Arya created a school magazine for Bishop Douglas School that incorporated conventions from both school magazines and mainstream magazines to appeal to teenage readers. Some conventions challenged typical school magazines, like using a masthead and a more professional layout. The target audience was students and parents to inform them of school events and plans. Attracting features included using an attractive student close in age to readers and colors on the cover that conveyed an optimistic yet mature tone for the 16-18 year old readership. New media technologies were used throughout the research, planning, construction, and evaluation stages, including PowerPoint, Photoshop, and online surveys.
2. To a certain degree, I believe my magazine does use, develop and challenge forms and
conventions of a school magazine, I used a variety of different conventions in which more
magazines on the market would use, rather than a school magazine. My research had
complied of high profile magazines, not just school magazines – thus the reason I applied
conventions which would be used in more mainstream magazines to my school magazine.
The reason behind this was to actually put my own spin on a school magazine, but also I
believe it would appeal to a more teenage audience if it was like those you would see in the
shop.
I believed I developed forms and conventions of a school magazine, by again, adding the
conventions you wouldn’t particularly see in school magazines but in mainstream
magazines and those in shops i.e. heat, NME etc...
For instance I used lures and banners to emphasis this development in conventions in
school magazines. But also the layout is one of a professional layout, which you wouldn’t
specifically see in school magazines. In terms of conventions, from most research I found
that there wasn’t any specific Mastheads, just basic school names; my school magazine
challenges this by having a specific Masthead, which is different from other school
magazines. Also I changed the actual layout of the magazine which was different to the
drafted version as it would have challenged the means of conventions, but would have
been different to normal magazines
3. My magazine is representing particular social
group by the language I used in my text. I
thought I would use a more formal way of
writing as this shows that my target
audience prefer that convention.
4. In my scenario ,my magazine is being made
for my school bishop Douglas and as well as
the parents of the students because the
magazine embodies the significance of
formality and shows how the school presents
themselves as mutual as possible.
5. The audience for my specific magazine would
mainly be the students and the
guardians/parents.The magazine will be used
to inform any key events and any upcoming
plans of the school as it is to be up to date to
the schools news and feed
6. There are a variety of ways I attracted my audience, I also mentioned these ideas throughout
developing my magazine, along with a variety of other ways, but these are the ones which I think
are crucial in attracting/addressing my audience.
The student I selected to be in the shoot for the main feature of ‘bd union’ is very attractive, and
fit societies idea of attractive. The fact that I used student who is 16 and 17, but made them look
more mature with their clothing, facial expressions and edits, make him look like he is about 18.
This would attract my audience because they are of similar age, which entices them to find out
about success since they have achieved a high status at such a young age.–Therefore suggesting
they are good, luring in a potential reader even more.
For the cover of my music magazine, I used the colours blue, yellow and light blue. These helped
put across the ‘optimistic’ appearance I was trying to convey. I think these colours are also seen as
quite monochromatic, therefore appealing as it isn’t seen as an immature magazine, but one
which will provide information. 16-18 is an age bracket where they have grown out of chaotic
colours and quirky fonts. The majority of this audience will be at sixth form/college/university,
therefore the colour scheme makes it look formal and attractive, treating them like young adults.
7. New media technology was constantly used in terms of the 4 stages. All stages required an equal
amount of use with new media technology. For the research stage, I had to use the internet in
order to look at school magazines that were out there, but also those mainstream and common
magazines, so I could implement them in my magazine.
Also for the research stage I used PowerPoint to put my research into a form, in which I could
comment on, to use in my magazines. Furthermore, for the research task I had to use a focus
group, which required me to do a questionnaire, which I did via Survey Monkey, this allowed
people to access my questionnaire via the internet, instead of me going round asking people to
comment on the magazine. For the planning stage of my magazine I mainly used PowerPoint this
was effective as it had the necessary tools to produce a layout format for my magazine, in my
next task I would use more forms of technology to create a better draft in order to produce a
higher quality of magazine.
For the construction stage I used Photoshop (a programme I hadn’t used before), this was
because it allowed a more creative and artistic way of producing a high quality magazine. Finally
for the evaluation stage, I used Microsoft word as it allows a very unique way of editing and
noting down any improvements I could make for my next task ,also it is easy to take not of any
changes I had made throughout the process of making my school magazine.
About this project For this task, I had to create a school magazine for my school,I have included
pictures of my front cover and contents as required in this task.
