2. Introduction
Music television uses specialised music channels which broadcast
on satellite and cable which are dedicated to playing music videos
from artists who are widely known and are in the public eye and also
artists who are up and coming and wanting to make a stamp in the
music industry.
There are many music television channels that can be found when
you turn on the TV, as a receiver of Sky+HD, there are lots of
channels that can be accessed at the touch of a button.

3. MTV
MTV, originally known as Music Television is an American network based in New York City
which was created on August 1st, 1981. The original purpose of the channel was to play
music videos introduced by an on-air host known as VJ’s/video jockey/media personality.
MTV is the most influential and legendary music channel, as they were a huge impact on
the music industry. The idea of having a dedicated channel for everything video-based.
MTV also broke the ‘colour barrier’ when it came to ‘non-white’ acts being played on music
channels. In the first few years of MTV, very few black artists were included in the show.
However this was soon changed when they started showing acts such as; Tina Turner,
Eddy Grant, and Donna Summer however the influential change in this started when they
first showed ‘The Specials’- Rat Race. However many artists afterwards were rejected
because they didn’t suit the AOR format at the time.

Sky has the largest range of music channels available, without having to pay extra for added
music packages, however if you do you get an even larger variety. Still in today’s society, MTV
music channels dominate the listings and some don’t just play music, they have reality shows
which are played early in the morning and very late at night.

6. VIVA
In the United Kingdom and Ireland, VIVA launched on 26 October 2009 by
Alexandra Burke, replacing TMF it has a completely different logo to the
other countries. Other countries that have this channel but with different
logos are; Switzerland, Austria, Hungary and Poland.
The first music video to be shown on Viva was Alphabeat's "The Spell" in
The Official UK Chart Show Top 20. It originally broadcast for 24 hours a
day until Nick Jr. was removed from the schedule for unknown reasons
(possibly related to Nickelodeon's worldwide rebrand). Therefore its hours
were reduced to 09:00 - 06:00. It was further reduced to 09:00 - 03:00 on 1
August 2011. The unused hours are now used for teleshopping.
On 19 September 2011 the channel started broadcasting in the 16:9 picture
format but the DOG is still set to the 4:3 picture format and looks stretched;
also, 4:3 programmes are appearing incorrectly with the top and bottom of
the image cropped.

7. Smash Hits
Launched on May 15, 200- The channel broadcasts general pop music in
shows such as Chartbusters, which is recent music and Pop
Domination, which is new and old music. It also shows other programmes
such as themed countdowns and charts such as Top 50 Boy Bands.
It is part of subscription packages on a number of platforms, including
Sky, and Virgin Media. It is part of a group of channels owned by Box
Television, which include 4Music, Kerrang!, KISS, Q, The Box, and Magic.
Smash Hits TV was also the name given to a spin off TV show broadcast
on Sky One in 2001.

8. 4Music
4Music launched on 15 August 2008- The channel launched with an
on-screen countdown counting down from ten minutes down to zero.
During the countdown, clips from popular music videos were faded
through the screen including clips from promotions for the channel.
The channel then launched at 7pm with a promotional advert for the
channel then fading into "Davina and Steve's 20 Big Ones"; the first
song at number 20 being "The Pretender" by The Foo Fighters and
Kylie Minogue's "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" at number 1.
4Music is a music and entertainment channel in the United Kingdom
and available on some digital television providers in the Republic of
Ireland - its web component can be found at www.4Music.com with its
own Facebook and Twitter pages. It is the only channel within the Box
Television Network to be branded under Channel 4.

9. Kerrang!
The first broadcast of Kerrang! TV in Spring 2001 had a countdown of voter's
most desired videos. The most popular choice and the first video ever shown
on Kerrang! TV was Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit. Limp Bizkit's Break
Stuff and Everlast's Black Jesus were also in the first 3 videos ever played.
Kerrang! TV is a digital television station owned by Box Television, which is
loosely connected to the magazine, Kerrang!. As of 2005, all of its programme
content is music videos, the majority of which is open scheduled, for text
requests from their playlist.
The TV station's playlist is mainly nu metal and pop-punk/skate
punk, although with some unusual exceptions. Certain bands, such as
Tenacious D and Limp Bizkit get higher than average play rates, due to higher
rates of text requests. Themed 30 minute segments often cover artists who
are on the playlist, with large numbers of videos, most noticeably Green
Day, Paramore and You Me At Six. There are also some unusual plays, such
as Beastie Boys, and The Bloodhound Gang.

10. Magic
Launched on September 13, 200- Magic TV is a British music television
station owned by Box Television. It plays mainly easy listening music videos
and is based on the Magic Radio network also owned by Bauer. Like some
other Box Television music television channels under Bauer's brand, Magic
operated a jukebox service where viewers were able to request videos to be
played via a premium-rate telephone number.
It is part of subscription packages on all platforms and is part of a bouquet of
channels owned by Box Television, which include 4Music, Kerrang! TV,
Smash Hits!, Q, The Box, and KISS.
Magic mainly focuses on music from the 80s and 90s although a large
section of daytime is now dedicated to 'Today's Magic Hits' to keep up with
the current market.

11. Airing My Video
I could use music channels to air my music video to make the artist, song and video more
popular.
Even though the song will not be in the charts, to give the artist and song its well deserved big
break I think that airing my music video as an ‘upcoming hit’ being played during the middle of
the chart show will make it successful.
