2. The Civil War, also known as the “War Between the
States’’, was a war fought from 1861 to 1865 in the United
States. Several southern slave states broke away and
formed the Confederate States of America (the
"Confederacy" or the "South"). The states that remained
were known as the "Union" or the "North". The war began
because of slavery in the southern states and it created a
division between the North and the South. After four years
of fighting, that left over 600,000 soldiers dead, much of the
South’s infrastructure was destroyed, the Confederacy
collapsed, slavery was abolished, and the process of
rebuilding the United States and rights to the freed slaves
began.
3. The Union Soldier - most of the Union soldiers were boys
between
the ages of 12 and 45, some were educated, worked in
factories and were farmers. As much as a quarter of the
army
were foreign men from Germany, Ireland, Canada and
England.
In 1863 the Union began to enlist black soldiers.
