Positive Deviance, Presentation at DwD by Erika BaileyThe Moment
Positive Deviance is based on the observation that in every community there are certain individuals or groups whose uncommon behaviors and strategies enable them to find better solutions to problems than their peers, while having access to the same resources and facing similar or worse challenges.
The Positive Deviance approach is an asset-based, problem-solving, and community-driven approach that enables the community to discover these successful behaviors and strategies and develop a plan of action to promote their adoption by all concerned.

NeuroDevNet NCE in collaboration with York University's KMb Unit reviewed and assessed existing guides for researchers to use social media for dissemination of research finding and engaging with their stakeholders (end users). The guides are ranked from beginner to advanced, and are presented in an annotated bibliography format which also indicates platforms/tools reviewed in each guide.
This document represents a compilation of existing guides on stakeholder engagement. The individual guides have been divided into three sections: introduction to stakeholder engagement, how to do stakeholder engagement, and evaluating the outcome of stakeholder engagement on your research. The guides that have been organized into these sections have each been created for different audiences and/or organizations.
However, the concepts, processes and strategies contained within them are transferrable to other contexts including NeuroDevNet and the research projects led by its researchers and trainees.
Several of the guides that are referenced, contain tables with names and definitions of different methodologies for doing stakeholder engagement. This information has been analyzed and arranged into the following three tables based on the main goal of the stakeholder engagement activity:
Table 1 represents dissemination-focused stakeholder engagement. That is, the activity is mostly about sharing
information with stakeholders but there is an opportunity for them to comment.
Table 2 represents methodologies that aim to facilitate discussion, analysis, and/or prioritization and recommendations
among stakeholders. The methodologies vary from informal non-structured to more formal structured discussion, recording of feedback and analysis.
Finally, Table 3 represents the opposite of Table 1, in that the methodologies are mainly for listening to
stakeholders after providing minimal information such as guiding questions or information about a problem to be solved. Methods that are very similar have been combined into one heading. The definitions for each methodology can be found in the guides they originate from.
This guide was created for NeuroDevNet researchers and trainees (however it could also be useful to practitioners and KT professionals) with an interest in exploring infographics as a KT product. It begins with an evidence-informed introduction followed by an annotated bibliography of web-based resources and ends with appendices of evidence-informed worksheets (see Appendices A-E) created by the KT Core for you to use during the design and creation of your infographic. This guide is intended to provide you with information including: what is an infographic, what are the different types of infographics, what should you consider when planning your infographic, how you can either do it yourself or work with a graphic designer, and a form-fillable tool you can use to help you think through and collate the information you need before sketching a draft of your infographic.

The Application of Business Analysis Principles to the Field of Knowledge Tra...KBHN KT
Abstract:
KBHN is a Federally funded Network Centre of Excellence (NCE) focused on early diagnosis and treatment for children and families affected by neurodisabilities such as Autism Spectrum Disorders, Cerebral Palsy and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. Knowledge Translation is important for helping to move research based interventions and discoveries into practice and policy, for improving the lives of Canadians. KBHN's KT Core provides a suite of services to assist its researchers and trainees to maximize the impact of their innovations. However, what often remains 'unseen' are the systems and processes that have been developed and deployed to facilitate the smooth provision of these services to the Network and subsequent reporting. Principles from the field of business analysis have proven indispensable to the KT Core, such as: a) identifying stakeholders who are directly or indirectly affected/involved, b) requirements gathering from all stakeholders, c) design/improvement of processes and products based on this understanding of relevant stakeholders and their needs, as well as obtaining their feedback on proposed solutions. This presentation will describe how KBHN's KT Core has successfully applied general principles of business analysis (solutions such as process and product design/improvement) using three examples: 1) an improved process for drafting clear language summaries, 2) a new process created and operationalized for developing detailed KT plans (along with development of a custom KT planning product) with four selected research project teams within the Network, and 3) an innovative application of survey software for (cost and time) efficient annual progress reporting. In sum, this presentation will advocate for broader application of business analysis principles for process and product development within the field of knowledge translation.
Abstract:
KBHN is a Federally-funded Network of Centres of Excellence (NCE), dedicated to discovery through research and the translation of these activities and outputs into real impact(s) for Canadians. KBHN is in its second 5-year cycle, and in order to demonstrate impact(s) of its work, KBHN’s KT Core acted upon direction from its Research Management Committee to focus efforts towards creating detailed KT Plans for 4 designated “High Impact Projects (HIPs)”. Part of the process required the creation of a customized KT Planning tool, called the “Hybrid KT Planning/Project Management tool”. The initial (prototype) version of this tool was piloted with the 4 HIPs. Feedback was sought immediately after its application, and field notes were taken to record this user input as well as our own observations about its use in practice. This information was later transformed into properly-worded requirements that we could apply to the design and development of the next iteration. The presentation as part of this workshop will explain the process for creating the tool and progress to-date, including a list of revisions in the form of requirements that are needed to inform the design of the next iteration. The tool, while designed for use by KBHN’s remaining 15 research projects that were not chosen for the HIP pilot, can also be useful for researchers in other NCEs, or anywhere. This workshop will create space for participants to work through parts of the tool and provide feedback to the presenters to inform future developments in order to maximize its usefulness for all researchers and KT professionals.

Russian anarchist and anti-war movement in the third year of full-scale warAntti Rautiainen
Anarchist group ANA Regensburg hosted my online-presentation on 16th of May 2024, in which I discussed tactics of anti-war activism in Russia, and reasons why the anti-war movement has not been able to make an impact to change the course of events yet. Cases of anarchists repressed for anti-war activities are presented, as well as strategies of support for political prisoners, and modest successes in supporting their struggles.

2. Overview
• Caveats
• Starting at the top: the Board
• Making a network sing: Management
• Make it count: Measuring Impact
• Key messages
What have we learned?
3. Starting at the top: the Board
1. Minimize the number of advisory committees
2. Involve end-users in a meaningful way
3. Embrace unconventional strategic planning
4. Define simple, but meaningful performance metrics
5. Develop strong partnerships: quality, not quantity
4. Making a network sing: Management
1. Take a step back: identify
the gaps and your unique
role
2. Go beyond the generic: find
a big idea that unites
3. Act as a catalyst
4. Resource knowledge
translation activities
appropriately
5. Truly integrate knowledge
translation and research: it’s
hard!
What have we learned?
5. Prevention Treatment Rehabilitation
Regional/Provincial Implementation of Best Practice
Reengagement
Best Practices and Standards of Care
Professional Development
Information/Evaluation
National Platforms to Provide Support
Public Awareness
Coordinated Research
What have we learned?Canadian Stroke Strategy Example
• Best Practices and Related Tools
• Annual Stroke Report
• Stroke Distinction Program
• Canadian Stroke Congress
• Provincial strategies in 6 provinces
6. Make it count: measuring what you do
1. NCE measures are for them,
not you
2. Keep process measures to a
minimum and make it easy on
your investigators
3. Ask yourself: what will success
look like for your network?
4. Hire someone to quantify the
socio-economic impact
5. Communicate like crazy
Measure what is
measurable, and
make measurable
what is not so.
- Galileo Galilei
7. Three Key Messages
1. The Board plays an important role in maintaining a
focus on impact. Does your Board engage the right
people and consistently review performance? Is
everyone clear on what you’re trying to achieve?
2. Bold, impactful, ideas unite individuals and
organizations. Does your network have a big idea -
something that couldn’t otherwise be achieved through
existing operating/personnel grants?
3. Measure what you do, no matter how difficult it
is. You will be asked to report to multiple stakeholders
and even the public. How will you measure your impact
beyond the traditional measures?
