The document discusses open educational resources (OER), outlining their key benefits and challenges. The main benefits are that OER are inexpensive, have a broad scope of materials, are accessible, can be easily disseminated, and have flexible content. However, early OER efforts faced challenges such as poor monitoring, uncertainty around costs and licensing, and questions around copyright and modifying original content. Overall, OER present the opportunity for widespread, low-cost access to information and education.

Seminar: Plurilingual Pathways for IntegrationGwennan Higham
This document provides an overview of a seminar titled "New Plurilingual Pathways for Integration: Immigrants and Language Learning in the 21st Century". The seminar was held at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh and aimed to discuss opportunities and challenges for immigrants learning new languages. It also sought to examine how immigrant language learning may challenge current conceptions of integration, cohesion, and citizenship. The seminar aimed to foster collaborations and ideas around linguistic integration within and beyond the UK. It provided background on the presenters and an agenda that addressed themes like the experiences of new immigrant language learners and potential initiatives to facilitate a more comprehensive view of integration.
The Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre (TAEC) is an independent, non-profit museum dedicated to promoting the appreciation and preservation of cultural diversity in Lao PDR. Like most museums, TAEC maintains a collection of artefacts, curates exhibitions, and promotes scholarship and learning through research and outreach activities. However, TAEC is also a museum representing living cultures in a developing country context, and as such faces a unique set of challenges for which it has developed specific approaches.
In a country with low education levels and a lack of museum and non-traditional learning opportunities, simply drawing in Lao visitors and creating a meaningful experience for them requires creativity and active visitor management. TAEC has developed a range of activities for children visiting the museum and also conducts sessions in schools to broaden its reach. Attracting adults has remained more elusive. To facilitate the building of further cultural heritage resources in Laos, TAEC conducts capacity-building activities for government staff of museums, NGO workers, and tourism professionals.
TAEC’s most challenging but meaningful objective is to promote cultural pride and revitalisation within ethnic minority communities themselves. TAEC has explored approaches including an ethnic minority intern programme, collaborative exhibition development with villages, and an ethnic cultural festival. Recognising that rural ethnic communities are amongst Laos’ poorest populations, TAEC also runs a handicrafts development programme, generating income for over 600 artisans in 11 provinces of the country.
TAEC views all these approaches (and others) as part of its education and advocacy programmes, and crucial to the sustainability of the organisation, its mission, and cultural heritage management itself. The challenge is how to progress from simply educating local populations to understand and value the idea of cultural diversity, to adopting the task of fostering cultural diversity, and finally, to taking leadership in their own communities to tackle their specific cultural heritage issues through home-grown approaches.
Public libraries as the learning hub in the community. Strategy and practical...Jan Holmquist
Public libraries are about providing access to information for all citizens. They are also about giving the community members the best possibilities to transform that information into knowledge.
When we look at libraries not only as a place for cultural inspiration or a house full of information -but also as the learning hub in the community, we focus on different ways of connecting with the community and new ways of delivering library services. We also have a new approach to what skillset librarians need to make this happen.
In his talk, Jan will give practical examples from his work as a library director in Denmark and New Zealand. Examples of working with learning as a strategy and how that impacted the library services delivered and how libraries reached out to the community.
Mary Flanagan M. Ed., coordinates family learning work in Co. Clare since 2006 as part of LCETB literacy provision. She uses an interagency approach working with schools and organisations in the community. She has written and developed publications and published articles on family learning. Mary provides training at national level in the area of Family Learning/Literacy and lectures on both B. A. and Higher Certificate WIT Family Literacy Module. She is interested in reaching adults using innovative methods who are least likely to engage in education provision.
The document discusses the changing role of libraries in a digital world and proposes a vision for European library policy. It argues that libraries should (1) integrate services into citizens' daily lives, (2) develop services supporting societal goals like lifelong learning and inclusion, and (3) offer diverse programs relevant to all populations. Libraries are shifting from primarily providing access to information to delivering complex learning and community activities through both digital and physical spaces. E-inclusion is crucial to fighting social tensions, and libraries can help bridge the digital divide through ICT training programs.

The summary concludes with impressions of the Toronto Public Library Service and a focus on children's programming and learning at libraries visited.
New Horizons: How Libraries Create Smart Communities - For INFORUM 2018 in Pr...Jan Holmquist
Libraries are more important than ever. This is not the headline you see in news media these days. If there happens to be a library-related headline it often says that libraries are obsolete because of the technological development.
In a world where there is more information than ever before and where modern societies compete to get the attractive knowledge jobs librarians and libraries guide people towards digital literacy thereby empowering them as digital citizens and lifelong learners. Therefore libraries are strategically important for modern knowledge societies.
Aligning to the conference theme Different Perspectives, New Horizons Jan shares how a library strategy with a focus on learning lead to opening a library FabLab and what implications it has for supporting learning about new technology and creating new knowledge communities.
A library FabLab must have the focus on digital literacy, searching and evaluating information and actively supporting the creation of new knowledge just like the library does with more traditional media.
Jan also shares insights on European library advocacy from Public Libraries 2020 and the Library Advocacy Lab on how libraries change lives and he reveals the secret on how Public Libraries 2020 will be a driving force in creating a global knowledge school for forward-thinking librarians and why that is important.

The National Library of Israel ran a pilot project to digitize a collection of portraits and release them under an open license for use on Wikipedia. They hired a Wikipedian-in-residence and held editing events to encourage creating new articles using the images. Over 150 images were donated to Wikipedia and about 70 new articles were created, helping raise awareness of the library's collections while providing primary sources for Wikipedia articles. Issues around digitization speed and copyright clearance remain, but future plans include uploading more collections and ongoing collaboration with Wikimedia and educators.

There are several forms of indigenous language education programs in Canada. Core language programs teach an indigenous language for one class period per day, while immersion programs fully integrate the indigenous language into all classes. Language nests are preschool immersion programs conducted entirely in the indigenous language. Some schools, like the Akwesasne Freedom School, are fully immersed language schools that aim to incorporate indigenous language and culture into all aspects of education to reverse cultural assimilation and ensure language survival. Bilingual programs teach students to be fluent in both an indigenous language and English. Challenges to maintaining indigenous languages include a lack of community and financial support along with few remaining fluent speakers.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
