Final Music Channel Research
1. Music Channel Research
MTV Base is a digital television
channel which began in the
United Kingdom on July 1, 1999.
Since then localised digital
broadcast versions for the
African Continent and France
have launched. The pan-European channel is also available in digital television in the
United Kingdom and through digital providers in the Republic of Ireland, Germany
and the Netherlands. The channel in Africa plays all genres of music appealing to the
primary youth and young adult audience including rap, hip-hop, R&B, Rock,
Alternative, Afrobeat, Kwaito, Reggae and many other genres from the African
continent, USA and other urban hotspots. MTV Base Africa also hosts a local awards
show and local events.
Q TV is a UK music channel based on Q Magazine, launched
in 2000. It is operated by Box Television, and specialises in
indie, rock and alternative. In common with other EMAP
channels, Q was originally a jukebox channel, where music
video selections made were by the viewers using premium
rate phone lines; however this element was dropped in
2004.
It is only available on digital satellite and cable.
For a few years much of the prime time output of the channel was instead given over
to FHM TV, based on another magazine (also by EMAP), which specialises mainly on
female R&B and pop groups. However in October 2007 the FHM TV block on Q was
dropped and now Q broadcasts its full hours again.
Kiss TV is a commercial music television channel from
Box Television available on the Sky Digital and Virgin
Media digital TV platforms. The playlist is
predominantly mainstream Urban Pop, Dance and
R&B, although since its relaunch in Summer 2006,
(and the launch of a sister channel Q TV) it has begun
to focus more on dance music once again.
It is based on the format of the Bauer owned London radio station Kiss 100, which
started as a pirate radio station in London in 1985. Kiss TV celebrated the 20th
Anniversary since the launch in 2005.
The original incarnation of Kiss TV was the brainchild of Guy Wingate who, as an
original co-creator of London's Kiss 100 (in its pirate days) was brought back in to
head up EMAP's fledgling TV division by the more-widely known Kiss chief, Gordon
2. McNamee (Mac). The channel ran for one hour a night on the Mirror Group's L!VE TV
cable circuit and after a year moved up to the Granada satellite and cable platform,
taking a similar slot in the evening.
Although the original idea came in 1993 (three years after Kiss FM launched as a
legal station), it took many months for Wingate to convince the UK Television
regulators to permit the extension of a brand name over to television. When the
permission finally came, Kiss had once again innovated by becoming the first
"Masthead" TV project in the UK.
Within one year, the station was tampering with MTV in its time slots and gained a
cult status for its low-budget edgy coverage of the UK dance music scene. Presenters
included legendary DJs such as Radio 1's Judge Jules. By the time it was a year-old, it
had attracted major sponsorship from blue-chip brands such as Levi's, Sony
Consumer Products and The Guardian newspaper.
It is now part of subscription packages on all platforms. It is part of a boquet of
channels owned by Box Television, (a joint venue between Bauer, and Channel 4)
which includes 4 Music, Kerrang! TV, Smash Hits, Q, The Box, and Magic.
Channel 4 is a UK public-service television broadcaster
which began working on November 2, 1982. Although
commercially self-funded, it is ultimately publicly owned;
originally a subsidiary of the Independent Broadcasting
Authority (IBA), the station owned now and operated by
the Channel Four Television Corporation, a public body
established in 1990, coming into operation in 1993.
Over recent years 4Music has risen, showing new single
releases, as well as other music shows frequently broadcast across T4, Channel 4 and
E4. 2007 saw its own logo being devised and since then has had many themed
weekends dedicated to a current band or performer.
On Sundays, Channel 4's 4Music strand aired between 17:00 and midnight on The
Hits. The first 'episode' was presented by the most successful female act of the
century Sugababes, however 4Music Sundays were meant to feature live acts and
also The Shockwaves Album Chart Show.
On 20 February 2008, it was announced that The Hits was to be rebranded as 4Music
later in the year, and on 15 August 2008, Channel 4 replaced The Hits with 4Music.
4Music is available on Sky Digital 360, Virgin 330 and Free view 18.
3. Box Television
In July 2007 Channel 4 bought 50% of Box Television Ltd for £28 m from Emap plc. It
has since emerged that, as a result of Emap's decision to sell off its divisions in a
break-up sale of the group, Channel 4 may be interested in acquiring the remaining
half of the business. Box TV operates 7 music TV stations (4Music, The Box, Smash
Hits, Kerrang!, Q, Kiss and Magic). Emap's stake in Box Television Limited was
transferred to new owners, Bauer Consumer Media, following Bauer's acquisition of
Emap's publishing and radio businesses
VH1 (known as VH-1: Video Hits One from 1985 to
1994 and VH1: Music First until 2003) is an
American cable television network based in New
York City. Launched on January 1, 1985 in the old
space of Turner Broadcasting's short-lived Cable
Music Channel, the original purpose of the channel
was to build on the success of MTV by playing
music videos, but targeting a slightly older demographic than its sister channel,
focusing on the lighter, softer side of popular music. The channel was originally
created by Warner-Amex Satellite Entertainment, at the time a division of Warner
Communications and owner of MTV. Both VH1 and its sister channel MTV are
currently part of the MTV Networks division of corporate parent Viacom. While VH1
still occasionally plays music videos and the Top 20 Video Countdown, its more
recent claim to fame has been in the area of music-related reality programming, such
as Behind the Music.
The Box is a music television channel in the United
Kingdom and Ireland. The channel is one of many
within the Box Television network, a joint venue
between Channel 4 and Bauer Group. The channel
mainly broadcasts music videos, although it also
features other music-related programming. The
channel broadcasts 24 hours a day with Teleshopping shown late at night.
The channel was brought to the United Kingdom by Vincent Monsey (of Radio
Caroline fame) and his partner Liz Laskowski, who discovered the channel in Miami in
1991 as The Jukebox Network. The UK Company, Video Jukebox Network
International Limited, was formed in 1991 and the channel was launched in 1992 as
THE BOX in the early days of cable television, carried by four operators United Artist,
Telewest in London and Bristol, Nynex in the south of England, and Videotron which
is also based in London.
4. Comparisson
Back in the day, MTV was all about music videos, but today it's more focused on
reality TV. Whilst the majority of viewers warmed to this, there were still plenty of
people who liked non-stop music vids, and that birthed MTV2. Funnily enough, this
channel now features other programming too, but there is a higher percentage
related to music videos than on MTV.

MTV2 play mainly indie, rock type music. They play all the latest videos from the
latest alternative bands. If you’re into your pop music, this isn't for you! So MTV2
plays bands such as Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Oasis, Kings of Leon etc.
Nowadays MTV has loads of add on channels. From the original MTV we have MTV
Base, a rather poor channel for those of us who like hip-hop, MTV Hits. MTV Dance
for Dance music and then theres MTV 2 showing the best alternative music.
Kiss 100 is a channel that is dedicated to R&B, it has a variety of exclusive songs on,
and this music channel is targeted towards the younger generations who are a fan of
R&B, finally a channel that caters for all their needs.
Kiss TV is a channel that allows you to phone in to request your video that you want
to hear and watch. The service is good, and gives you the latest videos but the videos
are normally garage music and R&B music. They sometimes show old videos because
some people request them. The phone lines are always available to phone and are
nearly never busy, but calls cost about 60p per minute. The view quality is good, and
there are never any technical problems with the programme. This programme is
quite new so not a lot of people watch it. It is a good channel to flick through while
waiting for a break because this channel almost never has any long breaks.
At one time, VH1 was a channel solely dedicated to featuring the latest music videos,
with a dash of other entertainment programs. Except for a few original shows, this
channel was, in addition to MTV, the place to go for new music and information
about artists. Now, like MTV, VH1 seems to have lost sight of its original goal. At
present, the only time videos are played is early in the morning or when they do one
of their top 100 lists. Most of the time, VH1 features television shows that glorify the
dark side of human nature, most of the time at the expense of women.
