MY EXPERIENCE AT MARIANO MORENO SCHOOL
The end of this year come to an end and I would like that to tell you that the
experience I lived this year at school was amazing. I had many doubts about teaching, but
now I’m really sure that my decision of studying to become a teacher is the right choice. I’m
glad of having a subject like this in which you learn a lot about students behaviour and
attitudes.
I love children, but I love most to teach them. What full me of joy giving classes to
young learners was their care towards me and their enthusiasm to learn and have fun at the
same time. Also, they were always making jokes and they were so curious that they wanted
to know our whole life in the lesson. The atmosphere in children’s classroom was always
lively and friendly that made me feel at home. It was great!
My favourite lesson during my practicum was the one that Estela observed in which
children learnt the verb LIKE in the positive and negative
form and they also played a game in the playground. It was
grateful to see students using the structures and forming
sentences while playing and having fun. They really
enjoyed that lesson and it was unforgettable for me and I’m
pretty sure that for them too.
In all the lessons I was friendly with students and
tried to care about all of them. Also, now, I learnt to give
importance to nominalization. To be honest, it was very
difficult for me to remember the names but I made my effort
and I understood that knowing student’s name was
essential because they got involved quickly and they
realized that I took care about them.
As regards my teacher’s stance, with this
experience, I believe I have learnt a lot and I’m sure that
teaching at school will not really be a job but a moment of
enjoyment in each day of my life.
I believe that the most challenging moment was one
class in which a student, Santiago, started to cry and hit the
table. He suffers from Asperger Syndrome and he is not able
to communicate his feeling. That class, he felt sad because
his peers asked us to stick flashcards on the board but he
didn’t so he felt miserable. I told him to come to the board but
he refused, so her special teacher took him out of the
classroom and I couldn't talk to him.I didn’t know what to do
but after that situation, I began to pay special attention to
Santi, calling him by his name, making him participate and
going to his chair asking him if he had understood or needed
something. I can confirm that the relationship between us got
better. And here I have the evidence of the last day at
school... (He asked me to take a picture, “Pero nosotros solos
seño”).
As I said before, I really enjoyed this subject because I
learnt many aspects about teaching that are not written in any
book but that are rather acquired through experience. I felt accompanied during my
practicum by the teacher, their teacher assistants, by our
mentor teacher: Joa, and by Pao, my pedagogical partner.
Without their advices and help, this experience would be
much more difficult. I’m not telling that it was easy, but
with their help, our daily effort was enjoyable.
To sum up, I will say that our country needs
teachers full of desire to share knowledge with students,
teachers who care about their students and teachers full
of energy, enthusiasm and good vibes. To do that, it is
necessary to create authentic materials so that students
can connect the language with reality, enjoy the lessons
and create a cosy atmosphere. Also, progressive
education needs to be fostered, so students can make
connections between the foreign language and their
everyday life.
