It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2. In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media
products?
My front cover follows the conventions of a real magazine. I used most of the
usual conventions; I put in the date to show audience when it had been
published. A Masthead which is positioned top left of my cover. Cover lines
to show them what my magazine is about and that they want to read the
articles inside and draw attention to the magazine. I also included a barcode
in the bottom left and lastly one of my two models were looking directly at
the camera. However, I challenged some of the conventions as I used full
body pictures of my models whereas normally magazines use waist up
pictures, the barcode is in the wrong place and also I have made it way too
big.
My contents page was as well as I had hoped, I used 50% text and 50%
images. I did this because this is a normal convention of a magazine. I
should of put a lot more pages as I only did 10 pages overall. And I need to
have sections in my contents page.
3. How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
•
My magazine is aimed at lots of different social groupings and aims to
involve all of them in the magazine. The audience would be parents as
well as students therefore, as well as quiz’s and competitions. I included
different articles about revision sessions and key term dates in order to
appeal to parents. I added these so parents could push their children to
be able to go to important things at school and to revise for their subjects,
as well as have fun in school.
4. What kind of media institution (publisher) might
distribute your media product and why?
• The students will be making the magazines because it is
a public school and it wouldn’t need a professional
publisher to show what is going on in the school. A
public school doesn’t normally pay a professional
company to make a school newsletter because it will
show parents that the school is interactive and promote
the school in an encouraging way. If the students create
the magazine this will means they know how to promote
the magazine and attract students of their age group
5. Who would be the audience for your
media product?
I would have two different audiences for my magazine. The first would be
the students at the school. This is because I have included many things
inside my magazine that would appeal to them, for instance I have
included fun quizzes and a welcome pack from the head girl. As it is most
likely to be made by students they are going to want to buy their own
magazine and their friends are as well.
My magazine is also aimed at parents of the students that go to school.
This is because parents like to find out what is going on at the school their
child's school which is why I have included things like key term dates to
keep the parents involved in the school. Another reason may be if their
children are making the magazine their parents will most likely want to see
what the magazine.
6. How did you attract/address your
audience?
• My masthead is one of the things that will attract my audience as it
is in a bold font and is quite big. Also the main picture is there to
attract the audience as once they have seen the picture they will
want to find out who the models are and what we have written
about them. The models I have used are around the same age as
the students that will read the magazine so that will attract the
students.
• I have put two different cover lines on my magazine which have
dramatic story's to draw the attention of the reader.
• Lastly I have put a puff telling my readers about a quiz inside my
magazine to make them want to open the magazine to the contents
page and see where the quiz is then they will see what else is in my
magazine
7. What have you learnt about technologies from
the process of constructing this product?
During the course of the making of my magazine I have learnt how to use the
usual conventions of a magazine effectively and I have learnt about detail and
specific things that are put into a magazine. I learnt how to use Photoshop
successfully and then applied the knowledge I learnt into creating my own
school magazine. I used Photoshop to create my front cover as it allowed me to
resize, position and edit the photos I photographed. I outlined my images with
a shadow to make them stand out on the contents page. These skills I have
learnt from will be carried over into creating my music magazine. I learnt several
new skills during the process of making my magazine such as, cropping,
resizing and editing. In my opinion, this is why my magazine looks quite
realistic and I am happy with the outcome.
