I conducteda surveytotry and ask whatkeyfactors standout withinthe mysterygenre andhow I
coulduse thisprimaryresearchto influencemyproductiontoappeal toa wideraudience.The
surveywhichwasconductedonline attractedalotof attention withatotal of 52 answersthough
unfortunatelyformyresultssome of the answerswere skipped whichmakesthe resultsunfair,this
meansmyresultswill notbe to the standardthat I am expecting.However,Iwill use the resultsI
have receivedinordertoanalyse the mysterygenre expectations.
The firstquestionIaskedwaswhat the participantgenderwasandI had a clear majorityof male
answerswith37 (71.15%) malesandonly15 (28.85%) femalesrespondingtomysurvey,thisdoes
showme that my surveywill be verymale biaswhichmayaffectmyresultsthoughthiscouldbe due
to the fact that the mysterygenre appealsmore tothe male populationthanthe femalepopulation
thoughit ishard to specifysaywitha low respondentcount.
The nextquestionwhichIaskedaboutage gave me a unsuspectedresponse asIreceived47
answers(90.38%) onone response,thatbeingthe age range of 16 to 25 and I onlyreceived5
(9.62%) responsesonanotheranswer.Thisalsosuggeststhatthere isaheavybiason age as well as
genderwhichcouldinfluence the responsesIreceive andtherefore impactmyfinal production,
thoughthismeanswiththe responsesIhave,ithasgivenme a clear targetaudience since the
responsessuggestthatmalesaroundthe age of 16 to 25 are more interestedthananyotherage
groupor gender.
I thenwentonto ask the participantsonwhat theirfavourite mysteryfilmwas,withthisquestionI
wouldhave beenable toallowthe topscoringresultsinfluencemyproductionintosomethingmore
professionalwhichwouldstandout.Thoughunfortunatelyformyresults,Ihadan unevenresponse
numberdue to someone skippingthe questionthoughthisdidnotsignificantlyimpactmyresponses
as there wasa filmthatstoodout incomparison. Inception,whichscored14 responses(27.45%)
had double thanthe previousresultSe7en whichonlyhad7 responses,Ialsodidallow my
participantstogive theirownoptionswhichdidworkoutinfavourthoughthere were a few
responseswhichweren’t whatIwaslookingfor.
The nextquestionIaskedwasaboutthe codesandconventionsandwhatviewerswouldexpectto
see ina filmunderthe mysterygenre.Thisquestionwasamultiple choice stylequestionwhich
meansitallowedmyparticipantstoanswermore thanonce,I thoughtthiswouldbe a goodway to
benefitmyresultsinsteadof justrelyingonone response fromone respondentandfortunatelyfor
my resultsnoone didskipthisquestion.The topscoringanswer,tense music,wasthe one response
I was expectingtoscore the highestwithatotal response of 38 (73.08%) selectingthisresponse and
surprisinglycliff hangercame secondwith31responses(59.62%.) ThoughCliff hangersare quite
commonwithinthe mysterygenre,Iwasnotexpectingittoscore as highas it did;fortunatelyfor
me these responses are goingtoinfluence the productionof myshortfilm.
My questioniswhenthe responsesturnedunsuccessfulinmyopinion,Iaskedmyrespondentson
whatwouldyouexpectthe targetaudience tobe on a mysteryfilmandinorderto get the mostout
of the responsesIturnedontextresponse whichIhopedwouldimprove the qualityof my
responses.One keyresponse Ireceivedwhichwashelpful was“Kidstend to havemystery filmswith
a lot of high key lighting,thingslike Scooby doo orHarriet the spy.Moreadult farelike GoneGirl or
Se7en haslow key lighting and hasa moreserioustone.” Withthisanswer,theywere able to
describe andpickan example forbothayoungerand olderaudience whichhelpsforwhenIam
choosingmythemesformyproductionsoif I am targetingforan olderaudience thenIcantake
influencefrom filmswhichalsotargetsamore mature audience.
My final questionaskedmyrespondentswhetherornota mystery shortfilmcouldbe successful,
and I washappywiththe resultsIhadreceiveddue tothe responsesbeingmostlypositiveanditis
whatI was expecting.Iwasnotgoingto expectthe majorityof the answerstobe Yes because
audiencescan’tcompletelybe sure if the filmisgoingtobe successful until the releaseof the film,
so the answer“Maybe,if approachedcurrently” inmy opinionwouldbe the bestanswer.

I conducteda surveytotry and ask whatkeyfactors standout withinthe mysterygenre andhow I coulduse thisprimaryresearchto influencemyproductiontoappeal toa wideraudience.The surveywhichwasconductedonline attractedalotof attention withatotal of 52 answersthough unfortunatelyformyresultssome of the answerswere skipped whichmakesthe resultsunfair,this meansmyresultswill notbe to the standardthat I am expecting.However,Iwill use the resultsI have receivedinordertoanalyse the mysterygenre expectations. The firstquestionIaskedwaswhat the participantgenderwasandI had a clear majorityof male answerswith37 (71.15%) malesandonly15 (28.85%) femalesrespondingtomysurvey,thisdoes showme that my surveywill be verymale biaswhichmayaffectmyresultsthoughthiscouldbe due to the fact that the mysterygenre appealsmore tothe male populationthanthe femalepopulation thoughit ishard to specifysaywitha low respondentcount.

The nextquestionwhichIaskedaboutage gave me a unsuspectedresponse asIreceived47 answers(90.38%) onone response,thatbeingthe age range of 16 to 25 and I onlyreceived5 (9.62%) responsesonanotheranswer.Thisalsosuggeststhatthere isaheavybiason age as well as genderwhichcouldinfluence the responsesIreceive andtherefore impactmyfinal production, thoughthismeanswiththe responsesIhave,ithasgivenme a clear targetaudience since the responsessuggestthatmalesaroundthe age of 16 to 25 are more interestedthananyotherage groupor gender.

I thenwentonto ask the participantsonwhat theirfavourite mysteryfilmwas,withthisquestionI wouldhave beenable toallowthe topscoringresultsinfluencemyproductionintosomethingmore professionalwhichwouldstandout.Thoughunfortunatelyformyresults,Ihadan unevenresponse numberdue to someone skippingthe questionthoughthisdidnotsignificantlyimpactmyresponses as there wasa filmthatstoodout incomparison. Inception,whichscored14 responses(27.45%) had double thanthe previousresultSe7en whichonlyhad7 responses,Ialsodidallow my participantstogive theirownoptionswhichdidworkoutinfavourthoughthere were a few responseswhichweren’t whatIwaslookingfor.

ThoughCliff hangersare quite commonwithinthe mysterygenre,Iwasnotexpectingittoscore as highas it did;fortunatelyfor me these responses are goingtoinfluence the productionof myshortfilm. My questioniswhenthe responsesturnedunsuccessfulinmyopinion,Iaskedmyrespondentson whatwouldyouexpectthe targetaudience tobe on a mysteryfilmandinorderto get the mostout of the responsesIturnedontextresponse whichIhopedwouldimprove the qualityof my responses.One keyresponse Ireceivedwhichwashelpful was“Kidstend to havemystery filmswith a lot of high key lighting,thingslike Scooby doo orHarriet the spy.Moreadult farelike GoneGirl or Se7en haslow key lighting and hasa moreserioustone.” Withthisanswer,theywere able to

My final questionaskedmyrespondentswhetherornota mystery shortfilmcouldbe successful, and I washappywiththe resultsIhadreceiveddue tothe responsesbeingmostlypositiveanditis whatI was expecting.Iwasnotgoingto expectthe majorityof the answerstobe Yes because audiencescan’tcompletelybe sure if the filmisgoingtobe successful until the releaseof the film, so the answer“Maybe,if approachedcurrently” inmy opinionwouldbe the bestanswer.
