2. INTRODUCTION
• Aerosol therapy or mist therapy is given via nebulization.
• Nebulized therapy provides a portal of entry for systemic drug
treatment as well as for the direct treatment of respiratory diseases.
• The jet nebulizer utilizes a high velocity to generate particles from the
prescribed solution.
• Either oxygen or compressed air powders the nebulizer.

• Nebulizer jar and cap

• 2 mL, 5 mL syringes +
NS/sterile water
• Sputum mug
• Nasal swab sticks
• Stethoscope

5. STEPS
• Place the child in a comfortable, upright position. Infant can
be held on the mother's lap.
• Explain the procedure to the child and family.
• Wash hand and prepare the nebulizer solutions as advised.
• Clean the mask with first spirit swab and then normal saline
swabs and dry them.
• Put the prepared solution to the medicine cup/nebulization
jar and cover the cap .
6. • Clean the nostrils with swab stick if dirty.
• Auscultate the chest for bilateral air entry.
• Attach the mask with nebulizer machine or oxygen source. Adjust
the oxygen flow to 6-8 L/min or until the fine mists appear.
• Turn on the nebulizer machine if used.
• Confirm that a steady mist is flowing from mask.
• Put the mask tightly covering mouth and nose.

7. • Stop the nebulization when the solution has
disappeared from the chamber.
• Wipe the mouth with dry cotton swab.
• Give chest physiotherapy and ask to cough
out the secretion in older children.
• Observe the patient and record the
procedure.
