Besides being compassionate my mother is thoughtful. She stays at work late if someone needs help
with theirs. She brings my grandmother dinner and runs errands for her. She is always putting others
before herself. For instance, last year I began singing in the choir at Iowa State. It was really
important to me because singing has always been a passion of mine. She drove to Ames for every
single concert. It meant a lot to me to have her in the audience supporting me. This year I also
started singing in the choir at my church. I was really excited and nervous about singing the first

Usually in my life I will experience a few negative emotions and thoughts and then briefly affirm
that what I am believing is untrue and then switch my mind to something different. I also have
journals that I will write in every once in a while, but it isn't something I use for overcoming
negative emotions. Coming from a conservative, religious family I have always heard that
meditation is bad. While Neff practices Buddhist meditation and uses some of these ideas in her
programs to teach self–compassion, after listening to one of the meditation podcasts, I can see the
benefit. The meditation practices she developed helps one relax, become more self–aware, and
focused on thoughts of love and compassion not only towards oneself but also towards others.
Another aspect that I had not taken into consideration is the difference between self–compassion and
self–esteem. As Neff explains, self–esteem is basically one's perceived value and worth; however, it
is contingent on how one is compared to another. I have never looked at self–esteem being a
problematic, negative term, now I understand the aspects of it that can be detrimental to ones well–
being. Always striving to have high self–esteem leads us to put other people down in the process, it
also insinuates that we have to be perfect and better to be worthy, which is the opposite of what
Neff's concept of self–compassion entails. Our society thrives on the idea that one has to be better
than their counterpart, what we lack is this idea of self–compassion. Therefore, I think it would be
very beneficial to teach self–compassion in children; this may lead to an overall more
compassionate generation that flourishes on how we can help each other and ourselves

Barbara Ascher's On Compassion
Compassion, though seemingly straight–forward, is actually a complex beast, springing from a
variety of sources, including some less than flattering ones. These sources can include pity, fear, and
self advancement, which are rarely associated with something as "good" as being compassionate.
However, in "On Compassion", by Barbara Ascher argues that compassion is something that must
be learned through experience, not something one is born knowing, by giving examples of the
actions of those who have enough towards those who do not, in order to stress the importance of
taking note of others and their situations. Often, people try to avoid those who are less fortunate.
People have a tendency to "look away" from those who have fallen on hard times, as though they are
not even there (Para. 2). People tend to look away from things that disgust them, pretending they do
not exist, and move on with their lives. In the case of the less fortunate, they do so to protect their

My Sister, My Heroine "Buck up Buttercup," (Wood). Something I have been told my whole life,
and have recently learned to appreciate. My sister, Tanya Jai Peterson Wood, has said to me to
"Buck up Buttercup" many times under a vast variety of circumstances, to the point where I say it to
others, and think it even when TJ is not around. TJ has made the biggest difference in my life, and is
my heroine. I chose TJ to be my heroine because she is the most real to me; she has most changed

Marigolds Short Story
At a young age, children do not understand the importance of having compassion as for they hold
innocence within themselves. Growing up and maturing into an adult, children begin to
progressively lose their innocence as they become more of a compassionate person because one can
not have both innocence and compassion simultaneously. In fact, a coming of age short story called
"Marigolds" written by Eugenia Collier, tells about a young girl named Lizabeth who grows up to
become a compassionate person. For the most part, Lizabeth tells her childhood experience in a
flashback on how she mostly remembers Miss Lottie's marigolds. Ultimately, Lizabeth decides to
destroy Miss Lottie's marigolds out of anger because she hears about her parent's economic
struggles. Shortly after Lizabeth realizes what she had done, she realizes the meaning of why Miss
Lottie plants the marigolds. Throughout the short story, "Marigolds," the characterization of
Lizabeth helps develop the author's argument that one can not have both compassion and innocence.
The three events that show this is, when Lizabeth hesitates before throwing the rocks at the
marigolds, hearing the sounds of her father's sorrowful cries, and eliminating Miss Lottie's
marigolds. Collier's argument in "Marigolds" was that one cannot have both compassion and
innocence and this is revealed through the event where Lizabeth decides to throw rocks at the

Famed American author David Foster Wallace gave a commencement speech to Kenyon College's
graduating class of 2005. Most commencement speeches focus on graduates' accomplishments as
well as give general life advice. Wallace's presentation follows this pattern at first, congratulating
the students on getting their diplomas. However, most of his speech is dedicated to the idea of
thinking beyond ourselves. Throughout the speech, Wallace argues we should live with empathy
through his use of humor and appeals to the audience's empathy. The introduction quickly
introduces the humorous tone found throughout the piece with his use of anecdotes. In the opening
anecdote, two young fish fail to recognize that they are surrounded by water. By juxtaposing the
academic setting with the fish exclaiming "what the hell is water?" the speaker creates humor with
the fish's unexpected colloquialism. Furthermore, Wallace connects the irony of the fish anecdote
with the that of most adults, who are unable to see what really matters in life just as the fish can not
see the water that encompasses them. The speaker follows this story with another about an atheist
and a theist arguing about the existence of God. By refusing to see the other's perspective, Wallace
shows the humor in their rigid belief systems. The speaker also pokes fun at his liberal arts audience

Change is one of the most difficult things to do, it is always difficult to find what to change let alone
how to change. However, one of the key messages a writer can convey to an audience is human
compassion or empathy, to inspire action or change, and to bring about a deeper understanding of
the world. Both writer Upton Sinclair's fiction writing "The Jungle" and the non–fiction writing
"The Harvest Gypsies" by John Steinbeck inform the reader of the difficulties faced by immigrants
and migrant workers. However while the author of "The Jungle", Upton Sinclair, uses descriptive
details that show the plight of the immigrants, it is the deeper understanding of the difficulties faced
from the families in John Steinbeck's "The Harvest Gypsies" that are more efficacious in evoking

In 1906 Upton Sinclair worked side by side with immigrants in the meatpacking industry
endeavoring to reveal what genuinely goes on within the factory walls. While doing so, Upton
Sinclair uses details that evoke compassion while bringing out a deeper understanding of their
world. In the fictional writing The Jungle, the author Upton Sinclair uses details such as "ate as
much raw blood as food", "mile after mile" and describes the immigrant's journey as an endless vista

Finally the third hypothesis was that work drain and history of traumas would have a supportive
relationship with compassion fatigue and emotional self–awareness would have a negative
relationship with compassion fatigue. The third hypothesis is looking at feeling drained at work and
a person's own personal history of trauma would positively correlate with compassion fatigue and
that if a person had insight into their own emotional state that person would score lower on
compassion fatigue. The therapists sense of powerlessness (.32), work drain (.32), emotional self–

According to Killian (2008), the biggest factors to impact compassion satisfaction positively is an
individual's social support(.46), internal locus of control at work(.22) and negatively is work

A child holds innocence from a young age and does not understand the importance of having
compassion. As a child's innocence gradually fade away due to maturity, he or she transforms into a
compassionate person. In a coming of age short story, "Marigolds," Eugenia Collier writes about a

compassion, it makes your spirits rise and make your challenges more bearable. In the short story,
"Thank you, Ma'am" by Langston Hughes, Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, a woman whose
purse has been an attempted target by a boy, shows the theme of compassion with an overflowing
amount of it. The boy, Roger, learns throughout the story that compassion is very important, and his
true personality is revealed by some woman he doesn't even know. At the beginning of "Thank you,
Ma'am," we see how just how compassionate Mrs. Jones really is. The moment she meets Roger,
she tells the boy to wash his face. "Least I can do is wash your face. Are you hungry?" This might
not seem like a very compassionate thing to do at first, however, she doesn't even know the boy, yet
she has enough compassion to make sure he is clean. Then, she takes the boy inside of her house! In
addition, the boy, Roger asks, "You going to take me to jail?" But Mrs. Jones doesn't. Maybe she
sees that Roger is really a good boy inside, so she shows compassion to bring out his true kindness.
This makes me think that he was probably trying to steal because he had to. And when Mrs. Jones

About Adversity" which is written by David DeSteno who is a psychology professor at Northeastern
University. DeSteno's purpose is to convince the reader that experiencing hardship makes a person
sympathetic or unsympathetic depending on the case of hardship that person has experienced, and
being a compassionate does not occur by chance. DeSteno makes two primary claims: one is by
illustrating that if an individual has lived through unpleasant events, that person will be familiar with
