The document summarizes the results of a survey about listening habits and preferences for radio news. The respondent found that most listeners prefer to hear recent news stories over funny or serious stories. They also prefer to hear news about celebrities, politics, and weather forecasts. Listeners want theme music or jingles included and for the newscast to be kept under 2 minutes to avoid boredom. The respondent plans to incorporate these findings when creating their own radio newscast.

Respond to two original responses thoroughly in a manner that invites an extension of the conversation. In other words, “I totally agree with you” is NOT a sufficient response. Each peer response should be approximately 6 – 7 sentences, or a paragraph in length. Response needs strong structure and a logical flow. You don't need to answer the original questions.

Why do you think that talk radio is one of the most popular formats on radio? Do you listen to talk radio?
Should talk-radio hosts be able to say anything they want on the radio? Is it important to air all potential issues over the airwaves, even if those issues might upset some listeners?
Are radio talk shows just silly sideshows of extreme views and shocking behavior, or do they appeal to listeners in unique and significant ways?
Do all potential topics contribute to democracy? What kinds of things shouldn’t be said or discussed on the radio?
Student A's post
I think that talk radio is one of the most popular formats on the radio for a few reasons. One reason is because the only other popular option would be radio stations that play music, but nowadays why would someone choose to listen to the radio’s random selection of music when they could listen to their own playlists on Apple music or Spotify. Radio’s are being less and less used for actual music. Radio talk shows are great for the people who don’t necessarily like to listen to music on their drives, or prefer to listen to something more informative while they're in the car. This could be a number of different ages or people not necessarily "older people" but generally adults would prefer that over young adults who don’t view listening to music as a waste of time where some people might. Young adults usually view listening to music on their drives as more enjoyable rather than listening to someone talk on the radio.
I see both perspectives as to why talk radio show hosts should and should not be able to say anything they want on the radio. On the one hand, there’s freedom of speech which they should be able to do and additionally, having your own talk show should permit the host the privilege of being able to express their own opinion; if someone who listens disagrees they could switch the station they are listening to. However, being able to say really anything with no restrictions could be a risky thing to do depending on who’s listening. For instance, if a Father is driving his 6 year-old son to school and the Father is listening to a radio station where the talk show host uses vulgar language, if the Father was unaware of this or unable to stop it before his young impressionable child could hear, this is where it wouldn’t hurt for talk show hosts to have some guidelines. In this circumstance, radio talk show hosts having basic rules to abide by doesn’t seem like a bad idea in case they are speaking about a political topic for example where things could get heated quickly. That being said, I do .

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2. Question 1
42.86% of my respondents said
that they listen to radio news.
However 57.14% said that they
don’t. From this I can infer that
they probably listen to the radio
but they listen to music and not
the news. Using this information, I
can use it to make my radio news
broadcast more entertaining to
my target audience. I can do this
by adding theme music or an
enjoyable and memorable jingle
at the beginning and end of my
radio newscast.
3. Question 2
78.57% of my respondents said that they
listen to the news 0 – 2 times per week.
This is the majority of my respondents,
which conveys that making a radio
newscast would be successful. From this, I
need to find out what type of news grabs
their attention and what type of news
interests them. By using this data, I can see
that since the majority of my target
audience listen to the news 0 – 2 times a
week, they must be interested in recent
events and daily news broadcasts. My
radio newscast could be based on a
tragedy that has happened during the day.
This helps me get my target audience to
listen to my radio news broadcast.
4. Question 3
10 of my respondents said that they
listen to Capital FM whilst 8 said
they listen to BBC radio news, and 6
said they listen to LBC news.
From this I can infer that my
audience like music and news
together but some like formal news
from the BBC. These are the
majority of responses to this
question. I could combine these
responses together and add music /
theme song into my radio news
broadcast.
5. Question 4
My prediction from the Question 2 analysis
was right, as the majority of my respondents
said that they would listen to news about
recent events instead of a funny or serious
news story. However some of my audience
have said that they would rather listen to
something funny and others would listen to
something serious. I could combine all these
responses together and include it in my
radio news broadcast. I could do this by
including the most recent and serious event
that has happened at the beginning of my
radio newscast (headline and the news) and
the least serious/ kind of funny news story
could come last in my news headlines.
6. Question 5
64.29% of my respondents said that they would prefer
news about celebrities, 39.39% said they would prefer
news about politics and another 39.29% said that they
would prefer news about the weather forecast. In
formal news broadcasts such as the BBC radio news
station, they would not include news about celebrities.
Perhaps if something bad were to happen, but they
mainly include political headlines and end the news off
with the weather forecast of the upcoming week / the
next day.
From this analysis, I could include politics in my radio
newscast, such as David Cameron’s decision the resign
from being Prime Minister. I could also include the
weather forecast at the end of the newscast, because
that would be one of my own conventions that I believe
a radio newscast should require. Since the majority of
my target audience want celebrity news, I could include
it in my news broadcast too.
7. Question 6
39.29% of my target audience said that
they would not get bored if a newscast
was over 2 minutes. 35.71% said that they
would get bored if the newscast was over
2 minutes. The people who left their own
comments, said that it depends on the
news story and if it is interesting or not. If
it is interesting then they would keep on
listening but if it is boring then they will
stop listening.
From this, I know that I need to keep my
radio broadcast in a specific time frame
and make my new stories interesting so
that my target audience keep on listening
and don’t get bored.
8. Question 7
It is obvious from this analysis
that my target audience would
prefer to have theme music to
play at the beginning of the
radio newscast. I will include this
in my radio newscast by creating
my own jingle and inserting it at
the beginning and end of my
radio broadcast.
9. Question 8
My target audience is not stereotypical
in any way. All of my respondents said
that the news presenter can be either
male / female or both.
If I was to add a male anchor to my
radio news broadcast, then I would
either have to find a male that can act
as an anchor or I could edit the voice
on an editing software to make it
sound like a man is speaking instead of
a woman.
10. Question 9
A majority of my respondents said they
would prefer music in broadcast. This
could be because a majority of them
said that they listen to Capital FM. I
could input music into the background
if we interview someone in a different
location, but other than that, I could
stick to the theme music to my radio
newscast only.
11. Question 10
The majority of my respondents said
that they think the voice of the
presenter attracts them to the radio
station. Others said that the theme
music attracts them and some said
that the content itself would
automatically attract them to listen to
the radio news. From this analysis, I
know that I will definitely have to use
the sound of voice in my radio news
broadcast and that the voice must be
“monotone free”. The presenter must
have emotion whilst they talk.
