This document discusses multimedia and information and communication technology (ICT). It defines ICT as covering any communication devices or applications used to transmit information, and multimedia as a combination of text, graphics, video and sound delivered electronically. Digital multimedia integrates different media types digitally for presentation, storage, transmission and processing. Multimedia is used in education, entertainment, business, medicine, research and government for functions like training, presentations, simulations and conveying information to the public. Common file formats for text, images, video, audio and animation used in multimedia are also outlined.

2.  ICT or information and communication technology cover any
communication device or application including radio,
television, cellular phone, computer and network hardware
and software, satellite systems, as well as the various service
and applications.
 Multimedia is a combination of text, animated graphics,
video, and sound delivered to you via electronic means. It is
what appeals to users for entertainment, learning and
research.
 Digital Multimedia is the field concerned with the computer-
controlled integration of text, graphics, still and moving
images, animation, sounds and any other medium where every
type of information can be presented, stored, transmitted and
processed digitally.

4.  Education – Multimedia is used to create and produce computer-based
training (CBT) materials and courses, including online CD based
encyclopaedias.
 Entertainment – Multimedia use is very much present in many modern
movies and animations to develop special effects and virtual worlds.
 Business – PowerPoint presentation, that use all kinds of media, are
able to affectively convey information to clients, superiors, co -workers,
owners, and the general public.
 Medicine – Multimedia is very important in medicine to train future
doctors medical practitioner, for ex. In micro and virtual surgery.
 Mathematics and Scientific Research – Multimedia is used to stimulate
and model various situations that would otherwise be difficult to grasp
in real time, as in to case of an erupting volcano or a tornado, wherein
after effects can be presented a colleagues or to the learning public.
 Government – Multimedia is used by governments around the world to
convey information, procedures, and regulations for their citizens and
visitors.

image file format used are JPEG, PNG, GIF, and TIFF.
3. Video – add more attraction to users. Common digital video
formats are Flash, MPEG, AVI, WMV, and QuickTime.
4. Audio – aids more attraction with the user, it can also be
added as a background. Common audio formats are MP3,
WMA, Wave, MIDI, and RealAudio.
5. Animation – can include interactive effects which allow users
to interact with the use of mouse or keyboard. Common
animation formats are FLV, SWF, and ActionScript codes for
animated and interactive effects.
6. Online games – are universal on modern gaming platforms,
including PCs, consoles, and mobile devices.
7. Online test and courseware – are designed for teachers and
students.

computers. You can use create them using program that
come with your operating system.

7.  Video Files – a video file is a kind of file used as a means of
storing digital video files on a computer.
 .avi – Audio Video Interleave (AVI) file, one of the most popular
video container formats developed by Microsoft, can be played
using various video players.
 .fv – Flash Video file is a video container format using Adobe
Flash layer to distribute video over the Internet.
 .mp4 – MP4 video the (MPEG-4) is a multimedia container
format used to store digital audio and audio as defined by MPEG.
 .rm – Real Media (RM) file is a media file container format
developed and used by RealPlayer.
 .vob – DVD video Object file is a DVD-video container format
based on MPEG-2 Program.

8.  Audio Files – Audio file format is a kind of file used as a means of
storing digital audio data on a computer.
 .aif – Audio Interchange File (AIF) format is an audio format developed
by Apple similar to a .wav file. Playable using Apple QuickTime and
Apple iTunes.
 .midi – Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) file are recording of
digital musical tracks made possible by interface of musical
instrument to the computer.
 .wav – Waveform audio file format is an audio file format for storing
uncompressed waveform data used for CD-quality audio mainly for
Window-based computers.
 .mp3 – MP3 audio file (MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3) file is the audio format
developed by Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) to store music on a
computer at high audio quality but with a file size that is 1/10 the size
of .wav.
 .wma – Window Media Audio (WMA) file is the audio format developed
by Microsoft.
