choice, Point of View, Metaphor, Symbol and Tone in Maya Angelou s Caged Bird By solely reading the tittle of the poem, the reader might generally associate it with symbolism, a condition where limitation exists instead of freedom. After reading the whole stanza and a little background of the poet, however, the reader might connect this with the past ethnicity incident between black and white people of America which in this poem is represented as extended metaphor in comparison and contrast between caged bird (black people) and free bird (white people). The line but a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams / his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream , in which the grave can be the symbol of death, might represent the circumstance where dreams cannot be fulfilled and become nightmares instead. • 8. Relevance And Authenticity Of Instruction M Relevance and authenticity in instruction really stood out as memorable to me this week. It is mentioned that connection to real meaning can make or break learning (Reiser and Dempsey, p. 58). I completely agree that teaching skills in isolation or without any real connection can result in temporary memorization, but no long term retention or the ability to transfer that knowledgeto new situations. I appreciate the authors pointing out that to maximize the likelihood of meaningful learningoccurring, students need to ... work on problems that a) mean something to them personally and b) are rich and complex enough to invoke real expertise (Reiser and Dempsey, p. 58). If students are shown that the knowledge is relevant and needed in real world situations, they are more likely to internalize the information for long term use. This is an area that I need to make sure is addressed in my instruction going forward. A I agreed with Reiser and Dempsey (p 352) when they discussed that everyone in a group learns information in different ways. While this statement in the text was referring to assistive technologies, I believe it is true of any learner. There are many different styles of learning and preferences for acquiring and demonstrating knowledge. To provide students with the most effective learning environment, it is best to provide choices in how to interact with information. Obstacles In The Count Of Monte Cristo A person cannot be defined by their physical characteristics, but instead by the way they react and recover to the obstacles that are placed in front of them. During the French Revolution, many French authors, such as Alexandre Dumas, wrote numerous novels in order to educate readers about their historical heritage. This reality is exemplified in Alexandre Dumas novel; the novel is about a wrongly convicted man who is determined to strike his vengeance on those who incarcerated him. During the time this book was written, the most popular genre was D Artagnan romances which were based off of historical events and people. Although what transpires within The Count of Monte Cristo is fictitious, the hardships the protagonist and other characters face, is indeed comparable to those of which many have endured for centuries. The Awareness Of Stereotypes, And Stereotypes In Society When people rely on surface appearances and false racial stereotypes, rather than in depth knowledge of others at level of the heart, mind and spirit, their ability to assess and understand people accurately is compromised (Forbes). In essence people should not be judged off of some false preconceived lie like a stereotype, but rather we should focus on the inside character, worth, and the merit of the person. People often have automatic assumptions about a person s character rather than logical or rational ideas about a persons abilities or character. In general a stereotype is a poorly made assumption that lacks insight or reasoning which compromises our ability to rightfully and truthfully define a person s character or abilities. Stereotypes can be defined as an oversimplified idea or image held by members of a group towards another group, and they impact our society in many ways (Stereotype). For example, in an interview with Guy Raz from NPR, Jamila Lyiscott says, I mean, that s the thing about stereotypes is that it sort of applies this collective idea to a community or a culture or race or a religion or a group of people. And once you re in that collective, it s like you re trapped (Lyiscott, Jamila). This evidence shows how in general, stereotypes are generalized and apply to a collective or community. The 1920s were marked by a desire to return to the way of life before the left leaning reforms of the Progressive Era and WWI. However, the nation was not unified during the decade. Many rifts began to form in American society and economy. The 1920s were marked by discord among many Americans in the areas of immigration, religion, and with the issue of socialism, marked especially by the Red Scare. When it came to the topic of immigration, nativists largely won during the 1920s. In response to nativist demands, the government introduced literacy tests in 1917. This measure to restrict immigration helped pave the way for even more strict regulations in the 1920s. Beginning in 1920, the government began to introduce quotas to further regulate immigration. While President Wilson was opposed to such regulations, newly elected President Harding was in favor of them. Under Harding, quotas became increasingly strict over the first half of the decade, culminating with the Immigration Act of 1924. The Act restricted anyone who was ineligible for becoming a citizen of the United States from even immigrating into the county. People of Asian descent, for instance, were previously restricted from becoming US citizens and were therefore unable to even immigrate into the country under the Act. • 16. Characteristics Of 20th Century Literature Before the 20th Century, literature was pretty straightforward; the narrators were reliable, the timelines were linear, and the perspective was clear, but then somebody got the idea to mix it up. This is how we got books such as The Great Gatsby and one of our class texts, Orlando. For some, this was a startling and uncomfortable transition from what used to be considered the, normal format which was very up front in terms of structure and voice. Others found it to be more exciting and, while it was still weird and unsettling for those people, it forced people to think more about what the books were trying to communicate, instead of just being handed the message; they had to work for it. This has become one of the leading reasons that societies are encouraged to read; if you read a book that forces you to think, your mind becomes stronger and this promotes an increase in intelligence and creativity. One of the main characteristics of 20th Century Literature is fragmented structure, meaning that the story was not always in chronological order and that the story was sometimes interrupted by the characters thoughts or interactions, therefore cutting off the narrative in favor of a new line of thought. Next there is fragmented perspective, which is much different from fragmented structure in the way that, instead of scrambling the story, the reliability of the information is being skewed. Fragmented perspective can also be labelled as being an unreliable narrator, which at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Starbucks has paid out dividends to their stockholders every quarter over the last 4 years (Dividend History, n.d.). Currently the dividend rate is $0.32 per share quarterly (Dividend History, n.d.). This is pretty impressive considering not all companies chose to pay out dividends quarterly or yearly and Starbuckshave provided payouts quarterly for the past 4 years straight. Starbucks has also been able to create other changes in the company outside of the ones they have made with their partners. When the Keurig coffee maker became popular, Starbucks created the Verismo. In adding the Verismo to their portfolio it made it possible for them to stay competitive with the Keurig coffee makers. Now people can make premium Starbucks coffee at home using the Verismo. Starbucks also created different models of the Verismo to appeal to their different target markets. They continued their modern, sleek and stylish traits when creating the Verismo, with different color options and sizes with different price points. With adding the Verismo brewing machines, they added the Verismo pods which are the equivalent to the Keurig s k cups. This idea was influenced by Manifest Destiny a term that the U.S. not only could, but was destined to, stretch from coast to coast and its economic nature, which was the increased development and advancement of industry in the United States. As the U.S. began to grow more powerful and internally sound, they were able to add more land and, subsequently, states, into the Union. The vast majority of this expansion occurred during the presidency of James Polk as a result of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ceased the Mexican American war. The conception of this war was the brainchild of Polk and was what resulted from his presidential ideologies. President James Polk was responsible for the start of the Mexican American war to a great extent due to his expansionist ideologies and succeeding actions, aspiration to annex the regions of California and Texas, and contributions of troops along the Rio GrandeRiver in 1846. To begin with, during the election of 1844, James Polk was considered to be a long shot and a definite underdog. However, Polk gained the support of many Americans through his clear desire to defend the territories of the United States and to further expand them. This ideology became prevalent through his campaign slogan, 54 40 or fight , referring to the territory that, at the time, was disputed between the United States and Great Britain, when is modern day Canada and the ... Eckleburg s haunting eyes are depicted as being painted on a fading old billboard overlooking the Valley of Ashes. This pair of blue eyes staring down on the people below blatantly symbolize god looking down onto american society. The placement of the billboard in the Valley of Ashes can be seen as God looking down on the poor workers covered in coal dust. These eyes watching over the poor s conditions means that as God looks down on the dirty circumstances but does nothing to free these people of hard labor. She was already on the guard, hence her motivation to attend this assembly. Before this point, I did not know color guard even existed. According to Kelsey, color guard is a performing art in which a team performs a dance routine centered around the use of flags, rifles, and sabers. I practiced relentlessly throughout high school and was the best person on the saber line. I inadvertently made a promise to my instructors that they could trust me to catch my toss in our show when all focus is centered on me. He also speaks of how critics mystify artwork of the past, attempting to set in stone their personal meaning of the piece, closing the door of interpretation to anyone who reads their commentary on the piece. Berger believes that the mystification of images narrows the point of view of individuals and that critics use their status to impose their opinions (Berger 147). In a way, when we view an advertisement we mystify the image, because as individuals have seen many advertisements, we impose the meaning that there is no meaning besides that of money. We see nothing behind the meaning of monetary gain, and we dismiss any other meaning that could be embedded in the photo because, with our experience we view advertisements as a way to make money and nothing more. We get this view because at one point in time within the past few decades, someone said that advertisements we a lie, that everything within them are fake and they are simply used to trick us into buying things we don t need. All that isn t necessarily false, but that bad reputation leads people to disguise the beauty in which advertisements truly hold. A large amount of the images in which society today views are reproductions, via the internet and television. According to, among others, Coltheart (2002, cited Coltheart, 2010) this makes cognitive neuropsychology a branch of cognitive psychologyrather than neuroscience. This was the case for Phineas Gage, who developed behavioural changes after a tamping iron passed through his brain in 1848 (Harlow, 1868, cited Jansari, 2010). However, progress in the field of cognitive psychology has enabled the development of complex theoretical models of cognitive function and improved research techniques. Advances in technology have given researchers the tools to view damaged brains before death and compare them to normally functioning, intact brains. As a result, a more challenging aim of cognitive neuropsychology has emerged: understanding and explaining normal cognitive processes. This is achieved by studying a deficit in cognitive function in a brain damaged patient and making inferences about intact cognition . For example, Shallice and Warrington s (1970, cited Hitch, 2010) investigation of patient KF with acquired brain damage showed that he had an impaired auditory digit span but normal intelligence and performance in long term learning and memory and understanding spoken language. This supported a dissociation between short term memory and long term memory initially proposed by Atkinson and Shiffrin (1971, cited Hitch, 2010). Thus a model of the intact memory system is developed or supported, which in turn explains memory deficits in patients with brain damage. Upward in the mountains, they lived in these villages called longhouses. For the girls, their daily lives consisted of doing work in the field, planting and hoeing corn, then harvesting it. On the other hand, the boy s daily lives consisted of being taught to fish and hunt. Their food was examples of fruits, nuts, corn, pole beans, squash, pumpkins, bottle gourds, and tobacco. Next, the Catawba tribe was another one of the three primary Native American tribes in South Carolina that called themselves the river people. They used Carolina clay to make their pottery which they were known for. The Catawba dwellers lived in villages that had an open rounding on the top. The Catawbas were primarily farmers because every day they planted crops by the river, fished and hunted. • 47. Industrialization in India Need for Trend of Industrialization in India What is Industry? In its broadest sense, industry is any work that is undertaken for economic gain and that promotes employment. The word may be applied to a wide range of activities, from farming to manufacturing and tourism. It encompasses production at any scale, from the local sometimes known as cottage industry to the multinational or transnational. In a more restricted sense, industry refers to the production of goods, especially when that production is accomplished with machines. It is this limited definition of industry that is embodied by the notion of industrialization: the transition to an economy based on the large scale, machine assisted production of goods by a concentrated, ... Ironically, de industrialization in the three countries mentioned above has been accompanied by a growth in the high tech industries in areas such as the CГґte d Azur in France; Silicon Valley in California; and along the M4 motorway, around Cambridge, and in central Scotland the so called Silicon Glen in the UK. The long term impact of de industrialization has yet to be felt. It may be the speed of the process, rather than the process itself, that needs careful management. Transnational Corporations Probably the most significant industrial development since the 1960s has been the rise of the multinational or transnational company. Examples of these companies, which operate in many countries, are Ford, General Motors, IBM, Siemens, and Matsushita Electrical. United Nations (UN) estimates that investment by transnational companies has risen by 13 per cent per year over the last 20 years, largely because more and more governments are accepting these firms into their countries. Nevertheless, the growth of multinational corporations has raised a number of concerns. An enormous amount of production power is concentrated in the hands of a few controllers, which means that the countries involved become directly susceptible to economic changes in other parts of the world. The transfer of assets from one country to another may be difficult for governments to manage or prevent, and there are likely to be disparities in the treatment of different countries.
