Herman Miller Case Study Essay
Case Six: Southwest Airlines
Introduction
Herman Miller has a deep rooted history as a quality manufacturer of office furniture. The
company has been recognized on Fortune s Most Admired Companies, and 100 Best Companies
to Word For lists, as well as Fast Company s Most Innovative Companies list (Shipper, Manz,
Adams, Manz, 2011). Due to the company s innate ability to reinvent itself, Herman Miller has
been able to stay relevant through the years despite the great depression and several recessions over
the years (Shipper et al., 2011). With the right planning Herman Miller will continue its tradition of
innovation well into the future.

Some are part of the museum s permanent collection (Shipper et al., 2011). Even before other
companies recognized the importance of being green, sustainability and environmental
stewardship were part of the Herman Miller culture (Shipper et al., 2011). Herman Miller became
a founding partner of the U.S. Green Building Council and the Tropical Forest Foundation
(Shipper et al., 2011). The company discontinued the use of endangered wood and chose to use
wood from sustainable sources instead (Shipper et al., 2011). Some of Herman Miller s products
were recognized for use in buildings attaining a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design) certification (Shipper et al., 2011). Environmental stewardship is just a small part of the
values that are important to the Herman Miller culture. (See Exhibit 1.) Each member of the
Herman Miller organization recognizes these core values and are held to these standards from
plant worker to board member (Shipper et al., 2011). Herman Miller saw tough times in the
early 21st century. Sales fell flat as the dot com bubble burst (Shipper et al., 2011). Shortly
thereafter, the events of September 11th, 2001 caused sales to continue to decrease (Shipper et
al., 2011). The difficult decision to abandon the company s long standing no layoff policy was
made to keep the company alive. The workforce was cut by 38% and a plant was closed in Georgia

National Literacy Crusade Of 1980 Essay
The Sandinistas National Literacy Crusade of 1980 (CNA) significantly reduced the rate of
illiteracy in Nicaragua from an estimated forty three percent to twelve percent. Improvements to the
literacy rate were short lived. The instability of Nicaragua under the Sandinistas (1979 1990)
effectively froze state sponsored education programs, minimizing the potential of educational
efforts after the 1980 campaign. The weakened Sandinista government, as well as inadequate
preparation of post CNA teachers, allowed the newly literate to lose their literacy. Although the
campaign failed to permanently reduce illiteracy, it did serve as a catalyst for a new brand of
Nicaraguan nationalism amongst young Nicaraguans who served as volunteer teachers. The
campaign allowed women to transcend the traditional social and hierarchical boundaries of
Nicaraguan society. Women assumed positions of authority as teachers, challenging the historically
patriarchal norms of Nicaraguan culture. Introduction
In July of 1979, after years of fighting the repressive Somoza regime, the Frente Sandinista de
LiberacГon Nacional (FSLN) and their allies seized Managua and with it the seat of Nicaragua s
government. The deposition of the Anastasio Somoza Debayle marked the end of a four decades
long dynasty defined by cruelty and cronyism. Under the thumb of the Somocista government, the
majority of Nicaraguans were denied or lacked access to education, health services, running

I Heard A Fly Buzz When I Died

I Heard a Fly Buzz When I Died by Emily Dickinson
Emily Dickinson was likely influenced by epitaphs on tombstones. She uses floral language like
Frances Osgood, and did not write the way the general public thought women should write, like
the way of Helen Hunt Jackson. It is possible that is the reason she did not publish her works
(Petrino). In the poem I heard a fly buzz when I died , Emily Dickinson uses metaphors in order to
say that everyone dies and it is not always the most desirable way to die. Emily Dickinson was part
of the American Transcendentalist movement. The word transcendental means character, thought,
or action, so it is no surprise the movement was called Transcendentalism. The transcendentalists
often worked together, unlike poets from other movements (webexhibits.org). The
transcendentalists, particularly the women, often wrote about death and many people wonder
why (Noble). The poem I Heard a Fly Buzz When I Died is about a person lying on their death
bed after having a will written. The persona, the person telling the story as a narrator, has been
distracted by a fly.
Emily Dickinson used metaphors, foreshadowing, and personification in I Heard a fly Buzz When I
Died. A metaphor is a comparison of two unlike things. An extended metaphor is a metaphor that
extends through stanzas or even through the entire poem. The poem is an extended metaphor,
comparing the random, ugly fly and an

The Lighthouse By Virginia Woolf
The purpose of a lighthouse is to serve as a navigational aid to shores or ports and to warn boats
of dangerous areas. To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf is a novel that teaches how one person
can affect the lives of people around them by, in a sense, shining a light on the person s specific
traits. In the novel, Mrs. Ramsay is one of the main characters that unfortunately does not make it to
the end of the story, but her presence is shadowed throughout the novel where she is not there
physically. Virginia Woolf
used the lighthouse as analogy for Mrs. Ramsay s existence in the first
part of the book and after her death during the third section of the book. Mrs. Ramsay s death
allows the reader to realize that she is the lighthouse that highlights and unifies her family and all
the guests during the time spent together at the Ramsay s summer home. Though Mrs. Ramsay
was the conjoining light that brought people together, Woolf decides to kill Mrs. Ramsay in part
two of the novel. During the moments of Mrs. Ramsay lighting, Woolf incorporates dark thoughts
that expresses a different side to the novel. Bitter and black, half way down, in the darkness, in
the shaft which ran from the sunlight to the depths, perhaps a tear formed; a tear fell... (p.32).
Woolf is reflecting on her perception of death and how she dealt with the thoughts of killing
herself. As for Woolf s own death, she left her house leaving behind a note to Vanessa Bell, her
sister, and a note to Leonard Woolf,

Latin American Imperialism Research Paper
The countries within the continents of Asia and Africa and Latin American countries were all
trying to overcome the struggles of European imperialism. Europeans had migrated to these areas to
establish an economic system that would benefit European countries. Their attempts toward
autonomy was a battle all in itself, but increased the level of nationalism among the people of these
countries. After World War I, India
established organizations known as the Indian National
Congress and the Muslim League to lead their efforts toward independence. Wilson s Fourteen
Points and the Russian Revolution played a major role. Mahandes Gandhi, an Indian nationalist,
led the movement toward independence for India. He was raised as a Hindu and studied law in
England. He was opposed to the idea of the caste or class system especially the exclusion of the
Untouchables. During his leadership, the British allowed the Indians to self rule , but this lifestyle

The Book of 1 Samuel Essay
The Book of 1 Samuel
The book of 1 Samuel, a part of the Old Testament, sparks the dawn of the United Kingdom of
Israel by telling of its first king, Saul. Samuel is one of the first talked about pre literary prophets
in the bible perhaps because he anointed the first king of the United Kingdom. He is a prophet by
definition because he possessed the ability to converse with the almighty Yahweh. Samuel and Saul
are key players to the rise of the kingdom but Saul runs into trouble and disobeys God, which
leads him to his own inevitable demise. In 1 Samuel 28: 1 25 Yahweh guides Saul to his death
because he has outright deceived and disobeyed God. This passage sets an example to obey
Yahweh; otherwise he will inflict punishment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Saul had previously wiped out all of the mediums and wizards from the land because they were
evil in the eyes of Yahweh. Because of his realized hypocrisy, he disguised himself and visited
the medium his servants had sought out in Endor. He told the medium to call upon Samuel and
so she immediately suspected that he is Saul. She knew that her work was extremely illegal by
Saul s court, so she became afraid until he reassured her that he was permitting the act in that
occasion. She then called upon Samuel. Samuel apparently took over the medium s body or
appears in some other way to Saul. So Saul did what he came there for and asked for advise on his
latest predicament. The irritated and disturbed Samuel explained that Yahweh is taking away his
kingdom and giving it to David because of his disobedience of not carrying out the Lord s
punishment against the Amalekites (according to Mc Carter the dead had some way of knowing
God s plans and had access to them). So, Saul fell to the ground in anguish from the news and lack
of energy caused by fasting. The medium quickly attended to him and forced him to eat. Saul and
his servants then left. And there the chapter ends. Yahweh took the kingdom from Saul because

Aristotle and Hobbes Ideas about the Origin and Purpose of Political Life
From the very ancient times political life was formed by groups of people who were having
different thoughts and ideas about how to rule or how to control others and their properties. As
long as that happened, the differences had led to misunderstanding and chaos among the tribes and
as now called politics. Each political community formed, a different problem came to life. All this
was a way to undercover the best ways of ruling and leading others in places all around the world.
The first place that appeared to be like a political community was households. Then it turned to
bigger and stronger establishments that human being had never thought of before. One of the
structures which was formed and led to different notions was government, and it is the structure by

or theory of influencing and governing on other people on a global or individual level.
Government is the main body or institution that runs the country and politics is a system or
practice that helps in running country. Of course political life was very simple at that time
because of having fewer people in a place or community comparing to today s world. Also, the
fact that every bit of human mind is into having power or leading others it made it more difficult
to get along in one place without having a better or stronger person leading them or controlling
them and telling them what to do. As a result of having those differences, political life was formed
successfully by some leaders whom they call themselves governors. According to two famous
writers Aristotle and Hobbes who had different

Case Study Of Vanilla Rum Apple Butter

The product that I have chosen for this project is a food product, Vanilla Rum Apple Butter.
Apple butter is made pretty much like apple sauce except you add spices or flavorings to it and
slow cook it for multiple hours. Slow cooking apple butter for multiple hours will result in it
becoming thick and spreadable. The Vanilla Rum Apple Butter would mainly be sold online and
at local farmers market. My target market could potentially be a wide range of food consumers.
The one target consumer would be anyone who likes apple butter and who is wanting to change it
up a little bit from your average apple butter. Then you have your apple lovers, your rum drinkers
and anyone who likes the flavor vanilla. You also have your morning toast eaters due to most
people who consume this product would eat it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Physics Of Physics And Engineering Mechanics
By the time I reached senior high school, I knew I wanted to study mechanical engineering, but I
hadn t decided on a focus. Then, near the end of my junior year, I attended a family function at
my aunt and uncles house. A number of my siblings and cousins had piled onto their trampoline,
and eventually a bracket in the underside of the trampoline failed. Fortunately, no one was hurt,
but my uncle, who worked for Elliot Group, mentioned that a simple finite element model should
have been able to identify the design deficiency. At the time, I didn t even know what finite
element analysis was, so I did some research when I got home. What I found was a field that
exactly suited my interests in applied mathematics and engineering mechanics. Since then, I have
taken every opportunity possible to expand my knowledge of computational mechanics, and I
hope to further that effort at the University of Illinois. My academic experience began freshman
year of college, when I took a course on computational methods in engineering. As it was an
honors course, the curriculum was extremely aggressive. We covered basic programming in both
C++ and MATLAB, a number of numerical methods, and how to write strong technical papers.
Since then, I have taken more advanced courses, but this one had the greatest effect on me because
it impressed upon me the vast potential of computation methods. Many of the problems that are
difficult to solve analytically could now be solved in the blink of an eye,

A Plant Based Diet as a Prescriptive Measure: Should Health Care Providers Recommend A Vegan
Diet to High Risk Patients For the Prevention or Treatment of Non Communicable or Chronic
Diseases?
David Arthur, MS, PA S
The term non communicable disease refers to set of chronic, slowly progressing, long duration
illnesses that are not infectious and are responsible for more deaths globally than any other
cause.1 In 2011, in most high and middle income countries, non communicable diseases were
responsible for more deaths than all other causes combined.1 These same chronic diseases are also
referred to as lifestyle diseases by some practitioners, as they are recognized as having lifestyle
choice as primary risk factors, and possibly, treatment modalities centered around lifestyle
modification.2 The four primary non communicable diseases, as identified by the World Health
Organization, are cardiovascular disease, malignant neoplasm, respiratory disease, and diabetes
mellitus.3 The power of lifestyle choices to effectively address some of the most vexing chronic
diseases of our time is well established.4 Adherence to four healthy lifestyle tenets not smoking, not
being obese, getting at least thirty minutes of moderate activity per day, and eating a diet
consisting primarily of vegetables, fruit, and whole grains, may have the net effect of addressing
the primary sources of disease and death in western society.4 Strictly adhering to each of these
healthy lifestyle choices

What Are Agreeable People
According to Robbins and Judge (2013) agreeableness refers to individual s propensity to defer
others. Highly agreeable people are cooperative, warm and trusting and enormously likeable.
Top performers refers to individuals who are highly productive and person who always worked on
developing their work skills and job performance (Harpham, n.d.). Top performers are usually
very decisive and determined in every single task they do, and most of them are aspire to be leaders
by working hard and focusing on their life goals.
In our opinion, employer should choose agreeable employees over top performers because most
of agreeable individuals are easily adapt to new environment and company s workforce policy.

Agreeableness reflects individual differences in concern with cooperation and social harmony.
Agreeable people are likely to get along with people effortlessly. These people are certainly to help
others at work despite any moods and rewards (Ilies, Scott Judge, 2006). They are extremely
considerate, friendly, generous, helpful, and willing to compromise their interests with others.
Thus, they will create a warm environment in the company and there is no doubt that their
colleagues would feel comfortable than ever.
Agreeable people also have an optimistic view of human nature and always look things in a bright
side. They believe people are basically honest, decent, and trustworthy (Lall Sharma, 2009). They

The Road to Serfdom Valid Today as it Was in 1944 Essay
The Road to Serfdom Valid Today as it Was in 1944
The following paper will explore the book, The Road to Serfdom, by F.A. Hayek. I challenge that
many of Hayek s assumptions are still valid today even though his book was written in 1944.
Hayek s assumptions regarding 1) the government s rule of the law, 2) the concept of government
directed economic activity that includes artificial separation of economics and politics, and 3) the
notion that the unscrupulous and uninhibited are likely to be more successful, are still true in
today. Hayek was anti central planning yet not anti welfare state, and he was a libertarian. As a
libertarian he believed that the emphasis of the government should be on individual freedom. ...

The most recent example of this locally involves the Port of Olympia. The port discriminates
against individual businesses that it believes are not consistent with the plan for the area. Lack of
controls allows for government control of industries that can lead to discrimination based on
individual beliefs and values. There is no doubt that the Olympia government maintains enormous
power over good and evil. One has only to look to the Seattle Tacoma Airport as another prime
example. The Port district has imminent domain allowing it to take private property for the good of
the people. It appears to be more for the good of the Port. The Port is currently acquiring property
under the pretense of needing to build a third runway. It is not relevant that the permit for the
runway will be held up in the court system for many years. Of the property acquired, much is from
individual homeowners. The Port acquired these properties at residential property zoned prices and
then land became industrially zoned. The individual property owners lost not only their homes but
also a great deal of money. The Port also decided what businesses would remain within the

Modern Philosophy Of The Modern World And The External World
Lauren Estes
Modern Philosophy
Prof. Corsa As humans, I do not think we know as much as we think we know. Perhaps this is the
reason why in matters of Philosophical research some claim to have discovered the truth, while
others declare that finding it is an impossibility, and other are still seeking it (SE Handout 31). The
word truth in this quote is ambiguous. I believe that we will spend the rest of eternity seeking the
truth. The truth can mean many things to many different people. What is true for you may not be
true for me. Many of the modern philosophers dance around the question, What is real and what is
not? Although there are many arguments for and against the internal world and the external world,
I tend to lead towards the skeptics point of view. I do this on the simple notion that many of the
skeptics arguments are hard to refute. Much like Sextus Empiricus, I argue that we cannot know
anything with absolute certainty about the external world. Those who say that Sceptic deny
appearances seem to me to be ignorant of what we say (SE Handout 38). Sextus Empricus does not
deny appearances, he just is aware that we might not know for certain anything about the external
world. Sextus Empiricus infers, honey appears to use to have a sweetening quality. This much we
can concede, because it affects us with a sensation of sweetness. The question, however, is whether
it is sweet in an absolute sense (SE Handout 38). Skeptics are not crazy humans that simply

Breast Enlargement 5 Non Surgical Alternatives
Summary: A lot of options can be considered over surgery for breast enlargement. The popular
altenatives include Enlargement pumps, Fat transfer, Contouring among others.
No one but women understand the need and importance for breast enlargement. Some do it to
shape their personality while some do it in order to appear in a particular way. Whatever be the
reason, all women should understand the health risks surgical breast enhancement procedures may
carry. Non Surgical Procedures are always favoured over surgical augmentation procedures. The
primary alternative to a surgery or implant include the following.
Enlargement Pumps
The expansion of breast tissue is a favourable way of increasing breast size. Breast Enlargement
takes place as a result of the pumps acting as a suction on the tissues. This encourages enhanced
blood flow and increases the possibility of increased tissue growth. This helps in breast
enhancement as they increase in size. However a lot of endurance is needed to reap rewards from
this process as extensive and motivated use in the pertinent way is required over a minimum period
of three months. Results cannot be anticipated over night.

This is one of the most popular breast enlargement ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As unorthodox as it sounds, make up can be used to give a whole new appearance to the breasts

complimenting proportions in order to make breasts seem larger or smaller than they actually are.
A shadowing effect can be brought about with the help of a bronzer that makes the dark area look
farther from actual. Make up can also be used to make the shaded area appear closer. Thus,
effective contouring can help in providing breasts a more enhanced

A Behavioral Therapist Position For Kids With Autism And...
Midterm The Problem (1 Page) Most companies expect their employees not to just do the work
but to do good work efficiently. At the organization I am a part of it is considered a helping
profession and people either do work in the office or out in the field providing services. However,
when you need to get something done, people do not seem to accomplish tasks at work because of
the lack of support or the distractions that occur. There are three main issues that occur in my job
surrounding the lack of efficient communication, guidance from managers, and scheduling
conflicts. Through analyzing these issues a specific job may be created to help solve these
problems affecting this work environment. I am in a behavioral therapist position for kids with
Autism and related disorders at a small firm in Anaheim, California. I mostly work in homes with
the kids and their families. Behavioral therapist needs to have adequate communication with
supervisors and parent consultants since they overlap with therapists about once a month. The issue
within communication is not the lack of resources because employees are provided with the
technology and service to communicate. The issue lies within the efficiency. Since managers have
a great influence on making a better work environment they are essential to making a team
successful. Managers do not frequently communicate the updated tasks that need to be

The Effects Of Sports Related Concussions On Central...
ABSTRACT
Sport related concussion is a common injury amongst athletes. This study was conducted in order
to investigate whether or not sport related concussions had an effect on central auditory processing
abilities. The study implemented a case control study design. Two hundred athletes were selected
to participate in this study. One hundred participants served as the case group and had sustained
two or more sport related concussions in a three year period. The other one hundred participants
served as the control group. Concussions were identified by a team physician using the SCAT3. All
participants completed an auditory processing disorder test battery consisting of the PPT, RGDT,
Dichotic Digits Test, CST, Nu 6 Low Frequency Filter Test and a MLD test. An independent
samples t test was used to determine the results.
INTRODUCTION
In 2006, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that approximately 1.6 million
to 3.8 million sport related concussions occur each year in the United States (Langois, Rutland
Brown, Wald, 2006). Sport related concussions are a subset of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and
are defined as a complex pathophysiological process affecting the brain (McCrory et al., 2012). The
typical signs and symptoms associated with a concussion include confusion, amnesia, headache,
dizziness, nausea, loss of balance, and/or poor concentration (Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, 2010).

Similarities And Differences Between Carpet Weavers And...
Through the poems, Carpet Weavers and Mid Term Break, poets Carol Rumens and Seamus
Heaney communicate a loss of innocence, offering different interpretations on similar themes. Both
poems portray the plight of children experiencing a harsh reality which undermines social
conventions which shelter children and forces upon them heavy responsibility. In Carpet Weavers
the children ascend to maturity, being deprived of a childhood due to their responsibility to earn
money labouring in impoverished conditions. Whereas, Mid Term Break traverses the roles of
death and bereavement rather than poverty and hardship. Seamus Heaneyrecounts the death of his
younger brother, revealing the nature of children and how they cope with loss.

The Many Accomplishments of Sacajawea
Sakakawea or Sacajawea was a Lemhi Shoshone woman, who is well famed for Leading Lewis
and Clark on their famous expedition to find the Pacific Ocean through the Western United
States, acting as an interpreter and guide. She traveled thousands of miles from North Dakota to
the Pacific Ocean between 1804 and 1806, while bearing child in her womb. The National
American Woman Suffrage Association of the early twentieth century adopted her as the
symbol of women s worth and independence, erecting several statues, and plaques in her memory,
and doing much to spread the story of her accomplishments. Born in 1788, probable early 1790
s, in what is now known as the state of Idaho, she was born into an Agaidika, or Salmon Eater,
tribe of Lemhi Shoshone between Kenny Creek and Agency Creek. She was one of the Snake
People or Shodhone. Her name in Hidasta was Tsi ki ka wi as, Bird Woman . In Shoshone, her
name means Boat Pusher. In 1800, when she was roughly twelve years old, she and several other
girls were kidnapped during a raid by the Hidasta tribe, (also known as Minnentarees) in a battle
that resulted in the death among the Shoshone of four men, four women, and several boys.

The Hoosier School Master By Edward Eggleston
In the book, The Hoosier School Master, author Edward Eggleston depicts life in a 19th century
rural community. His story reflects the lives of those who might have lived there at the time.
Eggleston narrates the book from a point of view that closely reflects what life would have been
like in rural Indiana, where he includes facts about the community and its members, as well as
what it was like to be a student and a teacher in the 19th century. Flat Creek offers all examples of
the experiences of a not only a teacher, but a teacher who has moved to a small unknown
community. It also offers a perspective students and community members would have on schooling,
and its value. I argue that due to the limited resources, the community s involvement, and
geographical location, students were unable to receive a well rounded educationin a rural
community during the 19th century. I will use the book and class materials to support my
argument that there were limited resources, lower quality of life, high teacher turnover, and limited
opportunities for female and minority students (lack thereof).
Limited resources were available in rural communities during the 19th and early 20th century. The
book has several examples that illustrate the limited resources Flat Creek, or a similar community,
might have had during that time. First, the school itself was most likely small and had a
deteriorating structure. I found it interesting that there was a pond underneath the schoolhouse, and

Social Ignorance Of A Child With Down Syndrome
It is a common belief that certain things will never happen to us. We often convince ourselves
that the odds will never reach us or the ones we love. This statement remains true for the
likelihood of the effects of down syndrome. Although the syndrome is often misunderstood, it is
very true that those affected by it lead a very active and healthy life. I, myself am guilty of the
social ignorance of down syndrome, that is until my cousin Joby was diagnosed with down

I Am A Professional Athlete
I was sixteen years old when I was asked the question every High School student has to
eventually answer. Where do you think you ll be ten years from now? My answer was always,
Playing professional soccer in Europe. It seems like a big clichГ© when a high school student
responds with wanting to be a professional athlete. But it was my passion, I worked very hard at
it and I was good at it. So it only made sense to go with my heart. I knew to be a professional
soccer player was what I wanted and I never hesitated to say it. Until I was asked, Well, what if
that doesn t work out. Then what will you do? Now, I know it wasn t wrong for my teacher to ask
that question but it did change the way I thought about my life and my future. I ll admit I went to a
Technical High School, so it wasn t the best school to get scouted out of for any sport, no matter
how great my soccer career was at that school. Now I am Eighteen years old and graduating high

my Dad but for me it was a stepping stone to my future, as I was getting ready to have try outs

An Analysis Of Frank Lloyd Wright On Architecture, And...
In life, there are things that happen to us; all of us or some of us that are beyond comprehension
and that leave a lasting impact into our lives. Some of the things are a glimpse of what the future
could imply to us and form a platform from which important things will be built. In the last few
centuries, the dancing industry in the world had not been considered as an important art, and
therefore, dancing was basically done informally for entertaining oneself or for layman s reasons.
That was until a girl was born at the end of the of the 18th century, a girl who would grow into
prominence as far as dancing was concerned; revolutionizing the danceworld and setting new
platforms through which modern dancewould be established. Her influence on the dance and
choreography would last for over seven decades, and her influence has been reminiscent to that of
Picasso on the modern visual arts, Frank Lloyd Wright on architecture, and Stravinsky on music.
The name of this girl who went from heights to heights and established the modern dancing and
choreography in the world was Martha Graham.
Martha Graham was an American dancer and choreographer, born in the city of Allegheny, which
would later become part of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. However, when Martha turned fourteen years
old, her family moved to Santa Barbara, California. Her father was an alienist, a practitioner of an
early form of psychiatry, or what could be described as using physical movements to treat physical

Shortly after that, In J.C.R Licklider began conceptualize the idea developing a globally accessible
network of computers that would allow access of applications and data remotely throughout the
world, wherever the internet existed. Of course all of this would require huge bandwidth
capabilities that at that time were not available. However, this all became possible in the 1990 s
when the bandwidth of the internet had evolved to be large enough to bring cloud computing to the
world ( history of cloud computing, 2009).
Once the internet became a viable medium for cloud based computing, companies started offering
applications to the masses. In early 2000 s, Amazon developed a cloud based tool, Amazon
Mechanical Turk, which offered cloud computing, data storage and artificial intelligence. Later, in
2006, Amazon released its second generation cloud services known as Elastic Compute Cloud
(EC2) that allowed individuals and organizations to rent computing space to run all their computer
applications and data storage needs. With EC2, Amazon had truly brought in to the concept of
cloud computing. After that computer giants like Google, Microsoft and Apple began to offer
affordable, useful applications for computers and smart devices that were able to on the cloud and
not by the devises. Consequently, there are tens of thousands of such cloud based applications

Corn Ethanol Controversy And The Chemical Formula Of Ethanol
Corn Ethanol Controversy!
Ethanol (CH3CH2OH) is a clear, colorless liquid. It is also known as ethyl alcohol, EtOH, and
grain alcohol. Ethanol is widely produced by processing grains such as corn or starch and sugar
crops. The grain is first milled, then fermented with yeast and different enzymes to turn the grain s
starches into alcohol(EPA). A distillation process then increases the ethanolconcentrations, basically
the same process a whiskey maker would use to make whiskey. Of course, law mandates that a
denaturant is added, making the liquid unsafe for drinking. In the process, waste grain is
produced and sold as farm animal feed. Bioethanol, can be made from many types of trees and
grasses, but the procedure is much harder. The chemical formula of ethanol is the same whether it
is made from starch and sugar based feedstocks, such as corn grain (widely used in United States),
sugar cane (Brazil), or from cellulosic feedstocks (such as wood chips or crop residues). (The
Alternative Fuels Data Center)
In the United States, ethanol is primarily used as a blending element in the production of gas and
as an alternative fuel. More than 95% of the gasoline sold in the United States contains ethanol.
Most of ethanol blending into U.S. motor gasoline occurs to meet the requirements of the 1990
Clean Air Act (RFG Fuel) and the Renewable Fuel Standard set forth in the Energy Independence
and Security Act of 2007. (U.S Energy Information Administration)

The Issue Of Political Participation
Political participation is a right afforded to United States citizens; it is our civic duty to participate
and is ultimately a privilege. The founders believed that it was the newly founded government s
responsibility to protect the basic rights of the people. With those beliefs they made the United
States of America, a two tiered, three branch democracyand therefore the people hold the power to
freely elect who they want to represent them in government. The local representatives, we elect
push for laws of interest to the majority and provide them with the resources that they need. The
president implements and enforces laws that Congress passes. With such social ramifications and
power granted to government representatives it would seem as though nearly everyone should be
invested in political matters and actively engaged in political participation. Among the easiest ways
to get involved politically is through the votingprocess and elections, others are symbolic
participation, civil society participation, protesting, marching, contacting public officials, being part
of electioncampaigns and even running for office. While voting is among the easiest ways to be a
part of this democracy, the turnout is low. The right to vote has opened up to a larger number of
people through legislation, but still the turnout rate is low. There are factors that show a correlation
in the chance of whether or not one will vote, and are very telling in some instances. Voting in the

There can be no denying that the first half of the 20th century was such an important period in
Chinese history. Within the span of 38 years, China overthrew two different national governments.
In 1911, the Qing Dynasty was overthrown, and the Republic of China (ROC) took its place. In

were significant factors that differentiated the two. For us to compare and contrast the two, we

The causes of the 1911 revolution could be attributed to an unorthodox combination of government
reforms and anti Manchu sentiments spurred by a new wave of Chinese nationalism. Regarding

Post Korean War Relations and the Rise of the People s Republic of China
The Korean War was able to develop the People s Republic of China as a major up and coming
nation. The mid 1950s saw the rise of Chinese agricultural collectivization, making them an
influential power in the world. With the country improving every year that passes, Mao wanted to
move in the direction of Socialism, but was worried that those in the CCP were restricting him on
making that leap. In a statement in 1957, Mao claimed that the Imperialist nations, like the United
States, are more afraid of Socialist nations than the other way around (p.198). Mao shows how the
transition into Socialism has created increased tension between Sino Soviet relations. He states, At
present there exists some controversies between Chine and the Soviet Union. Their ways of
thinking, behavior, and historical traditions differ from ours (p.198). This was the first public
statement made by the Chinese that distanced themselves away from Soviet authority. Mao s
response to these differences is that they must try to persuade them. He says that there are
differences within the Communist party, and that many of those different ideas are on par with
what he wants to bring using Socialism (p.199). As Mao became more powerful, and people started
buying into his system more and more, he was able to implement his first major plan of the Chinese
Revolution: The Great Leap Forward. As this plan got major attention within China

Letter From Birmingham Jail Summary
Summary for Letter From Birmingham Jail Martin Luther King Jr. wrote the Letter From
Birmingham Jail on April 16, 1963 and it began a huge transformation for the Civil Rights
Movement. In his letter he is basically responding to an advertisement from the Birmingham news.
He was extremely reasonable and modest all throughout his letter. He goes into great detail about
how even though the protestors at the movement were breaking federal laws but, their actions
obeyed the moral law. When he said this in his letter he was referring to St. Augustine because he
says An unjust law is no law at all . (King Jr., para.14). It was a nonviolent campaign and there
were 4 basic steps being followed, collection of facts to determine whether injustices

Identifying The Devils In Rachel Carson s Silent Spring
Arnold Schweitzer once said man can hardly even recognize the devils in his own creation . This is
the point that Rachel Carson argues throughout her book Silent Spring. Carson believes that though
the scientific revolutions that occurred since the turn of the 19th century may seem to be solely
beneficial, they have disastrous repercussions. In particular, Carson claims that man s newly
established ability to have dominion over natureputs the world in a dangerous position. If humans
let the power of controlling nature get to their head and refuse to attempt to understand the possible
consequences of their actions, the Earth is destined to turn into a contaminated wasteland. She
argues that if mankind continues to believe that it is superior to all around it and thereby continues
to rapidly and impetuously alter nature to fit its own desires, then man is using scienceand
technology to catalyze its own doom. However, Carson does not view... Show more content on

To her, nature and science are not mutually exclusive and can exist in tandem. In fact, she even says
that where man has been intelligent enough to observe and emulate nature he is capable of creating
progress that is beneficial for both nature and man.In this case, humans are looking to nature for the
solutions. Rather than seeing themselves as above nature and seeking to control it, they are
observing it and its patterns to obtains a solution. Therefore the problem for Carson lies in the
human superiority that has developed alongside the expansion of science. She criticizes the
human desire for the control of nature which she believes is a phrase born of arrogance and
instead opt for, as Dr. Briejer says, humbleness . Carson thinks that in order to truly thrive and
proliferate, man should not wage a war against nature, but instead look to it as an equal and address

Steps in Banana Shoot-Tip Culture
In this era of science and technology, inventions are being made to improve the economic marketing
especially. One of the new inventions is from agriculture sector, which is plant tissue culture.
Nowadays, banana tissue culture is one of the famous inventions created by agriculturist. Robinson
and SaГєco (2010) mentioned that, banana is ranked second among the other fruit in most
important fruit crop since it is high fruit production and high demands in the market. As elaborated
by Singh, Uma, Selvarajan and Karihaloo (2011), there are five steps in banana shoot tip culture
namely selecting of sucker, sterilizing of instruments, medium and environment, introducing the
explant to Murashigee Skoog (MS) medium, sub culturing the callus, and lastly is weaning and
hardening of plantlets. (refer to Figure 1 in Appendix 1) The first step in banana shoot tip tissue
culture technique is selection of healthy sucker. During this stage, a healthy sucker is chosen when
it is about four months of age. The healthy and young sucker is selected because they have higher
rate differentiation, which helps them to grow rapidly. Then, the outer tissue and the root of the
sucker is pared away until the size of meristem tissue is suitable to the size of petri dish, which is
about 1.0 to 2.0 cm diameter (Singh et al., 2011). Next, the tissue is sterilized with bleach and it is
rinsed with distilled water for three times. The second step is sterilizing of the instruments, medium
and environments.

Colin Luther Powell an American statesman and a retired four star general once uttered this quote
Surround yourself with people who take their work seriously, but not themselves, those who work

completely changed my life. Throughout the first two years of high school, I was not concerned on
my educationto say the least. I am ashamed to admit this, but I was more focused on fitting in with

To Kill A Mockingbird Courage Analysis
Courage is portrayed to be a special kind of knowledge or gift that you are born with. It can be
demonstrated as rescuing a princess or even standing up to the local school bully. The
webstermerriam dictionary entry for courage is, mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and
withstand danger, fear, or difficulty .1 In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, she uses
courageas a theme for her characters and demonstrates how each person is able to use courage as
their forte.
One example of a courageous character in the book is Jem. Throughout the book, Jem is known
for having courage, just in different ways. Go home, Jem, he said. Take Scout and Dill home. We

She said she meant to break herself of it before she died, and that s what she did, (148) This is the
primary example of Mrs. Dubose being courageous. She had enough strength and desire to die free

The most recognizable source of courage is found in Atticus. He always knows what to do and is
an example to Scout, Jem, and the town of Maycomb. Atticus stood up to sister Alexandra s bullying
tactics when she tried to force him to fire Calpurnia, telling her that their black housekeeper was

is justified in using such a derogative term because it is common . Atticus shows moral courage
just by accepting to defend a black man accused of raping a white woman since ... I d hoped to
get through life without a case of this kind... (Ch 9). Atticus then attempts to shame the all white
jury when he reminds them that it is an ... evil assumption that all Negroes lie, that all Negroes
are basically immoral beings... (Ch 20) and that Tom s skin color should not matter in a courtroom
where all men are created equal. He implores them In the name of God, do your duty... In the name
of God, believe him. (Ch 20) These specific examples in the text prove to show light in the time

Comparing Jackson Pollock And Chuck Close
This essay will compare and contrast the work of Jackson Pollock and Chuck Close, specifically
the Abstract Expressionist Number 1A of 1948 and the photorealist Self Portrait of 1991. I will
explore the similarities in the process of these two artists, despite their end result appearing to be
poles apart. Both artists are and were as obsessed with the process of making art as much as with
the outcome. Close and Pollock both employed highly inventive techniques and cultivated a
signature style that is instantly recognizable. Number 1A is an early realization of Pollock s
distinctive approach to dripping paint directly onto the canvas. This technique quickly became a
statement on the aesthetic and psychological power of large scale abstract painting. At five feet and

The energy of the painting is overwhelming. It is an intricate web of oil colors with black
enamel. The piece is mainly comprised of black and white, but as one tries to look into the
painting subtle red pink and light blue can be found. The many layers of overlapping webs of
black and white seem to be a sort of veil for whatever lies underneath. Making it challenging to
interpret and look into the piece. No place for the eye to settle and rest. There are no figures
hidden within the drips. No hint of a representational image. At first there is a sense or reckless
abandon and a wild application of paint. After closer examining it is clear Pollock s strokes are
controlled, swift, assured, almost mechanical. You can trace the movements of his arm as the drips
of paint fell from sticks and paint brushes. Ranging from puddles where paint gathered and then

Role Of Minor Characters In April Morning By Howard Fast
Can one day really turn a boy into a man? The novel April Morning, written by Howard Fast is
about a boy Living in prewar America. He changes throughout the novel in just one day. This
change would not have happened if it were not for the minor characters of the novel. Minor
characters may not have the biggest role in a story, but they help shape the main characterof a story.
Levi Cooper, the childish and scared little brother, Granny Cooper, the wise and loving
grandmother, and Ruth Simmons the sassy but very caring, loving interest, are the minor characters

Disconcerting Behaviour in The Wasp Factory and A...
Compare the ways writers present disconcerting behaviour in both texts so far.
The following will elucidate how disturbing behaviour is conveyed in the novel The Wasp Factory
by Iain Banks and the play, A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams.
In A Streetcar Named Desire, the theme of violence is very frequent in the character Stanley
Kowalski. Stanley is a married, young man, who comes across to the reader as quite an enraged
person with animalistic attributes. A prime insinuation of Stanley s difference to regular humans is
when Stella DuBois (Stanley s wife) explains to her sister that Stanley is of a different species ,
foreshadowing that Williams may be warning the reader that Stanley is capable of things that are

Another indication of Stella s dependence in Stanley is when she claimed that she can t stand when
he (Stanley) is away for a night ... I cry on his lap like a baby. Although this highlights that Stella is
highly dependent on Stanley, we cannot ignore the fact that she loves him too.
Similar to Stanley Kowalski, the protagonist of The Wasp Factory, Frank Cauldhame also
behaves violently; however in Frank s case violence is directed mostly towards animals as he is
aware of his superiority to them, just as Stanley is aware he is superior to his wife. The reader
follows account of how Frank fills his long, solitary summer victimising animals such as rabbits, as
well as killing wasps on a daily basis.
Frank s annihilation of rabbits on the island is a crucial example of how violence is a
conventional part of his life as if he s accepted that killing and deliberately hurting things will
always be normal to him. Frank throttled the rabbit, swinging it in front of him ... its neck held on
the thin black line of rubber tubing . It is highly disturbing how a 16 year old is comfortable in
inflicting pain on innocent creatures, not to mention killing them as well as finding it rather
amusing, as he claims I felt good after his genocidal of the rabbits. Moreover, Frank does not
undergo any remorse after he has committed these harsh doings, because after he killed a cute little
bunny he kicked it into the water.

Safety Issues for Women Traveling Solo
Stay Safe But Don t Stay Home
By Zahara Heckscher
Zaraha Heckscher(left) with a Musonda friend in Zambia from Safety Issues for Women Traveling
Solo: Stay Safe But Don t Stay Home.
Women are frequently warned about independent international travel. Unfortunately, it is true that
women are much more likely than men to be the victims of sexual harassment and sexual assault. In
virtually every country I have visited I heard from female travelers and volunteers who had been
subjected to frequent come ons, unwanted touching, or inappropriate comments, in the words of
one Peace Corps volunteer. Harassment and assault range from verbal harassment, to crude
propositions, to groping (especially by men in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(In India, a toe ring on your second toe means you re not available.) Many volunteers learn
strategies from local women. In Mexico, for example, women often sit together, even if they don t
know each other. Other tips, in the words of previous travelers, include:
Be careful about letting your guard down while on vacation. Travel with a group at night.
Before you leave home, talk to other women who have traveled in the countries you plan to visit.
The in country program director cautioned us against looking or staring at the men for too long
at a time; this could be misinterpreted since the women in the local villages were taught not to
make eye contact with the men. Be ready to give up some freedoms that you are used to at
home. Females must take care with their dealings with any male older than 14 and younger than
75. I was often misunderstood at first and didn t realize that plain speaking and looking at a man
directly when speaking to him could be misinterpreted as flirting. I learned quickly to be very
formal and to always involve several people in any conversation. Don t be afraid to ask about the
security situation where you are posted and find out about any prior incidents that may have
occurred in the area. When it comes to your life, you can t be too cautious. No matter what you
do or don t do, remember that it is not your fault if you are assaulted. If you are raped or assaulted,

Reflection On Issues And Ethics
Issues and Ethics: Reflection Paper Assignment
Fareeha Ikram
Ethical Dilemma:
1.You are working with a man who has a history of suicide attempts and has been hospitalized on
more than one occasion. He tells you that he has found it very hard to get help in the past,
because whenever he tells a counselor he is feeling suicidal they immediately call for help and
he is hospitalized. He tells you that at those times he really just needs someone to talk to and
wishes he could find a counselor he could confide in when he is feeling suicidal who would not
call an ambulance and seek psychiatric help for him. He is a very high risk for suicide given his
past attempts and frequent thoughts that include a detailed plan. He tells you that he wants to tell
you something but is worried about how you will react. He wonders if he can tell you and if you
can promise that you will just help him and not involve emergency services, if you cannot make
that promise he will not tell you.
Part A
1.Step One: Identify the problem
The presenting problem is that as the counselor to a man with a history of suicide attempts and
hospitalization, I m in a situation where he has asked me to promise to not report any information
he confides in me to emergency services.
The major participant in this situation is the man as his life and safety are at risk, given his
troubling history, and as the counselor, it is my responsibility to help and support him. Therefore, I
must use this 8 step ethical decision making model to decide the best course of action to solve this
ethical dilemma. 2.Step Two: Identify the potential issues involved
The issues involved are ethical and legal. First of all, choosing to remain quite in this situation
can be a form of enabling, but it will respect the client s promise. But, if I were to report this to
emergency services, I would be violating the client s confidentiality and his trust. This is a moral
and ethical issue. This issue is also legal in nature because while counselors must maintain
confidentiality, as per certain provincial and territorial laws, there is a duty to protect/warn/inform in
case of imminent danger to the client, even when it is inflicted by one s own self.
One can also

My Passion For Music And The Music Industry
I have always had a passion for music and the music industry, and my parents and I both knew that

broad category and there are so many moving parts within this sector. I chose music promotion for
my career project, because it would allow me to go in and out of different departments within the
musicindustry, along being able to work alongside creative individuals for artists. Pursuing a

You do not need a specific degree or even a higher level of educationin order to be successful in
this industry. This industry, and a career in music promotion is all about networking, ambition, a
tenacious attitude and a passion for your work. Unlike many other professions, the daily
workload is not a fixed amount or even a fixed measure of time. There may be day where you are
working from sun up to sun down, meeting other record executives or members, making phone
calls left and right, or on the road traveling to your next event. But then, there might be some
moments when your job is to solely make sure the artists you are managing are getting to their
venues on time and meeting all the appropriate industry people. Although all of this can seem
quiet fast pace and a bit chaotic, one of the many benefits of this career is the expectation that the
artists you are promoting have of you. What do I mean by that? The artists actually expect you to
hang out with them for the night after a big show, or even right before shows. These artists are
always down to party, and they need a crew to have fun with, and as a music promoter, you are a
part of this crew! There are not many other industries with this same expectation.
Like I mentioned earlier, a career in music promotion does not require a specific degree or level of
certification, but that does

Even before other companies recognized the importance of being green, sustainability and environmental stewardship were part of the Herman Miller culture (Shipper et al., 2011). Herman Miller became a founding partner of the U.S. Green Building Council and the Tropical Forest Foundation (Shipper et al., 2011). The company discontinued the use of endangered wood and chose to use wood from sustainable sources instead (Shipper et al., 2011). Some of Herman Miller s products were recognized for use in buildings attaining a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification (Shipper et al., 2011). Environmental stewardship is just a small part of the values that are important to the Herman Miller culture. (See Exhibit 1.) Each member of the Herman Miller organization recognizes these core values and are held to these standards from plant worker to board member (Shipper et al., 2011). Herman Miller saw tough times in the early 21st century. Sales fell flat as the dot com bubble burst (Shipper et al., 2011). Shortly thereafter, the events of September 11th, 2001 caused sales to continue to decrease (Shipper et al., 2011). The difficult decision to abandon the company s long standing no layoff policy was made to keep the company alive. • 5. National Literacy Crusade Of 1980 Essay The Sandinistas National Literacy Crusade of 1980 (CNA) significantly reduced the rate of illiteracy in Nicaragua from an estimated forty three percent to twelve percent. Improvements to the literacy rate were short lived. The instability of Nicaragua under the Sandinistas (1979 1990) effectively froze state sponsored education programs, minimizing the potential of educational efforts after the 1980 campaign. The weakened Sandinista government, as well as inadequate preparation of post CNA teachers, allowed the newly literate to lose their literacy. Although the campaign failed to permanently reduce illiteracy, it did serve as a catalyst for a new brand of Nicaraguan nationalism amongst young Nicaraguans who served as volunteer teachers. The campaign allowed women to transcend the traditional social and hierarchical boundaries of Nicaraguan society. Women assumed positions of authority as teachers, challenging the historically patriarchal norms of Nicaraguan culture. Introduction In July of 1979, after years of fighting the repressive Somoza regime, the Frente Sandinista de LiberacГon Nacional (FSLN) and their allies seized Managua and with it the seat of Nicaragua s government. The deposition of the Anastasio Somoza Debayle marked the end of a four decades long dynasty defined by cruelty and cronyism. Under the thumb of the Somocista government, the majority of Nicaraguans were denied or lacked access to education, health services, running drinking water, and in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. I Heard A Fly Buzz When I Died Mikalyn Hutchins Bozeman AP Prep English 9 30 October 2015 I Heard a Fly Buzz When I Died by Emily Dickinson Emily Dickinson was likely influenced by epitaphs on tombstones. She uses floral language like Frances Osgood, and did not write the way the general public thought women should write, like the way of Helen Hunt Jackson. It is possible that is the reason she did not publish her works (Petrino). In the poem I heard a fly buzz when I died , Emily Dickinson uses metaphors in order to say that everyone dies and it is not always the most desirable way to die. Emily Dickinson was part of the American Transcendentalist movement. The word transcendental means character, thought, or action, so it is no surprise the movement was called Transcendentalism. The transcendentalists often worked together, unlike poets from other movements (webexhibits.org). The transcendentalists, particularly the women, often wrote about death and many people wonder why (Noble). The poem I Heard a Fly Buzz When I Died is about a person lying on their death bed after having a will written. The persona, the person telling the story as a narrator, has been distracted by a fly. Emily Dickinson used metaphors, foreshadowing, and personification in I Heard a fly Buzz When I Died. A metaphor is a comparison of two unlike things. An extended metaphor is a metaphor that extends through stanzas or even through the entire poem. The poem is an extended metaphor, comparing the random, ugly fly and an ... • 7. The Lighthouse By Virginia Woolf The purpose of a lighthouse is to serve as a navigational aid to shores or ports and to warn boats of dangerous areas. To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf is a novel that teaches how one person can affect the lives of people around them by, in a sense, shining a light on the person s specific traits. In the novel, Mrs. Ramsay is one of the main characters that unfortunately does not make it to the end of the story, but her presence is shadowed throughout the novel where she is not there physically. Virginia Woolf used the lighthouse as analogy for Mrs. Ramsay s existence in the first part of the book and after her death during the third section of the book. Mrs. Ramsay s death allows the reader to realize that she is the lighthouse that highlights and unifies her family and all the guests during the time spent together at the Ramsay s summer home. Though Mrs. Ramsay was the conjoining light that brought people together, Woolf decides to kill Mrs. Ramsay in part two of the novel. During the moments of Mrs. Ramsay lighting, Woolf incorporates dark thoughts that expresses a different side to the novel. Bitter and black, half way down, in the darkness, in the shaft which ran from the sunlight to the depths, perhaps a tear formed; a tear fell... (p.32). Woolf is reflecting on her perception of death and how she dealt with the thoughts of killing herself. As for Woolf s own death, she left her house leaving behind a note to Vanessa Bell, her sister, and a note to Leonard Woolf, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Latin American Imperialism Research Paper The countries within the continents of Asia and Africa and Latin American countries were all trying to overcome the struggles of European imperialism. Europeans had migrated to these areas to establish an economic system that would benefit European countries. Their attempts toward autonomy was a battle all in itself, but increased the level of nationalism among the people of these countries. After World War I, India established organizations known as the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League to lead their efforts toward independence. Wilson s Fourteen Points and the Russian Revolution played a major role. Mahandes Gandhi, an Indian nationalist, led the movement toward independence for India. He was raised as a Hindu and studied law in England. He was opposed to the idea of the caste or class system especially the exclusion of the Untouchables. During his leadership, the British allowed the Indians to self rule , but this lifestyle was rejected by the Muslims because the wanted complete independence. As a... Samuel is one of the first talked about pre literary prophets in the bible perhaps because he anointed the first king of the United Kingdom. He is a prophet by definition because he possessed the ability to converse with the almighty Yahweh. Samuel and Saul are key players to the rise of the kingdom but Saul runs into trouble and disobeys God, which leads him to his own inevitable demise. In 1 Samuel 28: 1 25 Yahweh guides Saul to his death because he has outright deceived and disobeyed God. This passage sets an example to obey Yahweh; otherwise he will inflict punishment ... Because of his realized hypocrisy, he disguised himself and visited the medium his servants had sought out in Endor. He told the medium to call upon Samuel and so she immediately suspected that he is Saul. She knew that her work was extremely illegal by Saul s court, so she became afraid until he reassured her that he was permitting the act in that occasion. She then called upon Samuel. Samuel apparently took over the medium s body or appears in some other way to Saul. So Saul did what he came there for and asked for advise on his latest predicament. The irritated and disturbed Samuel explained that Yahweh is taking away his kingdom and giving it to David because of his disobedience of not carrying out the Lord s punishment against the Amalekites (according to Mc Carter the dead had some way of knowing God s plans and had access to them). So, Saul fell to the ground in anguish from the news and lack of energy caused by fasting. The medium quickly attended to him and forced him to eat. Saul and his servants then left. • 11. Of Aristotle And Hobbes Ideas About The Origin And Purpose... Aristotle and Hobbes Ideas about the Origin and Purpose of Political Life From the very ancient times political life was formed by groups of people who were having different thoughts and ideas about how to rule or how to control others and their properties. As long as that happened, the differences had led to misunderstanding and chaos among the tribes and as now called politics. Each political community formed, a different problem came to life. All this was a way to undercover the best ways of ruling and leading others in places all around the world. The first place that appeared to be like a political community was households. Of course political life was very simple at that time because of having fewer people in a place or community comparing to today s world. Also, the fact that every bit of human mind is into having power or leading others it made it more difficult to get along in one place without having a better or stronger person leading them or controlling them and telling them what to do. • 13. Physics Of Physics And Engineering Mechanics By the time I reached senior high school, I knew I wanted to study mechanical engineering, but I hadn t decided on a focus. Then, near the end of my junior year, I attended a family function at my aunt and uncles house. A number of my siblings and cousins had piled onto their trampoline, and eventually a bracket in the underside of the trampoline failed. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but my uncle, who worked for Elliot Group, mentioned that a simple finite element model should have been able to identify the design deficiency. At the time, I didn t even know what finite element analysis was, so I did some research when I got home. What I found was a field that exactly suited my interests in applied mathematics and engineering mechanics. Since then, I have taken every opportunity possible to expand my knowledge of computational mechanics, and I hope to further that effort at the University of Illinois. My academic experience began freshman year of college, when I took a course on computational methods in engineering. As it was an honors course, the curriculum was extremely aggressive. We covered basic programming in both C++ and MATLAB, a number of numerical methods, and how to write strong technical papers. Since then, I have taken more advanced courses, but this one had the greatest effect on me because it impressed upon me the vast potential of computation methods. A Plant Based Diet as a Prescriptive Measure: Should Health Care Providers Recommend A Vegan Diet to High Risk Patients For the Prevention or Treatment of Non Communicable or Chronic Diseases? David Arthur, MS, PA S The term non communicable disease refers to set of chronic, slowly progressing, long duration illnesses that are not infectious and are responsible for more deaths globally than any other cause.1 In 2011, in most high and middle income countries, non communicable diseases were responsible for more deaths than all other causes combined.1 These same chronic diseases are also referred to as lifestyle diseases by some practitioners, as they are recognized as having lifestyle choice as primary risk factors, and possibly, treatment modalities centered around lifestyle modification.2 The four primary non communicable diseases, as identified by the World Health Organization, are cardiovascular disease, malignant neoplasm, respiratory disease, and diabetes mellitus.3 The power of lifestyle choices to effectively address some of the most vexing chronic diseases of our time is well established.4 Adherence to four healthy lifestyle tenets not smoking, not being obese, getting at least thirty minutes of moderate activity per day, and eating a diet consisting primarily of vegetables, fruit, and whole grains, may have the net effect of addressing the primary sources of disease and death in western society.4 Strictly adhering to each of these healthy lifestyle choices ... I challenge that many of Hayek s assumptions are still valid today even though his book was written in 1944. Hayek s assumptions regarding 1) the government s rule of the law, 2) the concept of government directed economic activity that includes artificial separation of economics and politics, and 3) the notion that the unscrupulous and uninhibited are likely to be more successful, are still true in today. Perhaps this is the reason why in matters of Philosophical research some claim to have discovered the truth, while others declare that finding it is an impossibility, and other are still seeking it (SE Handout 31). The word truth in this quote is ambiguous. I believe that we will spend the rest of eternity seeking the truth. The truth can mean many things to many different people. What is true for you may not be true for me. Many of the modern philosophers dance around the question, What is real and what is not? Although there are many arguments for and against the internal world and the external world, I tend to lead towards the skeptics point of view. I do this on the simple notion that many of the skeptics arguments are hard to refute. Much like Sextus Empiricus, I argue that we cannot know anything with absolute certainty about the external world. Those who say that Sceptic deny appearances seem to me to be ignorant of what we say (SE Handout 38). Sextus Empricus does not deny appearances, he just is aware that we might not know for certain anything about the external world. Sextus Empiricus infers, honey appears to use to have a sweetening quality. This much we can concede, because it affects us with a sensation of sweetness. His story reflects the lives of those who might have lived there at the time. Eggleston narrates the book from a point of view that closely reflects what life would have been like in rural Indiana, where he includes facts about the community and its members, as well as what it was like to be a student and a teacher in the 19th century. Flat Creek offers all examples of the experiences of a not only a teacher, but a teacher who has moved to a small unknown community. It also offers a perspective students and community members would have on schooling, and its value. I argue that due to the limited resources, the community s involvement, and geographical location, students were unable to receive a well rounded educationin a rural community during the 19th century. I will use the book and class materials to support my argument that there were limited resources, lower quality of life, high teacher turnover, and limited opportunities for female and minority students (lack thereof). Limited resources were available in rural communities during the 19th and early 20th century. The book has several examples that illustrate the limited resources Flat Creek, or a similar community, might have had during that time. • 32. Corn Ethanol Controversy And The Chemical Formula Of Ethanol Corn Ethanol Controversy! Ethanol (CH3CH2OH) is a clear, colorless liquid. It is also known as ethyl alcohol, EtOH, and grain alcohol. Ethanol is widely produced by processing grains such as corn or starch and sugar crops. The grain is first milled, then fermented with yeast and different enzymes to turn the grain s starches into alcohol(EPA). A distillation process then increases the ethanolconcentrations, basically the same process a whiskey maker would use to make whiskey. Of course, law mandates that a denaturant is added, making the liquid unsafe for drinking. In the process, waste grain is produced and sold as farm animal feed. Bioethanol, can be made from many types of trees and grasses, but the procedure is much harder. The chemical formula of ethanol is the same whether it is made from starch and sugar based feedstocks, such as corn grain (widely used in United States), sugar cane (Brazil), or from cellulosic feedstocks (such as wood chips or crop residues). (The Alternative Fuels Data Center) In the United States, ethanol is primarily used as a blending element in the production of gas and as an alternative fuel. • 34. The Issue Of Political Participation Political participation is a right afforded to United States citizens; it is our civic duty to participate and is ultimately a privilege. The founders believed that it was the newly founded government s responsibility to protect the basic rights of the people. With those beliefs they made the United States of America, a two tiered, three branch democracyand therefore the people hold the power to freely elect who they want to represent them in government. The local representatives, we elect push for laws of interest to the majority and provide them with the resources that they need. The president implements and enforces laws that Congress passes. With such social ramifications and power granted to government representatives it would seem as though nearly everyone should be invested in political matters and actively engaged in political participation. Among the easiest ways to get involved politically is through the votingprocess and elections, others are symbolic participation, civil society participation, protesting, marching, contacting public officials, being part of electioncampaigns and even running for office. While voting is among the easiest ways to be a part of this democracy, the turnout is low. The right to vote has opened up to a larger number of people through legislation, but still the turnout rate is low. There are factors that show a correlation in the chance of whether or not one will vote, and are very telling in some instances. Voting in the United ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In 1949, the People s Republic of Chinawould replace the ROC. Though both were revolutions, there were significant factors that differentiated the two. For us to compare and contrast the two, we should understand the causes and leaders of each respective revolution. Post Korean War Relations and the Rise of the People s Republic of China The Korean War was able to develop the People s Republic of China as a major up and coming nation. The mid 1950s saw the rise of Chinese agricultural collectivization, making them an influential power in the world. With the country improving every year that passes, Mao wanted to move in the direction of Socialism, but was worried that those in the CCP were restricting him on making that leap. In a statement in 1957, Mao claimed that the Imperialist nations, like the United States, are more afraid of Socialist nations than the other way around (p.198). Mao shows how the transition into Socialism has created increased tension between Sino Soviet relations. He states, At present there exists some controversies between Chine and the Soviet Union. Their ways of thinking, behavior, and historical traditions differ from ours (p.198). This was the first public statement made by the Chinese that distanced themselves away from Soviet authority. This is the point that Rachel Carson argues throughout her book Silent Spring. Carson believes that though the scientific revolutions that occurred since the turn of the 19th century may seem to be solely beneficial, they have disastrous repercussions. In particular, Carson claims that man s newly established ability to have dominion over natureputs the world in a dangerous position. If humans let the power of controlling nature get to their head and refuse to attempt to understand the possible consequences of their actions, the Earth is destined to turn into a contaminated wasteland. During this stage, a healthy sucker is chosen when it is about four months of age. The healthy and young sucker is selected because they have higher rate differentiation, which helps them to grow rapidly. Then, the outer tissue and the root of the sucker is pared away until the size of meristem tissue is suitable to the size of petri dish, which is about 1.0 to 2.0 cm diameter (Singh et al., 2011). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another indication of Stella s dependence in Stanley is when she claimed that she can t stand when he (Stanley) is away for a night ... I cry on his lap like a baby. Although this highlights that Stella is highly dependent on Stanley, we cannot ignore the fact that she loves him too. Similar to Stanley Kowalski, the protagonist of The Wasp Factory, Frank Cauldhame also behaves violently; however in Frank s case violence is directed mostly towards animals as he is aware of his superiority to them, just as Stanley is aware he is superior to his wife. The reader follows account of how Frank fills his long, solitary summer victimising animals such as rabbits, as well as killing wasps on a daily basis. Frank s annihilation of rabbits on the island is a crucial example of how violence is a conventional part of his life as if he s accepted that killing and deliberately hurting things will always be normal to him. Frank throttled the rabbit, swinging it in front of him ... its neck held on the thin black line of rubber tubing . It is highly disturbing how a 16 year old is comfortable in inflicting pain on innocent creatures, not to mention killing them as well as finding it rather amusing, as he claims I felt good after his genocidal of the rabbits. Moreover, Frank does not undergo any remorse after he has committed these harsh doings, because after he killed a cute little bunny he kicked it into the water. Despite Stanley ... Safety for Women Safety Issues for Women Traveling Solo Stay Safe But Don t Stay Home By Zahara Heckscher Zaraha Heckscher(left) with a Musonda friend in Zambia from Safety Issues for Women Traveling Solo: Stay Safe But Don t Stay Home. Women are frequently warned about independent international travel. Unfortunately, it is true that women are much more likely than men to be the victims of sexual harassment and sexual assault. In virtually every country I have visited I heard from female travelers and volunteers who had been subjected to frequent come ons, unwanted touching, or inappropriate comments, in the words of one Peace Corps volunteer. Harassment and assault range from verbal harassment, to crude propositions, to groping (especially by men in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (In India, a toe ring on your second toe means you re not available.) Many volunteers learn strategies from local women. In Mexico, for example, women often sit together, even if they don t know each other. Other tips, in the words of previous travelers, include: Be careful about letting your guard down while on vacation. Travel with a group at night. Before you leave home, talk to other women who have traveled in the countries you plan to visit. The in country program director cautioned us against looking or staring at the men for too long at a time; this could be misinterpreted since the women in the local villages were taught not to make eye contact with the men. Be ready to give up some freedoms that you are used to at home. Females must take care with their dealings with any male older than 14 and younger than 75. I was often misunderstood at first and didn t realize that plain speaking and looking at a man directly when speaking to him could be misinterpreted as flirting. I learned quickly to be very formal and to always involve several people in any conversation. Don t be afraid to ask about the security situation where you are posted and find out about any prior incidents that may have occurred in the area. When it comes to your life, you can t be too cautious. No matter what you do or don t do, remember that it is not your fault if you are assaulted. If you are raped or assaulted, it is most ... Reflection On Issues And Ethics Issues and Ethics: Reflection Paper Assignment Fareeha Ikram Ethical Dilemma: 1.You are working with a man who has a history of suicide attempts and has been hospitalized on more than one occasion. He tells you that he has found it very hard to get help in the past, because whenever he tells a counselor he is feeling suicidal they immediately call for help and he is hospitalized. He tells you that at those times he really just needs someone to talk to and wishes he could find a counselor he could confide in when he is feeling suicidal who would not call an ambulance and seek psychiatric help for him. He is a very high risk for suicide given his past attempts and frequent thoughts that include a detailed plan. He tells you that he wants to tell you something but is worried about how you will react. He wonders if he can tell you and if you can promise that you will just help him and not involve emergency services, if you cannot make that promise he will not tell you. Part A 1.Step One: Identify the problem The presenting problem is that as the counselor to a man with a history of suicide attempts and hospitalization, I m in a situation where he has asked me to promise to not report any information he confides in me to emergency services. The major participant in this situation is the man as his life and safety are at risk, given his troubling history, and as the counselor, it is my responsibility to help and support him. Therefore, I must use this 8 step ethical decision making model to decide the best course of action to solve this ethical dilemma. 2.Step Two: Identify the potential issues involved The issues involved are ethical and legal. First of all, choosing to remain quite in this situation can be a form of enabling, but it will respect the client s promise. But, if I were to report this to emergency services, I would be violating the client s confidentiality and his trust. This is a moral and ethical issue. This issue is also legal in nature because while counselors must maintain confidentiality, as per certain provincial and territorial laws, there is a duty to protect/warn/inform in case of imminent danger to the client, even when it is inflicted by one s own self. My Passion For Music And The Music Industry I have always had a passion for music and the music industry, and my parents and I both knew that I was not going for school, unless it was for something music related. The music industry is such a broad category and there are so many moving parts within this sector. I chose music promotion for my career project, because it would allow me to go in and out of different departments within the musicindustry, along being able to work alongside creative individuals for artists. Pursuing a career in music promotion would allow me to have my cake and eat it too, so to speak. Music has not only been my passion, but by main focus for at least the past ten years. I was always attracted to sound and music from as young as I could remember. I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This industry, and a career in music promotion is all about networking, ambition, a tenacious attitude and a passion for your work. Unlike many other professions, the daily workload is not a fixed amount or even a fixed measure of time. There may be day where you are working from sun up to sun down, meeting other record executives or members, making phone calls left and right, or on the road traveling to your next event. But then, there might be some moments when your job is to solely make sure the artists you are managing are getting to their venues on time and meeting all the appropriate industry people. Although all of this can seem quiet fast pace and a bit chaotic, one of the many benefits of this career is the expectation that the artists you are promoting have of you. What do I mean by that? The artists actually expect you to hang out with them for the night after a big show, or even right before shows. These artists are always down to party, and they need a crew to have fun with, and as a music promoter, you are a part of this crew! There are not many other industries with this same expectation. Like I mentioned earlier, a career in music promotion does not require a specific degree or level of certification, but that does ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
