Borobudur is the largest Buddhist temple in the world, located in Indonesia. It was built in the 9th century under the Sailendra dynasty and features over 500 Buddha statues and 1460 relief panels depicting Buddhist teachings. The temple is constructed in 10 terraces symbolizing the stages of enlightenment. Reliefs around the temple illustrate stories from Hindu epics and daily life at the time. While Borobudur was an important pilgrimage site, it was abandoned and covered by volcanic ash for centuries before being rediscovered in the 19th century. It remains an important center of Buddhism and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
