Presentation by Olga McBarnett for the ESRC Seminar Series on Ageing and Physical Activity - "Community based showcase: Building sustained partnerships and sharing resources"
http://seminars.ecehh.org
The presentation addresses the importance of helping communities to reconcile the right of women to prevent unintended pregnancies and the inherent belief that practicing modern contraception is morally wrong. The Child Survival project in Burundi, which integrated birth spacing intervention clearly demonstrates women can be empowered to make decisions about their pregnancies.

Taste buds on the tongue
Influence of sense of smell, texture of food, and pain stimulation (e.g., by pepper)
Primary and Secondary Taste Sensations:
Primary taste sensations: Sweet, Sour, Salty, Bitter, Umami
Chemical basis and signal transduction mechanisms for each taste
Taste Threshold and Index:
Taste threshold values for Sweet (sucrose), Salty (NaCl), Sour (HCl), and Bitter (Quinine)
Taste index relationship: Inversely proportional to taste threshold
Taste Blindness:
Inability to taste certain substances, particularly thiourea compounds
Example: Phenylthiocarbamide
Structure and Function of Taste Buds:
Composition: Epithelial cells, Sustentacular/Supporting cells, Taste cells, Basal cells
Features: Taste pores, Taste hairs/microvilli, and Taste nerve fibers
Location of Taste Buds:
Found in papillae of the tongue (Fungiform, Circumvallate, Foliate)
Also present on the palate, tonsillar pillars, epiglottis, and proximal esophagus
Mechanism of Taste Stimulation:
Interaction of taste substances with receptors on microvilli
Signal transduction pathways for Umami, Sweet, Bitter, Sour, and Salty tastes

Ethanol (CH3CH2OH), or beverage alcohol, is a two-carbon alcohol
that is rapidly distributed in the body and brain. Ethanol alters many
neurochemical systems and has rewarding and addictive properties. It
is the oldest recreational drug and likely contributes to more morbidity,
mortality, and public health costs than all illicit drugs combined. The
5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM-5) integrates alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence into a single
disorder called alcohol use disorder (AUD), with mild, moderate,
and severe subclassifications (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
In the DSM-5, all types of substance abuse and dependence have been
combined into a single substance use disorder (SUD) on a continuum
from mild to severe. A diagnosis of AUD requires that at least two of
the 11 DSM-5 behaviors be present within a 12-month period (mild
AUD: 2–3 criteria; moderate AUD: 4–5 criteria; severe AUD: 6–11 criteria).
The four main behavioral effects of AUD are impaired control over
drinking, negative social consequences, risky use, and altered physiological
effects (tolerance, withdrawal). This chapter presents an overview
of the prevalence and harmful consequences of AUD in the U.S.,
the systemic nature of the disease, neurocircuitry and stages of AUD,
comorbidities, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, genetic risk factors, and
pharmacotherapies for AUD.

Flu Vaccine Alert in Bangalore Karnatakaaddon Scans
As flu season approaches, health officials in Bangalore, Karnataka, are urging residents to get their flu vaccinations. The seasonal flu, while common, can lead to severe health complications, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.
Dr. Vidisha Kumari, a leading epidemiologist in Bangalore, emphasizes the importance of getting vaccinated. "The flu vaccine is our best defense against the influenza virus. It not only protects individuals but also helps prevent the spread of the virus in our communities," he says.
This year, the flu season is expected to coincide with a potential increase in other respiratory illnesses. The Karnataka Health Department has launched an awareness campaign highlighting the significance of flu vaccinations. They have set up multiple vaccination centers across Bangalore, making it convenient for residents to receive their shots.
To encourage widespread vaccination, the government is also collaborating with local schools, workplaces, and community centers to facilitate vaccination drives. Special attention is being given to ensuring that the vaccine is accessible to all, including marginalized communities who may have limited access to healthcare.
Residents are reminded that the flu vaccine is safe and effective. Common side effects are mild and may include soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or muscle aches. These side effects are generally short-lived and far less severe than the flu itself.
Healthcare providers are also stressing the importance of continuing COVID-19 precautions. Wearing masks, practicing good hand hygiene, and maintaining social distancing are still crucial, especially in crowded places.
Protect yourself and your loved ones by getting vaccinated. Together, we can help keep Bangalore healthy and safe this flu season. For more information on vaccination centers and schedules, residents can visit the Karnataka Health Department’s official website or follow their social media pages.
Stay informed, stay safe, and get your flu shot today!

Increase in non-white people
Increase in lone parents
Economic position for young people
23% of population is 60+
Pensioners make up 1/5 of households and the majority live alone
Projected 26% increase in 65+ to 2021
25% rise in frail population (85+ - 90+) between 2001 – 2010
Largest projected increase in the most elderly (90+) to 2026
Started the Caribbean style in 2009 following the pilot study in 2007.
Chinese & Dosti style soon followed in 2010. Groups have been set up with small funding pots (small start-up grants) mainly from Bucks Community Foundation.
The Department of Health NHS Regional Health & Social Care Award – first prize in 2010 in the Mental Health and Wellbeing category
Also, the Mental Health Community Development won first prize in Success in Partnership Working with the Traveller Wellbeing Project
Examples taken from Q. feedback sheet for Movers & Shakers at Chesham Methodist Church for Ageing Well Conference (11.06.15). Qs were: Is M&S making a difference? What does M&S mean to you? Why do you attend? and What do you get from attending regularly?
Attendees of M&S groups often report an improvement in fitness – often their balance have improved after only a few weeks of participating in the exercise activities.
Questionnaire responses = 69 from est. 95-100 attendees of the initial trial sessions. Members’ age range – 50 > 77, majority in 70’s, female, Caribbean descent – Black British Caribbean in UK ethnicity monitoring terms. Participants = Caribbean Style Movers & Shakers.
Today we have 17 active groups throughout the County with 2 further groups being planned in Aylesbury and another 2 in the South Bucks District.
Reaching Diverse Communities – in areas of greatest need – Bucks perceived as affluent but with pockets of deprivation where people are less well off as listed in the national deprivation indices – factors of health and disability, income, education – skills & training, crime, employment, living environment and barriers to housing services. Also, Overall IMD = index of multiple deprivation.
The list of outcomes from service provider’s perspective and compared to member’s feedback on slides 4&5. For improving health/wellbeing – keeping active x 2 (body + mind) and encourages healthy eating. Inclusive – a diverse range of O/P benefits from regular attendance. M&S has demonstrated effective community engagement and successful partnership working in diverse communities. Individuals from ‘hard to reach’ as well as the wider communities have adopted M&S DIY style approach to improving wellbeing to build stringer cohesive communities.
M&S is mentioned in the Public Health Strategy, courtesy of Cllr. Julia Wassell. However, the project could benefit from strategic links to prevention, early intervention and other health related strategies.
MHFA – East & West Berkshire CD Leads utilised MHFA training under the guidance of Nick Buchanan to train hundreds of community members to raise awareness of MH issues in BME communities in an effort to reduce stigma and discrimination. Oxfordshire has conducted similar large scale training leaving Bucks somewhat behind in delivering MHFA training.
