Literary Argument On Willy Loman From Death Of A Salesman
Researched Literary Argument on Willy Loman from Death of a Salesman
Death of a Salesman by the author Arthur Miller revolves around one family and the troubles
they are facing due to growing older and becoming senile. Willy Loman was born on May 13,
1889, and in 1949 when the story is set, he was 60, this is during post WW1 America, this was a
different time with different social cues and norms that will be evident throughout the story. Willy s
ambition is to take part in the American dream and strike it rich by the sweat of his own brow. The
kind of success Willy is looking for is not merely being able to provide for his family but having
people know who he was what he was about and what a great character he had. Once Willy starts
lacking the success he is used to he becomes disconnected with the world and this is when his
senile tendencies start to show these things hint at a deeper medical problem; things like having
flashbacks to when he was happy and satisfied with his performance and the still unsquandered
potential of his progeny.
At a certain point in life once you ve been beaten down and stepped on you will reach rock bottom,
although not enjoyable, once there the only progression is an improvement to your current
situation. Willy has a hard time facing the music and accepting what is inevitable. this manifests
itself in the story through willy s inability to stay grounded in what s happening in the current
moment, his mind always wandering to a time in which

Compare the Functionalist and Marxist Views on Social...
CRITICALLY COMPARE MARXISM AND FUNCTIONALISM IN THE WAY EACH
PERSPECTIVE CONCEPTUALIZES THE PHENOMENON OF SOCIAL STRATIFICATION.
Social stratification refers to the presence of distinct social groups which are ranked one above
the other in terms of factors such as prestige and wealth (Haralambos Holborn, 2004). Those who
belong to a particular group or stratum will have some awareness of common interests and a
common identity. They also share a similar lifestyle which, to some extent, will distinguish them
from members of other social strata (Lenski, 1984). Social stratification involves a hierarchy of
social groups and they either enjoy or suffer the unequal distribution of rewards in society as
members... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These provide the preconditions for the emergence of a class of producers and a class of non
producers (Haralambos Holborn, 2004). According to Marx, the relationship between the major
social classes is one of mutual dependence and conflict. The wage laborers must sell their labor
power in order to survive since they do not own a part of the means of production. They are
therefore, dependent for their livelihood on the capitalists and the wages they offer. The
capitalists are dependent on the labor power of wage laborers, since without it there would be
no production. This relationship however, is one of an exploiter and exploited or oppressor and
oppressed. As such, the ruling class gains at the expense of the subject class which leads to a
conflict of interest between them. From a Marxist perspective, capital, which is the money used
to finance the production of commodities, is privately owned by the capitalist class. Marx
believes that this capital is gained from the exploitation of the working class (Haralambos
Holborn, 2004). This he further argued, produced nothing as only labor was capable of
producing wealth; yet still the wages paid to workers are well below the value of the goods they
produce. Therefore the capitalists realize a surplus value or profit. The bourgeoisie are therefore
exploiting the proletariat who are the real producers of wealth. Marx maintained that in all
societies, the ruling class exploits and oppresses the subject class. According to

Liberal Arts In Schools
93 percent of Americans consider the arts to be vital to providing a well rounded education for
children and a critical link to learning and success ( Why par. 3). Going against this though,
school budgets give less to arts programs each year. This can be exemplified in the lack of liberal
arts programs that schools across the country are able to provide. In 2009, a mere four percent of
schools offered theater classes and an even lower three percent offered dance classes (Metla par.
3) Of course the school must give time for the basic english, math, and history classes, but those
classes can be amplified in what students get out of them by the addition of liberal artscourses. If
students have an art or musicclass that gives them passion,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

From a young age, the arts start to show people different ways to view certain aspects of life. For
example, two people can paint the same scene or person but the pictures will look different. This
is because each person sees things in their own special way. The different ways people portray
their subjects is related to how they see them, but the real importance is that the painting itself lets
someone express how they see it. This different perspective helps others obtain new viewpoints as
well. This fact can also be proven in the theater. Theater is known to help give students new
outlooks on life as well as helps them understand their own lives (Fowler 89 90). These students
learn the roles of a huge spectrum of different characters, all that come from different places,
cultures, religions, and incomes. The opportunity to be put into the character of someone that has
had a completely different life can open eyes to problems, challenges, and even opportunities that
would otherwise go unlearned. If children are taught arts education at a young age they will better
develop the sense of others and that could even translate over into helping teach empathy and
compassion (Metla par

What Is The Collaborative Study On The Genetics Of...
Beirut et al. (2010) and Kalsi et al. (2008) focus on genes that are correlated to alcohol
dependency or AD. The disease can be described as the constant need to consume alcohol. Although
not as discussed, genetic variants play a role in individuals developing alcoholism. Through a
genome wide association study, these articles were able to identify and interpret some variants that
relate to this disease.
The article by Bierut et al. (2010) is a discovery science article, in which there are no hypotheses
tested. This article focuses on alcohol dependence and the genetic influences that contribute.
Various case subjects were used to analyze the results from, the Collaborative Study on the Genetics
of Alcoholism (COGA). In this genome wide ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They know that despite displaying a minimal correlation, there is a possibility for various genes to
contribute to alcoholism.
The Kalsi et al. (2008) article is a review article, therefore, lacking a hypothesis. The main idea
was to identify various genes that are related to alcoholism and how they affect the brain. The first
variant studied was DRD2, a dopamine receptor gene (Kalsi et al., 2008). This gene is known for
being related to addiction and pleasures in life. It is not shocking to know that this gene is
elevated in the nervous system, because alcohol raises the dopamine receptors and causes
drinkers to feel as if they need more, thus increasing their happiness. Another gene discussed is the
GABAA gene, a component of the GABRA2 gene. This component when found in AD, spikes an
increase in tolerance level, thus creating an effect in the brain to encourage the individual to
continue drinking. Once the tolerance levels have spiked, GABAA and another receptor gene,
NPY will induce withdrawal behavior. These variants, if found at low levels, play a vital role in
the onset of alcoholism. While understanding that the NPY gene may be found in the individuals,
the CREB signaling pathway must also be discussed. They observed a study on rodents to drive a
correlation between deficient genes and their correlation to humans. They observed this by
analyzing the

The Threat Of The Patriot Act
I Spy After the terrorist attacks of September 11th 2001, an American public was shocked,
flabbergasted, and lost for words for the first time since Pearl Harbor. Out of these fears the
PATRIOT act was conceived; promising to help stop future terrorist plots the bill was initially
met with high praise from the public and media. It was not for another decade that the side
effects of the patriot act were revealed to the world. The American public was appalled at the
circumvention of their fourth Amendment rights. Still there is a clear divide between those who
believe that the National Security Agency Is not violating the constitution and what they are
doing is good for the betterment of the country and those who believe that their privacy and
undeniable American freedoms were violated in part of the NSA spying with both parties
bringing their own views and ideals to the field. The September eleventh attacks were the
beginning of the end of privacy for American citizens the PATRIOT act which was signed a
month later granted full access to the phones and computers of the people. It took over a decade
for the public to become aware of the illegal spying that the NSA had conducted. The NSA spying
is a complicated and controversial matter while there have been several judicial courts that have
ruled against the spying there has also been just as many cases of the court s finding the spying
constitutional. The fourth amendment was put into place as a way for Americans to have

Essay On Hester Prynne The Greatest Sufferer
What makes someone suffer? Does being tormented make you suffer? Is being made fun of by
peers suffering? The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is set in an old Puritan society
where many people are persecuted for not following religion in any way whether it is a small sin
or a large sin. Hester Prynne is the greatest sufferer in the novel because she was publicly
humiliated in front of the whole town and has been an outcast for most of her life in that town.
Hester has been the greatest sufferer due to Minister Dimmesdale always keeping his secret from
the town in that it was in his best interest. He has always seemed to hide in daylight but show up
when no one is around, Ye have both been here before, but I was not with you. Come... Show more

Come, therefore, and let us fling mud at them! (120). Flinging mud at Hester and Pearl is
extremely disrespectful, nonetheless they do it anyways until Pearl scares them off. Even if
they didn t have mud spattered all over them it must have made her feel bad that even the young
kids dislike her for her sins. The town hates Hester as can be seen by this, This woman has
brought shame upon us all, and ought to die (60). People wanting her dead is extremely harsh for
having a baby and not saying who the father is when she is protecting him from the harshness of
the crowd as well. Hester has been doing a good thing for Minister Dimmesdale so no one knows
that he is the father. Keeping the secret from the crowd is difficult for she is suffering because it
would be a lot easier if she told who the father is, but she is keeping it in and it is easier to let
things out than keep them in. The Minister is never there for his child which can also impact him
by making him depressed. Some could say that the Minister is the greatest sufferer because he
always has the leech attached to him sucking his life from him. Minister Dimmesdale beckoning
for Hester and Pearl to stand with him, Ye have both been here before, but I was not with you.
Come hither once again, and we will stand all three together! (181). Dimmesdale is so depressed
that he wants to stand with Hester and Pearl on the town scaffold in the dark where no

It was 1021 AD when Ibn Al Haytham first created the one thing that captures the moment. The
first name of the camera was a camera obscura. It started as a room sized camera that had room
for 1 or more people. It has changed over many generations like from daguerreotypes, calotypes,

The first camera image was taken by Nicephore Niepce in 1816 but it turned black after being

Although there are many positive outcomes of a camera there are also negatives outcomes.
Especially in the first camera. To start, it wasn t until 1816 that a picture was actually created. So
even though there was a camera the pictures rarely stuck or stayed. Also, many people aren t using

Juvenile Crime Theories
Although juvenile crime tends to go unrecognized, it is a major issue in America and happens to
go unrecognized. There once was a time when society did not place emphasis on the special needs
of juveniles. In most cases children were taking on adult roles to help their families survived, which
caused them to struggle with identifying themselves in society. They were also subject to the same
consequences that adults received when they did something that was considered morally wrong,
forcing them to grow up before their time. There are multiple theories that are used when
considering the consequences for an adult offender. However, I personally feel that we should not
use the same theories for juvenile crimeunless the crime committed is a Mala In Se Crime, which is
considered wrong and inherently evil immoral.Studies have shown that our brains continue to
develop into our twenties, which confirms that the thought process that a child and an adult goes
through is completely different. A juvenile is not mentally of physically developed enough to
handle the severe consequences that an adult can. Just because someone makes... Show more

While serving his time he was often beaten by the guards and locked in his cell for long periods

Examples Of Leadership In Julius Caesar
Mark Antony s Leadership A leader s actions should motivate and inspire the group that they are
leading. The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, by William Shakespeare, depicts many strong and very
different portrayals of leadership. One of the leaders, Mark Antony, is a great friend and advisor
to Julius Caesar. Antony must deal with the aftermath of Caesar s murder for his own sake and
for his country s sake. Mark Antony s strong rhetoric and persuasive speech allow him to be an
effective leader. Antony is eloquent and very strong at convincing people to follow his lead. After
Caesar death, Antony tells Brutus that he wants to Produce [Caesar s] body to the marketplace,

Antony s sly words convince Brutus that him speaking at Caesar s funeral will benefit everyone.
Antony s language persuades the person who murdered his greatest ally, to have complete faith in
him. This characteristic of leadership demonstrates Antony s ability to meet his personal goals
using his dynamic speech skills. Brutus speaks before Caesar s funeral and mentions that Caesar
was ambitious. After Brutus speech, Antony makes an even better speech that refutes all of Brutus
points. Antony states that Caesar could not be ambitious because Caesar brought home wealth to
Rome, cried for the citizens, and that Caesar refused the crown three times. Antony cries after the
speech, and tells that citizens that judgement, thou art fled to brutish beasts (Shakespeare 83).
When Antony mentions this to the crowd, he causes the whole crowd to rethink their decision to
follow Brutus. Antony uses his words to convey to the crowd that Brutus could not possibly be
correct. Antony, crying after his speech, makes the Romans pity him and believe strongly in his
words. He furthers his cause by promoting to the crowd that they are a part of Caesar s will.
Antony states several times that he does not want the crowd to mutiny because Brutus is an

My Personal And Professional Branding
Critical Elements My personal and professional branding are the same: being passionate about
not limiting myself by my thoughts or actions, I am here to push the boundaries with those
around me. This may sound simple, but there is a lot that goes into it. Building a network of
strong, confident people is the key to being successful. My goal is to keep building these
professional relationships as well as in my personal life with the help of social media and goal
setting. For my professional branding, I am seeking others who are successful in the digital
advertising industry. If I am able to connect with these individuals, it will help to make me more
successful by learning from them. However, I want our relationship to go both ways, we learn
from each other and communicate openly. If I know my client works with a network, I am
unable to connect with hopefully they can get me in the door and I can give them the referral
business. My personal branding is very similar. I want to surround myself with people who are
motivated or have positivity as a goal. If they need encouragement, I am there to help them. The
stronger and more successful they become, the better I feel about myself. Someday, they will help
to encourage me to never stop being the best I can be. It is give and take. Working on my social
media networking opens up more doors. I use LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as my
main platforms. LinkedIn works great for my professional branding, without it I

The Exposition Of Jacob And Wilhelm Grimm s The Shroud
The Shroud is a very short story, only taking up one page. This short paragraph of a story still
conveys all the necessary elements of plot. Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm s short story The Shroud
contains all elements of plot; these elements all add up to create an artistic story that entertains the
reader. The exposition of The Shroud is short, only one long sentence. This exposition is There
was once a mother who had a little boy of seven years old, who was so handsome and lovable that
no one could look at him without liking him, and she herself worshipped him above everything in
the world (Lines 1 3). This sentence is the exposition because it introduces both the characters, the

The reader is now fully invested in the story because they want to know why the son is
appearing in these places, even though the son is dead. This sentence intensifies the conflict and
furthers the plot along. The inciting incident and rising action in The Shroud help further the
story, and get the reader further invested in the story. In The Shroud the climax comes quickly,
and is surprising to the reader. The climax of the story is As, however, the mother would not stop
crying, it came one night... and stood on the bed at her feet, and said, Oh, mother, do stop
crying, or I shall never fall asleep in my coffin, for my shroud will not dry because of all thy
tears which fall upon it. (Lines 9 12). The son coming to the mother in the night and speaking to
her is surprising to the reader. This is the point of the story with the greatest emotion, as the
mother is sad that her child is dead, and the child is not able to rest because of the mothers
intense sadness. The climax leads to a change, and in The Shroud the son speaking to the mother
leads to the mother changing her actions, the mother cries no more so that her son can move on.
The climax of The Shroud is when the mother and son are both full of emotion, and these emotions
lead to a change. The falling action of The Shroud wraps up all the conflict in the story, the boy

Grief And Pain
According to Leming and Dickerson (2011) Grief and pain is a common part of everyone s life
and should be expected at one point or another. As I once stated, there comes a time in life where
the helper will need to be comforted, the provider will need to be tended to and the strong will
need to be strengthened. For me, this time came while I was at the age of 21 years old. After I
married, I became with child and shortly found out that I was carrying twins. This was one of
the most memorable times of my life, I had never experience such joy and happiness; I felt as if
God had favorably smiled upon me. I experienced a very healthy pregnancy and carried my twin s

minutes hence, the doctor delivered my baby girl and boy to me and told me that I had given birth
to stillborn children. In layman s terms, they were deceased upon delivery. How could this be, I
asked myself. Instantly I was numb, I had no feeling toward anything. Although this was a painful
event for me, the real grief did not set in until about 30 days later. I remembered reading that to
understand the nature of a loss as it relates to a fetus, we must remember that relationship of a child
and parent starts way before the birth (Leming and Dickerson, 2011). Also, they stated that no
matter where in the life cycle death occurs, it is never easy for the survivor to make the
adjustment. Well, for me losing a baby before it even had a chance to experience what it was
like to inhale their first breath of fresh air seemed completely unfair. I found myself upset with
God; and felt as if He failed me. In my mind, this could not be happening to me. I am used to
helping others get through rough times in life, now I find myself on the opposite end of the
spectrum. Instead of comforting others, I needed to be comforted which what Leming and
Dickerson (2011) emphasized to their readers. My friends constantly tried to encourage me with
Romans 8:28, And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him,
who have been called according to his purpose (King James Version). This was the last thing I

Changes due to Urban Renewal in Pyrmont-Ultimo Essay
In 1900, Pyrmont was an important port and industrial area, with a population of almost 30 000
people. There was a wide range of industries and services present including wharves, dockyards,
warehouses, abattoirs, wool stores, railway yards and even an incinerator for the disposal of
Sydney s waste. It was deemed a working class suburb with a predominantly Irish/Catholic
population. As the income for Pyrmont was only modest, semi detached cottages were the most
common type of housing present.
In the 1960 s however, Pyrmont Ultimo was deteriorating at a fast rate and became an unfortunate
example of urban decay. The government policy of decentralisation, which is having industries

sustainability of Australia s cities and Pyrmont Ultimo was a targeted suburb for urban renewal.
There were several areas that the program aimed to improve including housing, transport, public
parks or open spaces and protection of the environment.
Housing:
Prior to urban renewal, Pyrmont Ultimo had residents with similar incomes. However to achieve
the goal of social equity plans were made for a mixed, high density, medium rise residential area.
Approximately 7500 new dwellings have been constructed plus the renovation of 1400 existing
dwellings. The aim was to cater for all household types such as families, couples and singles,
provide affordable housing for middle to low income earners, provide residential dwellings with
waterfront access and with water and city views, protect existing housing, retain a socially
diverse residential population which includes all income groups, provide opportunities to live
close to places of work and to create a high quality urban environment. The provision of
affordable or public housing was an important aspect to consider in the process. Without some
sort of intervention to provide this affordable housing, the attractiveness of living close to
Sydney s CBD would only be reserved for high income earners as dwellings would be too
expensive and rent would be too high. From a social equity point of view it was therefore vital to

Importance Of The Sixth Amendment
In 1787 the United States constitution was written, two years later the Bill of Rights was added.
The Bill of Rights consists of ten amendments which were designed based on the American
ideals to ensure that the federal government is not too powerful, and that it would protect the
rights of the people or of the state. One of the most important amendments in the Bill of Rights
is the sixth amendment, which gives the people the right to enjoy a speedy trial when accused,
and it allows the accused person to know the cause of the accusation and who his accuser is. It
clearly represents some of the American ideals such as: democracy, opportunity, and equality.
The sixth amendment provides more requirements for a fair trial in criminal cases. First, the
accused person has the right to enjoy a speedy trial, but that does not mean that the trial will be
done within two days, but rather means that, The country or state cannot make the person sit in
jail for a very long time, for example 5 years, while they wait for their trial. This would be very
unfair to anyone who is not guilty. ; that was mentioned in the website Laws.com. This means that
a person cannot wait in jail for committing a crime the rest of his life before proven guilty, that
would go against his right of pursuing happiness. The sixth amendment also permits the accused
person to know the cause of the accusation and know his accuser, and that leads to the second ideal
which is an opportunity or a chance to

Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Ulcerative Colitis
Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Ulcerative Colitis Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) refers to a
variety of conditions in which a chronic immune response and inflammation occur throughout the
gastrointestinal tract. Inflammatory Bowel Diseases are triggered by an abnormal response by the
body s immune system. In a normal functioning immune system, the cells protect the body from
infection. However, in those who are suffering from IBD, the immune system mistakes bacteria,
food, and other materials in the intestine as foreign substances and attack the cells in the intestines.
As an immune response, the body sends white blood cells to the lining of the intestines, ultimately
causing a chronic inflammation and the patient then experiences a variety of symptoms.
Symptoms of an IBD can vary, depending on the severity and location of the inflammation.
Common symptoms of an inflammatory bowel disease include abdominal pain and cramping that
usually disappear after a bowel movement, constipation or difficulty passing stool, diarrhea, fever,
gastrointestinal bleeding, gurgling or splashing sound heard over the intestine, nausea and
vomiting, pain in the joints, and undesired weight loss. Since these symptoms can indicate a
number of possible diseases, it can be difficult to determine the correct diagnoses. The two main
types of IBD are Crohn s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, but determining a patient s exact
diagnoses can be challenging.
Although Crohn s Disease and Ulcerative

On June 11, 2016, I attended an event at the Rhode Island Parent Information Network (RIPIN)

achieve health and education goals. There are different sessions that go on within the month for
different needs; every second Saturday is the meeting specially geared to Deaf children and
families. The meeting was held by Elsbeth, who is a mother of a child who is hard of hearing. This
session in particular involved transitioning into college. A young boy had lost his hearing with
age and he is going into his senior year of high school. He stated to the group that he was looking
into colleges and his mom, who was also present, was afraid about his academic success. This
student chooses to use hearing aids and lip reading as a method of understanding what hearing
individuals are saying. His mom stated when teachers do not follow with his 504 plan, he ends
up doing poorly in the class; otherwise he is an academically high achieving student. Both he and
his mom have high hopes, he wants to attend Brown for a science major. He instantly became sad
when mentioning that Umass is more proabable due to his hearing loss. He seemed to be timid
about asking for help or enforcing his 504 plan with teachers. The student stated that it is a hassle

The For The Nation And Its People Through The Various...
Hosea still had hope for the nation and its people through the various counts of sin. Hosea once
again invited the Israelites to repent for their sins for restoration. God promised them healing and
blessing in return. He used agricultural terms to describe the future blessings and repentance of
Israel which gained their attention, since they had a religion dedicated to a godthat provided
agriculture fertility (Arnold and Beyer, pg. 434). God had redemptive plans for the unfaithful
people (2: 6 15).
God had three therefore clauses to win back His people. He chooses to act in grace, in preference
of anger. His first therefore is to frustrate Israel over Baal by degrading his power, as if he had

They are breaking their covenant with God by doing what was prohibited in the Ten
Commandments, which summarize the covenant requirements. The people curse (take God s name
in vain), lie, murder, steal, commit adultery, and break all the boundaries laid out to regulate their
covenant relationship with God (Smith, pp. 84). Hosea had preached that behavior reveals true
faith and love. He brought up the many different kinds of issues because he was attempting to teach
the people that faith and community actions are a mirror of each other (Smith, pp. 84).
The second part of the covenant lawsuits include a course of accusations of sinfulness (6:7
7:16), an explanation of the punishments the nation will endure (8:1 9:17), and a final message
of hope (11:1 11). He provides a broad framework of the punishments of the people who deceived
God by not maintaining their covenant with Him. The priests and political leaders are called
out for being big contributors to the broken covenants and destroyed the nation. They turn away
from God, and lead others to do so as well. There is a great deal of accusations Hosea strives to
expose towards these cruel and untrustworthy leaders . The great amount of sins creates the idea
that restoration is impossible. This discrepancy of faith leads to the violent imagery God has
provided which is full of judgment because that is what Israel has done to God. Those who reject
God and turn to dishonest and disloyal leaders will experience his

Symptoms And Treatment Of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases
In the current world population there is a large increase in people diagnosed with inflammatory
bowel diseases (IBDs), lactose intolerance and/or a combination of the two. Theories suggest that
the delayed onset of lactose intolerance, in patients who already have IBD s, may arise as
secondary lactose intolerance but only as a byproduct of the IBD. This begs the question of if the
prevalence of an IBD predisposes that same person to lactose intolerance and if so, what are the
drivers that allow this to happen? Inflammatory bowel diseases are categorized into two subset
categories, ulcerative colitis(UC) and Crohn s disease. IBD s are defined as a chronic inflammation
of all or part of a digestive tract. The inflammation takes place... Show more content on

Those who are lactose intolerant also have diminishes levels of lactase, the small intestinal enzyme
responsible for the catalysis of lactose. Dietary supplementation of the lactase enzyme has, in some
cases, proven to rectify the symptoms of lactose intolerance.
During infancy the vast majority of humans have the ability to digest and catabolize lactose into
glucose and galactose via the lactase enzyme. This catabolic capability is vital for newborn
mammals, given that their primary source of nutrition comes from their mother s milk. During the
weaning period, when children cease to use milk as a primary source of nutrition, the production of
the lactase enzyme severely deteriorates and eventually leads to the inability to catabolize lactose.
While this may be the natural progression of the expression of the lactase enzyme, there remains a
large, predominantly western population that maintains a steady production of lactase, those
individuals are known as lactase persistent (Baumgart, et al.).
Lactase Persistence Causes: Lactase persistence has been strongly suggested to be a function of
genetic causes and its inheritance occurs in an autosomal recessive manner. Individuals that exhibit
the highest lactase activity are genotypically homozygous recessive for lactase persistence; where
as individuals who show lower lactase activities are heterozygous or homozygous

British Colonial Identity
Between 1607 and 1754, many British North American colonies were formed. Numerous colonists
migrated to the New World seeking profit. One thing that many of these colonists had in common
was that they still felt British at heart. However, as the colonists became more set in their own
ways, their resentment of English rule grew. Eventually, the British American colonists created a
self identity distinct from that of the citizens of England. Environmental factors like the difference
in land and political factors like the governmental structure contributed to a colonial identity that
would one day lead to the colonial break with England.
Environmental factors, especially the vast difference in landscape between North America and the
British Isles, as well as the profit which could be earned from the land were pivotal in the colonists
ultimate decision to break away from England. The South had fertile soil that allowed crops to
flourish. This allowed the colonists to create an economy independent from that of Britain. In
addition, the plentiful land made it easier for colonists to own territory. In the North, where there
was less ideal farmland for traditional agriculture, the colonists succeeded at trades, such as timber,
fishing, and shipbuilding. These people had a more diversified economy that further fueled the
separation economically from England. Because the colonists and their mother country had such
vast differences in land, the colonists came to view themselves as

Compare And Contrast The American And Mary Wigman
Isadora Duncan and Mary Wigman both started with the same idea of dancing, and how they should
incorporate human movement instead of ballet that was more unnatural to the body. Even though
they had a similar thought about modern dance, they had one thing that made them very different,
which was their choreography. Duncan pieces were lively and upbeat, and Wigmans were dark and
mysterious. They both approached modern dancethrough a different eye. Even if they lived in two
different parts of the world, The American, as represented by Isadora Duncan, and the German, as
represented by Mary Wigman, (Cass 247), the world would then get two different choreographers
that were evolving at the same time in history, which impacted the dance history.... Show more

Duncan was more for students and anyone around her to make their own movements, she didn t
really want to make up her own technique but she wanted dancers to be creative and find what
they found beautiful. So the way she would do her choreography would depend on how she was
feeling which led her dancing more of an expressed dance form. I guess you can see Duncan s
approach in what she wanted, was to see the dancer of the future. Although, she didn t have any
recorded choreography it was said that after the loss of her children her dances became sad and
not as impressive. But if I have to answer how Duncan approached her own choreography I
would say, to be free and to dance what one feels. Like mentioned by Irma Duncan in the book
by The Technique of Isadora Duncan, Isadora Duncan has said, that her dance was not of the
theater, but an expression of life, and that she did not train the pupils of her school for the stage,
(ix). Wigman, also believed that expression was the key to make a good choreography but
Wigmans pieces where more stable and concrete. Interested in the relationship between human
being and cosmic forces, she describes her creative experience as the transformation into movement
of the invisible forces that give her life. The dancer is a medium for her; dance functions as a
trance, accomplishing its cathartic function recognized by archaic

“the Destructors” and “the Lottery” Fiction Essay
The Destructors and The Lottery Fiction Essay Introduction Some may say that we are, as

the violence in us can grow to extreme proportions. These two stories, The Destructors by

Jackson herself was born in San Francisco, California in 1916 and later entered Syracuse

farming area, whereas Jackson has lived in mostly city environments. Comparing the two stories

location and his own experiences regarding World War II. In Jackson s The Lottery , the location
is vaguer. She paints a picture of a small rural farming type town and didn t seem to draw

pause. As a matter of fact, when I read it over later I decided that except for one or two minor
corrections, it needed no changes, and the story I finally typed up and sent off to my agent the
next day was almost word for word the original draft. Jackson s main point was to shock its

The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Search Engine...
Many webmasters believe that Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the only way to receive more

Cost Per Mille (CPM)
Cost per mille (CPM) impression is a way of measuring the amount of money that an advertising
company has to pay to a publisher per thousand views of their ads. The M in CPM denotes 1,000
in Roman numeral terms since mille stands for one thousand in Italian, French, and latin. It is one
of the most common methods of pricing ads on the internet. CPM is calculated by dividing the cost
of an ad placement by the number of expressions (in thousands) it generates.
Click through Rate (CTR) plays an important role in CPM campaigns since it denotes the number
of visitors that clicked on the advertisement and visited the advertiser s landing page out of the
thousand that viewed the advertisement.
The importance of creating great advertisements to grab the attention of customers cannot be
denied for the success of a CPM campaigns. If only a few visitors actually click on the
advertisement, the advertiser may not be able to justify the expenses incurred for CPM advertising.
Another important thing is to have the right landing page design to make sure that the visitor does
not leave the website without doing what the advertiser wants him do i.e. make a purchase, sign up

Muriel spark s The Prime of miss Jean Brodie is a perfect representation of the influence of
authority within social groups. The story follows a group of six girls, Sandy, Jenny, Rose, Mary,

Miss Brodie takes these girls under her wing, teaching them everything she can about life, but

Agricultural Biotechnology Essay
Agricultural Biotechnology Due to the greater understanding of DNA, the field of Agricultural
Biotechnology has developed rapidly over the last 30 years. Agricultural Biotechnology is a set
of tools to modify products, improve plants and animals, and make microorganism for
agricultural uses. It s being used to produce products cheaper and easy to maintain. More and
more farmers and producers used genetic engineered crops because of the price and resistances to
insects and diseases. The main aim is to meet human and environmental needs. Biotechnology is a
set of tools that uses living organisms to produce or modify a product, improve plants or animals,
or develop microorganisms for specific uses. The latest set of tool some say greatest is genetic
engineering. It allows the transfer of useful characteristics into a plant, animal, or microorganism by
inserting genes from another organism. Genetic engineering which uses molecular markers to
select plants or animals that give a desirable gene, allows segments of DNAthat code genes for a
specific trait to be recombined into a new. Desirable traits producers choose is short growing
seasons, increased resistance to diseases and pests, larger seeds and fruits, nutrition, and better
adaption to environmental conditions. An example is the International Institute of Tropical
Agricultural has used molecular markers to obtain cowpea resistance to bruchid (a beetle). That s

Limitations Of Racist Speech
Limits on Racist Speech in Public Contexts
When the first amendment is brought up, one of the first things that comes to mind is free
speech. Even though we don t give it much thought, our free speech does have limits. The more
obvious limits such as knowing that you can t threaten people or shout Fire! in a crowded space
make sense because it s easy to see how they cause direct harm. These general limits are important
in order to ensure a safe and peaceful society, but when it comes to voicing prejudice views, it
becomes difficult to determine what should and should not be restricted by the first amendment.
After all, when negative and hurtful opinions are directed at a specific group of people, it becomes
hard to see how protecting them could be a good thing. The important thing to remember is that
when sharing these views becomes harmful and leads to harassment, it is no longer protected under
the first amendment. However, everyone sees things differently, so drawing the line between
what is just offensive and harassment needs to be determined and treated on a case by case basis.
This will not only allow us to come to a solution for these individual problems, but it leaves room
for discussion which will help to combat the root cause of prejudice.
While trying to think of ways to regulate racist speech, we might think that an easy solution
would be to place a ban on racist speech altogether, but this quickly becomes problematic.
Banning specific opinions and beliefs would no longer make our speech free, and even when
people are permitted to share wrong or offensive opinions, protecting free speech still has more
potential benefit than harm. This gives us the right to speak out against our government when it is
doing something we disagree with, but it also allows people to share their racist views. If we want
to continue to reap the benefits, we also have to accept that racist speech is a part of free speech,
thus protected under the first amendment. This is not the same thing as saying that racist speech
should be unregulated; there are regulations for when hate speech becomes harmful, but the
government shouldn t and isn t responsible for regulating it. The issue of regulating racist speech is

Racial Stereotypes Of Asian-Americans
Today, when society talks about diversity, often times, Asian Americans are brought into the
conversation and are talked about as highly looked up to individuals, but they haven t always
been this way. On television, many times, Asian Americans are represented as nerdy and socially
incapable/awkward , Asian American males are mostly shown as being weak and stereotypically
awkward, while Asian American females are either shown as exotic or also stereotypically
awkward and nerdy, as stated by Takaki in his book Strangers from a Different Shore on page 479,
Hopeful a college education can help them [the students] overcome racial obstacles, they realize the
need to be serious about their studies. But white college students complain: Asian students are
nerds. This very stereotype betrays nervousness fears that Asian American students are raising class
grade curves.
Though, these representations do only account for the three most popular Asian ethnic groups:
Japanese, Chinese and Korean. The other Asian ethnic groups are mostly invisible to society, some
groups, such as the Vietnamese Americans and the Hmong Americans, are known for their
population size. These groups are also the groups that tend to live in areas that are largely
populated with the same race, therefore, congregating to one area. A lot of times, I ve realized
from personal experience, that when people realize that I am Asian, they tend to compare me
with the stereotypes that are generally associated with being Asian American. Often, I am told
that I am tall for being Asian as the stereotypes say that Asians females generally are shorter in
stature and are petite with light skin and pin straight black hair. On occasion, I am told that I look
more Hawaiian than I do Asian due to my darker skin and bigger build. Though, I do hear a lot of
comments regarding my eyes and about how little they are. These experiences have made me
believe that the role that Asian Americans play in the race conversation now is that when the
conversation turns to Asian America, people automatically look towards stereotypes along with
looking at certain traditional cultures often stating things such as, I really like Asian foods or, I

Comparing Jane Austen s Pride And Prejudice
I.Introduction
a.As written in How to Read Literature Like a Professor, there s only one story, but each one is
unique in how it s put together. This can be seen as one reads Pride and Prejudice and the cruel
treatment in society and the love that drifts through seems like a clichГ©, but the story is still its
own book.
b.Summary: With news of a wealthy family coming to town, the Bennet family sets their minds
to get at least one of their five daughters married. Upon going to visit the wealthy Bingleys, Jane,
the eldest daughter, gets sick in the rain and must stay at their house in Netherfield under the care
of her family s second oldest daughter, Elizabeth. The true personalities of the Bingley family
then come out to be snobby and rude, except for Mr. Bingley and his friend Mr. Darcy. As real and
fake love fills the air, the Bennet s youngest daughter gets ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Elizabeth then forms prejudices against both Mr. Darcy and Mr. Wickham. She immediately
looks poorly upon Mr. Darcy, but very highly on Mr. Wickham, who she believes to be too
handsome and trustworthy looking to lie. With this, she also looks down on Charlotte for
marrying for money, but believes it s okay for Mr. Wickham to as a man in distressed
circumstances has not time for all those elegant decorums which other people may observe
(Austen 115). This is not only evidence of her prejudice, but shows the difference on how males
and females are viewed, for what is okay for one to do may not be for the other.
d.Towards the end, the happy mood starts to come out as love is formed. After their fight when
Mr. Darcy proposed, Elizabeth notices how he has fixed the quirks she pointed out, which Austen
uses as a way to lighten the tone of the novel and end it on a happier note.
e.Although their views may have been very harsh and negative in the beginning, both Elizabeth
and Mr. Darcy leave the novel with very little prejudice and only good pride, but the reader has the
same feelings when they close the

My Hero s Journey-Personal Narrative
You were absolutely stunning today as usual Haven! MarTay exclaimed.
I pulled my hair up into a pony tail and slung my purse over my shoulder before responding to him.
You say that every time, I pointed out, smirking.
MarTay is one of the photographers I work with. Paying for a college education at Pepperdine
University cheap, especially since my parents haven t invested a single dime towards my degree.
Therefore, when I found out that a local modeling agency was having open call auditions, I figured
it would be worth looking into. It turns out that I prefer posing in front of cameras for a stack of
cash rather than dealing with snobby customers for minimum wage.
Just being honest! he chuckled. You should truly consider this as a full time... Show more content

We ve grown accustomed to finishing all of our work by Friday evening so that we could go out
on the weekends.
Woo! Hallelujah, I am done! Tegan cheered. If I earn anything less than an A on my Kinesiology
essay, that ll attest to my theory that Brewster is racist.
I rolled my eyes, Both you and Professor Brewster are white.
Whatever. She dismissed me. Just hurry up with whatever you re working on so we can party!
Honestly, I hoped I could have a quiet night in with a bag white cheddar popcorn and some Netflix.
I continued editing my PowerPoint presentation.
Tegan hopped off her bed and headed towards her closet. Orange is the New Black will still be here
when we get back, she dismissed. Besides, I heard there s this club near campus with a super sexy
bartender who works on the weekends.
Tegan has two different extremes. During the week, she practically lives in the university library.
However, on weekends, Tegan can easily be mistaken for a paid nightclub dancer.
I m not in the mood to be your designated driver while you get sleazy and hook up with even
sleazier bartenders, I sighed.
I hit save on my computer after making a few finishing touches to my

Impact Of The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill During The Gulf...
CASE STUDY
IMPACT OF THE DEEPWATER HORIZON OIL SPILL IN THE GULF OF MEXICO ON THE
LOCAL ENVIRONMENT
INTRODUCTION
The Gulf of Mexico covers an area of 600,000 square miles and is located between Mexico, Cuba
and the United States (Tunell, 2011). Home to 15,419 recorded marine species; the Gulf of
Mexico boasts a dynamic ecosystem, which includes 1511 endemic species. The position of the
gulf between temperate and tropical waters provides one of the reasons for its vast biodiversity
(Campagna et al., 2011).
On April 20, 2010 the British Petroleum Deep Water Horizon (DWH) drilling rig exploded and
subsequently sank in the waters of Gulf of Mexico. The result was the largest leakage of crude in
the United States to date (Middlebrook et al., ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Primary pollutants detected consisted mostly of hydrocarbons that were emitted into the
atmosphere from evaporated or burned oil on the water surface, and nitrogen oxides, emitted by
both the flaring of the natural gas and from the clean up processes close near the spill site. Once
in the atmosphere, these compounds photochemically reacted to produce secondary pollutants
such as Ozone and peroxacetyl nitrates (PANs) (Middlebrook et al., 2011). Other pollutants were
also detected, such as secondary organic aerosols (SOA), a product of intermediate volatile
organic compounds, and soot particles, black carbon and carbon monoxide from in situ burning of
oil or from the cleanup processes (Gouw et al., 2011).
According to EPA (2016), air pollutants, especially fine particles ( 2.5Ојm), can cause health risks
to respiratory systems of both humans and animals. These pollutants can contribute to the formation
of acid rain, damage vegetation, deplete nutrients in soil, contribute to cloud formation and affect
climate, and reduce visibility. In addition, secondary pollutants can travel large distances from
their point of formation, thus they can be a cause of concern for distant areas. Fortunately, as
stated by Middlebrook et al. (2011), the DWH Oil spill had a limited impact on air quality due to the
distance from

Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the New Deal
...The only thing we have to fear is fear itself ...
Franklin Delano Roosevelt s New Deal program focused on provided relief, recovery and reform to
struggling Americans. The New Deal both conservative and radical relied on heavy government
intervention, to diminish the strain and prevent a repeat of the Great Depression.
The New Deal set out to provided relief for the needy, economic recovery and reform to basic
government institutions. Although the New Deal, was not a complete success it created a political
coalition that helped millions of Americans withstand the privations of the great depression. The
New Deal allowed the federal government to become more involved in the lives of Americans.
FDR stressed the importance of government intervention, to shield Americans from the economy.
FDR S New Deal aimed to help the forgotten man at the bottom of the pyramid . The New Deal
gained strong support from farmers, factory workers, immigrants, city folk, African Americans,
women, and progressive intellectuals. FDR wanted to help the poor, who were most affected by
the depression. Roosevelt s new experimental programs expanded our government s role in
American society and economy, and left many Americans with the hope that the US government
would improve conditions. The New Deal adopted a radical motto, seeking immediate relief:
action, experimentation and improvisation became the New Deals Slogan. This motto allowed the
New Deal to move from ideas to policy, with

How Did Cleopatra Rise To Power
Cleopatra s rule over Egypt was gained by her influence on male leaders to gain power.
Cleopatra is one of the most remembered if not revered leaders of history due to her sheer
intellect, passion, and persuasiveness. Her ability to make allies and grow her empire into
something large and vast shows her vision and work ethic. The influence she had on people is
what helped her gain power over Egypt, but it is what ultimately led to her unfortunate downfall.
Cleopatra comes from a Ptolemaic background. The Ptolemaics were of a Macedonian Greek
background and ruled over Egypt during the Hellenistic period. This time period was from around
305 BC to 30 BC. The Ptolemaic dynasty was the last dynasty of ancient Egypt. Her father, Ptolemy
XII, ruled from 80 BC to 58 BC due to his exile to Rome in 58 BC to 55 BC. During the
restoration period from 55 BC to 51 BC is where Ptolemy wrote in his will that Cleopatra and her
brother Ptolemy XIII would have joint rule of the throne. Her Legacy was passed down onto her
by her father, Ptolemy XII, after he died in March of 51 BC. Cleopatra and her brother Ptolemy
XIII were made joint monarchs, they shared the throne. The first years of the joint monarchy were
difficult. There was much economic failure, political unrest, famine and flooding of the Nile.

This gave her an open window to take advantage of Caesar s anger towards Ptolemy s actions.
Cleopatra was still in need of a plan to get to Caesar. Still in exile, Cleopatra had to find a way into
Alexandria in order to obtain an audience with Caesar (Jones 33). When Cleopatra was requested
by Caesar she was then able to have a meeting. To gain entry to Caesar s quarters, Cleopatra
wrapped herself in some bedding, which Apollodorus then secured with a leather strap and carried
into the palace (Jones 33). At the time Cleopatra was 21 year s

How To Write A Robotic Basketball Essay
Tiarra Rodrigues and Ryan Hunter
Robot Basketball Essay #1
In order to actually make a basket, you have to understand the basic fundamentals of shooting
which involve simple mechanics. Firstly square your shoulders towards the target whether it is a
wall or the actual basket. Place your dominant shooting fingers under the ball, tuck your elbow
close to your body and balance the ball lightly to achieve a greater percentage of success. The
horizontal and vertical alignment of the person to the court needs to be at a reasonable distance to
start off if you are a beginner. The most common shot is known as the free throw shot (used by
mostly younger individuals) in which the person should lack the strength/ability to shoot the ball
with one hand. Rick Barry, the former NBA player, was an advocate of channeling... Show more

After the final dribble, the ball should meet the person s hand and shouldn t cross their mid line.
There is a shot also called a jump shot in which a person is to jump straight up and perform the
basic shooting form. One of the more famous shots is known as the dunk; also the most popular
person to perform this particular shot Michael Jordan. Dunk totals represent a general
aggressiveness needed by a player to access this shot: a willingness to persevere through people
and down the court, pick up your place from fouls, and to try for the offensive rebound, and athletic
ability must be prominent all things that a good team should have. Dunks are attained by a negative
stigma from basketball purists because many have no compassion when their head is in the game
such as players like Andre Iguodala: star players on bad teams whose score and dunk has garnered
them more media attention from the public which helps the team but also turns one against his
team mates also their financial compensation is endowed more than their actual natural basketball
skills. Centers and power forwards are the types of players who

How would you react if you woke up in a dark box, surrounded by strangers, and you couldn t
remember anything about your life before that moment? James Dashner writes his book, The
Maze Runner, about a boy who finds himself in that position and how he reacts and get along with
others. James got a lot of his inspiration from other stories and movies he read or saw growing up
(Veronica). He took all the inspiration he had and he turned it into a thriller story that keeps the
reader engaged throughout the whole story. Whether he meant to or not, his story has an
underlying theme to not give up, to keep trying until you succeed. The story starts off with the main

What Are The Similarities And Differences Between Koalas...
Frogs are a large, carnivorous group of small bodied, tailless amphibians who on average live for
10 12 years. In contrast, koalas are arboreal herbivores and are marsupials that are native to
Australia who can live up to 18 years, old according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koala.
Although, these two animals, like many other creatures, are unfortunately endangered but for
various reasons. There are countless problems facing towards koalas and frogs and they are
obviously not all the same. The troubles that the koalas and frogs face can easily be compared
and contrasted. Scientists have been looking for ways to save koalas and frogs, but they do not
all work. Therefore, there are many similarities and distinctions between the problems for frogs
and koalas. As a matter of fact, there are not too many similarities between the problems for these
animals. Nonetheless, there is one major thing that has caused both of these animals to be
endangered species, and that one thing is the work of humans. Without a doubt, humans
specifically play a crucial role in killing off frogs and koalas around the globe. One particular part
of these animals lives that are essential to them living is their habitat. Unfortunately, as the human
population is growing at a fast rate, more and more of these habitats... Show more content on

  • 2. Literary Argument On Willy Loman From Death Of A Salesman Researched Literary Argument on Willy Loman from Death of a Salesman Death of a Salesman by the author Arthur Miller revolves around one family and the troubles they are facing due to growing older and becoming senile. Willy Loman was born on May 13, 1889, and in 1949 when the story is set, he was 60, this is during post WW1 America, this was a different time with different social cues and norms that will be evident throughout the story. Willy s ambition is to take part in the American dream and strike it rich by the sweat of his own brow. The kind of success Willy is looking for is not merely being able to provide for his family but having people know who he was what he was about and what a great character he had. Once Willy starts lacking the success he is used to he becomes disconnected with the world and this is when his senile tendencies start to show these things hint at a deeper medical problem; things like having flashbacks to when he was happy and satisfied with his performance and the still unsquandered potential of his progeny. At a certain point in life once you ve been beaten down and stepped on you will reach rock bottom, although not enjoyable, once there the only progression is an improvement to your current situation. Willy has a hard time facing the music and accepting what is inevitable. this manifests itself in the story through willy s inability to stay grounded in what s happening in the current moment, his mind always wandering to a time in which ... • 3. Compare the Functionalist and Marxist Views on Social... CRITICALLY COMPARE MARXISM AND FUNCTIONALISM IN THE WAY EACH PERSPECTIVE CONCEPTUALIZES THE PHENOMENON OF SOCIAL STRATIFICATION. Social stratification refers to the presence of distinct social groups which are ranked one above the other in terms of factors such as prestige and wealth (Haralambos Holborn, 2004). Those who belong to a particular group or stratum will have some awareness of common interests and a common identity. They also share a similar lifestyle which, to some extent, will distinguish them from members of other social strata (Lenski, 1984). Social stratification involves a hierarchy of social groups and they either enjoy or suffer the unequal distribution of rewards in society as members... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These provide the preconditions for the emergence of a class of producers and a class of non producers (Haralambos Holborn, 2004). According to Marx, the relationship between the major social classes is one of mutual dependence and conflict. The wage laborers must sell their labor power in order to survive since they do not own a part of the means of production. They are therefore, dependent for their livelihood on the capitalists and the wages they offer. The capitalists are dependent on the labor power of wage laborers, since without it there would be no production. This relationship however, is one of an exploiter and exploited or oppressor and oppressed. As such, the ruling class gains at the expense of the subject class which leads to a conflict of interest between them. From a Marxist perspective, capital, which is the money used to finance the production of commodities, is privately owned by the capitalist class. Marx believes that this capital is gained from the exploitation of the working class (Haralambos Holborn, 2004). This he further argued, produced nothing as only labor was capable of producing wealth; yet still the wages paid to workers are well below the value of the goods they produce. Therefore the capitalists realize a surplus value or profit. The bourgeoisie are therefore exploiting the proletariat who are the real producers of wealth. Marx maintained that in all societies, the ruling class exploits and oppresses the subject class. According to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Liberal Arts In Schools 93 percent of Americans consider the arts to be vital to providing a well rounded education for children and a critical link to learning and success ( Why par. 3). Going against this though, school budgets give less to arts programs each year. This can be exemplified in the lack of liberal arts programs that schools across the country are able to provide. In 2009, a mere four percent of schools offered theater classes and an even lower three percent offered dance classes (Metla par. 3) Of course the school must give time for the basic english, math, and history classes, but those classes can be amplified in what students get out of them by the addition of liberal artscourses. If students have an art or musicclass that gives them passion,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From a young age, the arts start to show people different ways to view certain aspects of life. For example, two people can paint the same scene or person but the pictures will look different. This is because each person sees things in their own special way. The different ways people portray their subjects is related to how they see them, but the real importance is that the painting itself lets someone express how they see it. This different perspective helps others obtain new viewpoints as well. This fact can also be proven in the theater. Theater is known to help give students new outlooks on life as well as helps them understand their own lives (Fowler 89 90). These students learn the roles of a huge spectrum of different characters, all that come from different places, cultures, religions, and incomes. The opportunity to be put into the character of someone that has had a completely different life can open eyes to problems, challenges, and even opportunities that would otherwise go unlearned. If children are taught arts education at a young age they will better develop the sense of others and that could even translate over into helping teach empathy and compassion (Metla par ... The disease can be described as the constant need to consume alcohol. Although not as discussed, genetic variants play a role in individuals developing alcoholism. Through a genome wide association study, these articles were able to identify and interpret some variants that relate to this disease. The article by Bierut et al. (2010) is a discovery science article, in which there are no hypotheses tested. This article focuses on alcohol dependence and the genetic influences that contribute. Various case subjects were used to analyze the results from, the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA). In this genome wide ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They know that despite displaying a minimal correlation, there is a possibility for various genes to contribute to alcoholism. The Kalsi et al. (2008) article is a review article, therefore, lacking a hypothesis. The main idea was to identify various genes that are related to alcoholism and how they affect the brain. The first variant studied was DRD2, a dopamine receptor gene (Kalsi et al., 2008). This gene is known for being related to addiction and pleasures in life. It is not shocking to know that this gene is elevated in the nervous system, because alcohol raises the dopamine receptors and causes drinkers to feel as if they need more, thus increasing their happiness. Another gene discussed is the GABAA gene, a component of the GABRA2 gene. This component when found in AD, spikes an increase in tolerance level, thus creating an effect in the brain to encourage the individual to continue drinking. Once the tolerance levels have spiked, GABAA and another receptor gene, NPY will induce withdrawal behavior. These variants, if found at low levels, play a vital role in the onset of alcoholism. While understanding that the NPY gene may be found in the individuals, the CREB signaling pathway must also be discussed. They observed a study on rodents to drive a correlation between deficient genes and their correlation to humans. They observed this by analyzing the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Threat Of The Patriot Act I Spy After the terrorist attacks of September 11th 2001, an American public was shocked, flabbergasted, and lost for words for the first time since Pearl Harbor. Out of these fears the PATRIOT act was conceived; promising to help stop future terrorist plots the bill was initially met with high praise from the public and media. It was not for another decade that the side effects of the patriot act were revealed to the world. The American public was appalled at the circumvention of their fourth Amendment rights. Still there is a clear divide between those who believe that the National Security Agency Is not violating the constitution and what they are doing is good for the betterment of the country and those who believe that their privacy and undeniable American freedoms were violated in part of the NSA spying with both parties bringing their own views and ideals to the field. The September eleventh attacks were the beginning of the end of privacy for American citizens the PATRIOT act which was signed a month later granted full access to the phones and computers of the people. It took over a decade for the public to become aware of the illegal spying that the NSA had conducted. The NSA spying is a complicated and controversial matter while there have been several judicial courts that have ruled against the spying there has also been just as many cases of the court s finding the spying constitutional. • 7. Essay On Hester Prynne The Greatest Sufferer What makes someone suffer? Does being tormented make you suffer? Is being made fun of by peers suffering? The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is set in an old Puritan society where many people are persecuted for not following religion in any way whether it is a small sin or a large sin. Hester Prynne is the greatest sufferer in the novel because she was publicly humiliated in front of the whole town and has been an outcast for most of her life in that town. Hester has been the greatest sufferer due to Minister Dimmesdale always keeping his secret from the town in that it was in his best interest. Even if they didn t have mud spattered all over them it must have made her feel bad that even the young kids dislike her for her sins. The town hates Hester as can be seen by this, This woman has brought shame upon us all, and ought to die (60). People wanting her dead is extremely harsh for having a baby and not saying who the father is when she is protecting him from the harshness of the crowd as well. Hester has been doing a good thing for Minister Dimmesdale so no one knows that he is the father. Keeping the secret from the crowd is difficult for she is suffering because it would be a lot easier if she told who the father is, but she is keeping it in and it is easier to let things out than keep them in. The Minister is never there for his child which can also impact him by making him depressed. Some could say that the Minister is the greatest sufferer because he always has the leech attached to him sucking his life from him. Minister Dimmesdale beckoning for Hester and Pearl to stand with him, Ye have both been here before, but I was not with you. Come hither once again, and we will stand all three together! (181). • 9. Juvenile Crime Theories Although juvenile crime tends to go unrecognized, it is a major issue in America and happens to go unrecognized. There once was a time when society did not place emphasis on the special needs of juveniles. In most cases children were taking on adult roles to help their families survived, which caused them to struggle with identifying themselves in society. They were also subject to the same consequences that adults received when they did something that was considered morally wrong, forcing them to grow up before their time. There are multiple theories that are used when considering the consequences for an adult offender. However, I personally feel that we should not use the same theories for juvenile crimeunless the crime committed is a Mala In Se Crime, which is considered wrong and inherently evil immoral.Studies have shown that our brains continue to develop into our twenties, which confirms that the thought process that a child and an adult goes through is completely different. The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, by William Shakespeare, depicts many strong and very different portrayals of leadership. One of the leaders, Mark Antony, is a great friend and advisor to Julius Caesar. Antony must deal with the aftermath of Caesar s murder for his own sake and for his country s sake. Mark Antony s strong rhetoric and persuasive speech allow him to be an effective leader. Antony is eloquent and very strong at convincing people to follow his lead. Antony s language persuades the person who murdered his greatest ally, to have complete faith in him. This characteristic of leadership demonstrates Antony s ability to meet his personal goals using his dynamic speech skills. Brutus speaks before Caesar s funeral and mentions that Caesar was ambitious. After Brutus speech, Antony makes an even better speech that refutes all of Brutus points. Antony states that Caesar could not be ambitious because Caesar brought home wealth to Rome, cried for the citizens, and that Caesar refused the crown three times. Antony cries after the speech, and tells that citizens that judgement, thou art fled to brutish beasts (Shakespeare 83). When Antony mentions this to the crowd, he causes the whole crowd to rethink their decision to follow Brutus. Antony uses his words to convey to the crowd that Brutus could not possibly be correct. Antony, crying after his speech, makes the Romans pity him and believe strongly in his words. He furthers his cause by promoting to the crowd that they are a part of Caesar s will. • 11. My Personal And Professional Branding Critical Elements My personal and professional branding are the same: being passionate about not limiting myself by my thoughts or actions, I am here to push the boundaries with those around me. This may sound simple, but there is a lot that goes into it. Building a network of strong, confident people is the key to being successful. My goal is to keep building these professional relationships as well as in my personal life with the help of social media and goal setting. For my professional branding, I am seeking others who are successful in the digital advertising industry. If I am able to connect with these individuals, it will help to make me more successful by learning from them. However, I want our relationship to go both ways, we learn from each other and communicate openly. If I know my client works with a network, I am unable to connect with hopefully they can get me in the door and I can give them the referral business. My personal branding is very similar. I want to surround myself with people who are motivated or have positivity as a goal. If they need encouragement, I am there to help them. The stronger and more successful they become, the better I feel about myself. Someday, they will help to encourage me to never stop being the best I can be. It is give and take. The exposition of The Shroud is short, only one long sentence. This exposition is There was once a mother who had a little boy of seven years old, who was so handsome and lovable that no one could look at him without liking him, and she herself worshipped him above everything in the world (Lines 1 3). • 14. Grief And Pain According to Leming and Dickerson (2011) Grief and pain is a common part of everyone s life and should be expected at one point or another. As I once stated, there comes a time in life where the helper will need to be comforted, the provider will need to be tended to and the strong will need to be strengthened. For me, this time came while I was at the age of 21 years old. After I married, I became with child and shortly found out that I was carrying twins. How could this be, I asked myself. Instantly I was numb, I had no feeling toward anything. Although this was a painful event for me, the real grief did not set in until about 30 days later. I remembered reading that to understand the nature of a loss as it relates to a fetus, we must remember that relationship of a child and parent starts way before the birth (Leming and Dickerson, 2011). Also, they stated that no matter where in the life cycle death occurs, it is never easy for the survivor to make the adjustment. Well, for me losing a baby before it even had a chance to experience what it was like to inhale their first breath of fresh air seemed completely unfair. I found myself upset with God; and felt as if He failed me. In my mind, this could not be happening to me. I am used to helping others get through rough times in life, now I find myself on the opposite end of the spectrum. Instead of comforting others, I needed to be comforted which what Leming and Dickerson (2011) emphasized to their readers. My friends constantly tried to encourage me with Romans 8:28, And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose (King James Version). • 16. Changes due to Urban Renewal in Pyrmont-Ultimo Essay In 1900, Pyrmont was an important port and industrial area, with a population of almost 30 000 people. There was a wide range of industries and services present including wharves, dockyards, warehouses, abattoirs, wool stores, railway yards and even an incinerator for the disposal of Sydney s waste. It was deemed a working class suburb with a predominantly Irish/Catholic population. As the income for Pyrmont was only modest, semi detached cottages were the most common type of housing present. In the 1960 s however, Pyrmont Ultimo was deteriorating at a fast rate and became an unfortunate example of urban decay. The major objectives were to improve the economic efficiency, social equity and environmental sustainability of Australia s cities and Pyrmont Ultimo was a targeted suburb for urban renewal. There were several areas that the program aimed to improve including housing, transport, public parks or open spaces and protection of the environment. Housing: Prior to urban renewal, Pyrmont Ultimo had residents with similar incomes. However to achieve the goal of social equity plans were made for a mixed, high density, medium rise residential area. Approximately 7500 new dwellings have been constructed plus the renovation of 1400 existing dwellings. The aim was to cater for all household types such as families, couples and singles, provide affordable housing for middle to low income earners, provide residential dwellings with waterfront access and with water and city views, protect existing housing, retain a socially diverse residential population which includes all income groups, provide opportunities to live close to places of work and to create a high quality urban environment. The provision of affordable or public housing was an important aspect to consider in the process. Without some sort of intervention to provide this affordable housing, the attractiveness of living close to Sydney s CBD would only be reserved for high income earners as dwellings would be too expensive and rent would be too high. • 17. Importance Of The Sixth Amendment In 1787 the United States constitution was written, two years later the Bill of Rights was added. The Bill of Rights consists of ten amendments which were designed based on the American ideals to ensure that the federal government is not too powerful, and that it would protect the rights of the people or of the state. One of the most important amendments in the Bill of Rights is the sixth amendment, which gives the people the right to enjoy a speedy trial when accused, and it allows the accused person to know the cause of the accusation and who his accuser is. It clearly represents some of the American ideals such as: democracy, opportunity, and equality. The sixth amendment provides more requirements for a fair trial in criminal cases. First, the accused person has the right to enjoy a speedy trial, but that does not mean that the trial will be done within two days, but rather means that, The country or state cannot make the person sit in jail for a very long time, for example 5 years, while they wait for their trial. This would be very unfair to anyone who is not guilty. ; that was mentioned in the website Laws.com. This means that a person cannot wait in jail for committing a crime the rest of his life before proven guilty, that would go against his right of pursuing happiness. The sixth amendment also permits the accused person to know the cause of the accusation and know his accuser, and that leads to the second ideal which is an opportunity or a chance to ... • 18. Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Ulcerative Colitis Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Ulcerative Colitis Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) refers to a variety of conditions in which a chronic immune response and inflammation occur throughout the gastrointestinal tract. Inflammatory Bowel Diseases are triggered by an abnormal response by the body s immune system. In a normal functioning immune system, the cells protect the body from infection. However, in those who are suffering from IBD, the immune system mistakes bacteria, food, and other materials in the intestine as foreign substances and attack the cells in the intestines. As an immune response, the body sends white blood cells to the lining of the intestines, ultimately causing a chronic inflammation and the patient then experiences a variety of symptoms. Symptoms of an IBD can vary, depending on the severity and location of the inflammation. Common symptoms of an inflammatory bowel disease include abdominal pain and cramping that usually disappear after a bowel movement, constipation or difficulty passing stool, diarrhea, fever, gastrointestinal bleeding, gurgling or splashing sound heard over the intestine, nausea and vomiting, pain in the joints, and undesired weight loss. Since these symptoms can indicate a number of possible diseases, it can be difficult to determine the correct diagnoses. The two main types of IBD are Crohn s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, but determining a patient s exact diagnoses can be challenging. Although Crohn s Disease and Ulcerative ... Hosea once again invited the Israelites to repent for their sins for restoration. God promised them healing and blessing in return. Hosea had preached that behavior reveals true faith and love. He brought up the many different kinds of issues because he was attempting to teach the people that faith and community actions are a mirror of each other (Smith, pp. 84). The second part of the covenant lawsuits include a course of accusations of sinfulness (6:7 7:16), an explanation of the punishments the nation will endure (8:1 9:17), and a final message of hope (11:1 11). Theories suggest that the delayed onset of lactose intolerance, in patients who already have IBD s, may arise as secondary lactose intolerance but only as a byproduct of the IBD. This begs the question of if the prevalence of an IBD predisposes that same person to lactose intolerance and if so, what are the drivers that allow this to happen? Those who are lactose intolerant also have diminishes levels of lactase, the small intestinal enzyme responsible for the catalysis of lactose. Dietary supplementation of the lactase enzyme has, in some cases, proven to rectify the symptoms of lactose intolerance. During infancy the vast majority of humans have the ability to digest and catabolize lactose into glucose and galactose via the lactase enzyme. This catabolic capability is vital for newborn mammals, given that their primary source of nutrition comes from their mother s milk. During the weaning period, when children cease to use milk as a primary source of nutrition, the production of the lactase enzyme severely deteriorates and eventually leads to the inability to catabolize lactose. While this may be the natural progression of the expression of the lactase enzyme, there remains a large, predominantly western population that maintains a steady production of lactase, those individuals are known as lactase persistent (Baumgart, et al.). Lactase Persistence Causes: Lactase persistence has been strongly suggested to be a function of genetic causes and its inheritance occurs in an autosomal recessive manner. • 23. British Colonial Identity Between 1607 and 1754, many British North American colonies were formed. Numerous colonists migrated to the New World seeking profit. One thing that many of these colonists had in common was that they still felt British at heart. However, as the colonists became more set in their own ways, their resentment of English rule grew. Eventually, the British American colonists created a self identity distinct from that of the citizens of England. Environmental factors like the difference in land and political factors like the governmental structure contributed to a colonial identity that would one day lead to the colonial break with England. Environmental factors, especially the vast difference in landscape between North America and the British Isles, as well as the profit which could be earned from the land were pivotal in the colonists ultimate decision to break away from England. The South had fertile soil that allowed crops to flourish. This allowed the colonists to create an economy independent from that of Britain. In addition, the plentiful land made it easier for colonists to own territory. In the North, where there was less ideal farmland for traditional agriculture, the colonists succeeded at trades, such as timber, fishing, and shipbuilding. These people had a more diversified economy that further fueled the separation economically from England. Compare And Contrast The American And Mary Wigman Isadora Duncan and Mary Wigman both started with the same idea of dancing, and how they should incorporate human movement instead of ballet that was more unnatural to the body. Even though they had a similar thought about modern dance, they had one thing that made them very different, which was their choreography. Duncan pieces were lively and upbeat, and Wigmans were dark and mysterious. They both approached modern dancethrough a different eye. Even if they lived in two different parts of the world, The American, as represented by Isadora Duncan, and the German, as represented by Mary Wigman, (Cass 247), the world would then get two different choreographers that were evolving at the same time in history, which impacted the dance history.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Duncan was more for students and anyone around her to make their own movements, she didn t really want to make up her own technique but she wanted dancers to be creative and find what they found beautiful. I guess you can see Duncan s approach in what she wanted, was to see the dancer of the future. Although, she didn t have any recorded choreography it was said that after the loss of her children her dances became sad and not as impressive. But if I have to answer how Duncan approached her own choreography I would say, to be free and to dance what one feels. Like mentioned by Irma Duncan in the book by The Technique of Isadora Duncan, Isadora Duncan has said, that her dance was not of the theater, but an expression of life, and that she did not train the pupils of her school for the stage, (ix). Wigman, also believed that expression was the key to make a good choreography but Wigmans pieces where more stable and concrete. • 32. Limitations Of Racist Speech Limits on Racist Speech in Public Contexts When the first amendment is brought up, one of the first things that comes to mind is free speech. Even though we don t give it much thought, our free speech does have limits. The more obvious limits such as knowing that you can t threaten people or shout Fire! in a crowded space make sense because it s easy to see how they cause direct harm. These general limits are important in order to ensure a safe and peaceful society, but when it comes to voicing prejudice views, it becomes difficult to determine what should and should not be restricted by the first amendment. After all, when negative and hurtful opinions are directed at a specific group of people, it becomes hard to see how protecting them could be a good thing. The important thing to remember is that when sharing these views becomes harmful and leads to harassment, it is no longer protected under the first amendment. However, everyone sees things differently, so drawing the line between what is just offensive and harassment needs to be determined and treated on a case by case basis. This will not only allow us to come to a solution for these individual problems, but it leaves room for discussion which will help to combat the root cause of prejudice. While trying to think of ways to regulate racist speech, we might think that an easy solution would be to place a ban on racist speech altogether, but this quickly becomes problematic. Banning specific opinions and beliefs would no longer make our speech free, and even when people are permitted to share wrong or offensive opinions, protecting free speech still has more potential benefit than harm. This gives us the right to speak out against our government when it is doing something we disagree with, but it also allows people to share their racist views. If we want to continue to reap the benefits, we also have to accept that racist speech is a part of free speech, thus protected under the first amendment. This is not the same thing as saying that racist speech should be unregulated; there are regulations for when hate speech becomes harmful, but the government shouldn t and isn t responsible for regulating it. Racial Stereotypes Of Asian-Americans Today, when society talks about diversity, often times, Asian Americans are brought into the conversation and are talked about as highly looked up to individuals, but they haven t always been this way. On television, many times, Asian Americans are represented as nerdy and socially incapable/awkward , Asian American males are mostly shown as being weak and stereotypically awkward, while Asian American females are either shown as exotic or also stereotypically awkward and nerdy, as stated by Takaki in his book Strangers from a Different Shore on page 479, Hopeful a college education can help them [the students] overcome racial obstacles, they realize the need to be serious about their studies. But white college students complain: Asian students are nerds. This very stereotype betrays nervousness fears that Asian American students are raising class grade curves. Though, these representations do only account for the three most popular Asian ethnic groups: Japanese, Chinese and Korean. The other Asian ethnic groups are mostly invisible to society, some groups, such as the Vietnamese Americans and the Hmong Americans, are known for their population size. These groups are also the groups that tend to live in areas that are largely populated with the same race, therefore, congregating to one area. A lot of times, I ve realized from personal experience, that when people realize that I am Asian, they tend to compare me with the stereotypes that are generally associated with being Asian American. Often, I am told that I am tall for being Asian as the stereotypes say that Asians females generally are shorter in stature and are petite with light skin and pin straight black hair. On occasion, I am told that I look more Hawaiian than I do Asian due to my darker skin and bigger build. Though, I do hear a lot of comments regarding my eyes and about how little they are. These experiences have made me believe that the role that Asian Americans play in the race conversation now is that when the conversation turns to Asian America, people automatically look towards stereotypes along with looking at certain traditional cultures often stating things such as, I really like Asian foods or, I think that kimonos are ... • 36. Descriptive Essay On Campus Iowa State University offers a large campus. The campus itself entirely is around the size of my hometown. I have lived on campus for a few weeks now, and I know most of the campus, yet spend most of my time in my dorm. Whenever I am not in my dorm or in class though, I often find myself wandering around campus. When wandering around campus I usually look for the best spots for me just in case I want to sit around and relax. Of my favorite spots to visit, they are closer and very appealing to see. They however are also very popular places to visit, so many students visit them. What I mean by closer, is that these places are not too far away from my dorm on campus. I live in the Wilson Hall dormitory, known as one of the Towers, and it is quite far from the main campus. Seeing as I walk everyday to and from the main campus to and from my dorm, I tend to walk the same route, as to shorten the walk time it takes and be familiar with the area. On days I walk to my favorite spot, which is the second concrete benchnext to the Campanile, and I just sit there for hours and relax. Wilson Hall s dining hall is called Storms, and is located maybe 80 100 yards North of Wilson. As I leave through the North East exit of Wilson Hall, I cross the diagonal sidewalk running from Wilson to Storm s East Entrance/Exit. I tend to eat supper at Storms, and as I exit through the same entrance, I leave and grab an apple to eat along the way heading to the Campanile. I walk up Welch Street, ... This can be seen as one reads Pride and Prejudice and the cruel treatment in society and the love that drifts through seems like a clichГ©, but the story is still its own book. b.Summary: With news of a wealthy family coming to town, the Bennet family sets their minds to get at least one of their five daughters married. Upon going to visit the wealthy Bingleys, Jane, the eldest daughter, gets sick in the rain and must stay at their house in Netherfield under the care of her family s second oldest daughter, Elizabeth. This is not only evidence of her prejudice, but shows the difference on how males and females are viewed, for what is okay for one to do may not be for the other. d.Towards the end, the happy mood starts to come out as love is formed. After their fight when Mr. Darcy proposed, Elizabeth notices how he has fixed the quirks she pointed out, which Austen uses as a way to lighten the tone of the novel and end it on a happier note. e.Although their views may have been very harsh and negative in the beginning, both Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy leave the novel with very little prejudice and only good pride, but the reader has the same feelings when they close the ... CASE STUDY IMPACT OF THE DEEPWATER HORIZON OIL SPILL IN THE GULF OF MEXICO ON THE LOCAL ENVIRONMENT INTRODUCTION The Gulf of Mexico covers an area of 600,000 square miles and is located between Mexico, Cuba and the United States (Tunell, 2011). Primary pollutants detected consisted mostly of hydrocarbons that were emitted into the atmosphere from evaporated or burned oil on the water surface, and nitrogen oxides, emitted by both the flaring of the natural gas and from the clean up processes close near the spill site. Once in the atmosphere, these compounds photochemically reacted to produce secondary pollutants such as Ozone and peroxacetyl nitrates (PANs) (Middlebrook et al., 2011). Other pollutants were also detected, such as secondary organic aerosols (SOA), a product of intermediate volatile organic compounds, and soot particles, black carbon and carbon monoxide from in situ burning of oil or from the cleanup processes (Gouw et al., 2011). According to EPA (2016), air pollutants, especially fine particles ( 2.5Ојm), can cause health risks to respiratory systems of both humans and animals. These pollutants can contribute to the formation of acid rain, damage vegetation, deplete nutrients in soil, contribute to cloud formation and affect climate, and reduce visibility.
