Introduction “Today, it isn’t unusual to see people of all different races, ethnic backgrounds or cultural groups living in one society. Such a society is a mixture of different people. Since they live in a society that is influenced by many social factors, expressing their group identity without coming into conflict with other groups on general laws and customs may be a hard task.”
What can we say about this? It is easier for different ethnic groups to live peacefully in large cities than in smaller towns, since people in smaller locations are more likely to feel prejudice towards them and a little scared of different and strange people.
For Example: New York is a large urban centre where, although different cultures live in independent neighbourhoods within the city, like China Town or Little Italy, they don’t feel hatred or prejudice towards each other and live in harmony and have respect for one another.
For Example: Small towns, on the other hand, face various issues regarding racism. This is the case with the small southern towns of the U.S.A. In these locations African-American and Mexican people are stared at and sometimes even insulted. This happens because racial prejudice is deeply rooted in the mentalities of these people. Often it is only an issue of ignorance and fear towards strange cultures.
Who’s to blame? Discrimination is something we are all guilty of. All of us, even if unconsciously, discriminate because we find ourselves superior. It is normal to hear on the street expressions like: “That man/woman is really badly dressed!”,“That guy is gay!”, “Look, there goes a chink!”…
Who’s to blame? Racial Discrimination is to treat differently a person or group of people based on their racial origins. Power is a necessary precondition, for it depends on the ability to give or withhold social benefits, facilities, services, opportunities etc., from someone who should be entitled to them, and are denied on the basis of race, colour or national origin
Who’s to blame? Each one of us has their values, their opinions, makes their judgments and takes their own conclusions, but we should be aware that we all do this the same way. Independently of the colour of our skin, the way we move, of the shape of our faces or our religion we are all human, we are all rational beings and as such we don’t find a reason for this lack of respect towards society.
Quotes “I don't stand for the black man's side, I don't stand for the white man's side. I stand for God's side.” “Until the colour of a man's skin is of no more significance than the colour of his eyes - everywhere is war.” Bob Marley, musician
Quotes “Let us all hope that the dark clouds of racial prejudice will soon pass away, and that in some not too distant tomorrow the radiant stars of love and brotherhood will shine over our great nation with all their scintillating beauty.” “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character.” Martin Luther King, Jr., American Baptist Minister and Civil-Rights Leader
Quotes “Racism is man's gravest threat to man - the maximum of hatred for a minimum of reason.” Abraham J. Herschel, Jewish theologian and philosopher
Our Opinion We have to learn to set aside our differences and accept each other for what we are. If there wasn’t such and ethnic and cultural difference in our society life wouldn’t be as interesting as it is.
