How did the students react to your teaching, to the activities and the materials?
How did they react to the lesson?
The students react perfectly to the lesson, as expected. They were really anxious to learn
some words and expressions so they were almost jumping on their chairs. They were really
participative and talkative, yet they were expecting a translation every time they wanted to
say something or I said something. So I had to calm them down and tell them to be patient
and to get the meaning across throughout the lesson.
Choose a moment that was important for you during the lesson. Describe it and
say why it was important.
It was really important for me that the students were really participative. I was a bit worried
that they did not want to talk as they may be afraid or insecure. It was their first encounter
with the language in a formal way, yet they were really energetic and demanding. They
forced me to keep up the rhythm for them not to get bored and disruptive, they were at
school from 8 am until the end of my class.
Describe this lesson in terms of a metaphor.
The lesson was like playing Pictionary. The students keep on guessing what I meant every
time I put something on the screen, saying what they saw and expecting a translation or a
sign of approval. I made expressions to help them with meaning and show them many
images for them to relate the content of the lesson, it was like playing that game as they
keep saying words related to the topic.
Comentado [Cecilia Z1]: They need to get used to a
different teaching style. Make sure you lower their
anxiety level every time you consider it necessary.

Lesson number: 2
Choose a moment that was important for the students during the lesson. Describe
it and say why it was important.
I believe that they are understanding how communication really works. They ask me a lot of
things in Spanish as they do not know how to do it in English, yet, but my answers are in
English but assisted by exaggerated gestures and expressions. If they ask the time, I look at
my wrist, and help them with my fingers, if they ask me to go to the toilet, I tell them to do it
as I point to the door. They understand what I say really quickly and without further
problems. I mention this, because it was one of their concerns before starting with the series
of lessons, yet they have cope with it quite successfully.
Choose a quotation that represents an event, knowledge, insight in this lesson.
“My plate does not look like the picture, at all” the student was really surprised about the
information he was discovering about proportions. This proves how interesting the
lesson have become for them. They are not only learning English but also relevant and
useful information for their daily life beyond the language.
What aspects of the lesson do you consider successful?
I think that giving the students the possibility to reflect on their habits turned out to be really
interesting for them. People do not often think about whether they have a healthy lifestyle or
not especially when they are children. So creating a space to wonder and think about habits
and routines that they take for granted; discovering that they may change some small things
to their routines and achieve big changes, it’s really rewarding. Moreover, they look
interested and they are also eager to participate to tell the rest what they usually eat and
drink so the lesson becomes really dynamic and entertaining.

Comentado [Cecilia Z5]: Excellent!A necessary goal in
EFL contexts.
Comentado [Cecilia Z6]: Apart from that, you are
encouraging them to develop their critical thinking.

What aspects of the lesson require change / improvement?
I find it quite hard to react or act upon misbehaviour in English, my students look at each
other and rely on the fact that they do not understand me in order to avoid acknowledging
their responsibility. I know they can understand me by paying attention to my face, my
gestures and tone of voice, yet they do not take it as serious as it is. Later, after the class, I
spoke with them and told them what I had to tell them about their behaviour, they understood
it and promised not to do it again. Nevertheless, I know they use the fact that they are not
used to English as an excuse to avoid responsibility on their actions.
Choose a moment that was important for you during the lesson. Describe it and
say why it was important.
I believe that attention and patience are aspects that I have to value from my students.
Despite some disruptive behaviour, they are eager to participate and perform the activities I
offer them. They are tired, some of them go to their home and come back just to have a
lesson with me, and they even stay after hour if we start the lesson late yet they are really
nice and enthusiastic, and I think they are accepting me; they told me some of their codes to
call other teachers, really funny. I feel really well among them.
Choose a quotation that represents an event, knowledge, insight in this lesson.
One of the students ask for the time, in English of course, and I told her what time it was,
reacted with great scepticism. She could not believe the time it was, so she ask other
students to check, she says. “Really? It’s almost time? it was so fast”. The director looked at
me incredulous, surprised but pleased. This shows how variety in lessons presentation plays
a paramount role for primary students; they enjoyed a change in routine, compared with
regular lessons in their school daily routine. Time flew as they were having fun, maybe not
due to the language but to the change in their routine.

material on classroom management.

What pedagogical principles supported the planning and delivery of this lesson?
I tried to immerse them into language use along the lessons. I deliver the lesson into the
target language trying to show them the purpose behind it. That is to say express
themselves with the language; in this case express their routine. I believe they did not
understand the reason for me to deliver the lesson in English until they actually perceived
they do not have many chances to be exposed to it, we discussed this after the lesson
ended. They began to answer in the target language without asking for translation or without
translating in order to check meaning; they told me what they wanted to tell me.
Choose a moment that was important for you during the lesson. Describe it and
say why it was important.
They are eager to participate, they are enthusiastic and motivated along the lessons. It is
important for me and it is also important for the director who is with me in class, she always
tells me how surprised she is on the students’ work, behaviour and commitment to cope with
every lesson after a long day of activities. It was important to see how some students are
starting to be more participative and cooperative with each other; they shared material, they
helped each other and started to talk to me in front of their partners, at loud. I am really
thankful for their performances and for their patience and commitment.
Describe this lesson in terms of a metaphor.
It was like a workshop, a real workshop, like the ones we always want to have in our
classrooms but not very often achieve; because they do not like each other, they do not like
to participate or they are just shy. They shared, cooperated, helped, collaborated and
enjoyed constructing knowledge together.
