MTV was originally launched in 1981 as a music video channel but now focuses on reality and scripted programming targeted at youth. It has spawned numerous sister channels internationally. Kerrang! TV, launched in 2001, covers mainstream rock and metal bands. Channel AKA focuses on playing upcoming UK urban/grime/hip-hop music and has helped breakthrough acts in those genres. VIVA replaced TMF in the UK and Ireland in 2009.
