Why is LPWA needed? Current GSM and LTE solutions are
not fitting for most IoT use cases.
Several characteristics of current GSM and LTE solutions make them unfitting for IoT
appliances:

describes a class of network protocols
designed to establish connections
between low energy devices (e.g. a
battery driven sensor) and a network
server. They are designed to achieve
