MOTIVATION ‘’ Hope is a good thing- maybe the best thing And good things never die.’’ Andy Duphrene
What is motivation? An inner state (either a need or desire) that energizes & directs us and keeps us moving toward our goals. _ Why we do and what we do.
‘’ Bıg Ideas’’ about Motivation… Idea 1-) Motivation is not a quality that resides solely in the student. Instead, motivation is a result of the interaction between the students and his or her learning environment.
‘’ Bıg Ideas’’ about Motivation… Idea 2- ) As students become older, their desire to protect and to promote their self-image becomes significiantly more important in determining motivational level.
How to motivate students… Extrinsic Motivation comes from outside an individual. The motivating factors; _awards, money, and praise.
How to motivate students… Intrinsic Motivation comes from within the individual. the environment of the learning process itself. a desire to make themselves feel better.
How the Teachers Motivates the Students… Some students seem naturally enthusiastic about learning, but many need-or expect-their instructors to inspire, challenge, and stimulate them: "Effective learning in the classroom depends on the teacher's ability ... to maintain the interest that brought students to the course in the first place" (Ericksen, 1978, p. 3). Whatever level of motivation your students bring to the classroom will be transformed, for better or worse, by what happens in that classroom.
General Strategies Capitalize on students’ existing needs. Make students active participants in learning. Ask students to analyze what makes their classes more or less motivating.
Incorparate Motivational Instructional Behaviors Help students set achievable goals for themselves. Tell students what they need to do to succed in your course. Avoid creating intense competation among students. Be enthusiastic about your subject.
Structure the Course to Motivate Students… Work from students’ strengths and interests. When possible, let students have some say in choosing what will be studied. Increasing the difficulty of the material as the semester progresses. Vary your teaching methods.
De-emphasize Grades Emphasize mastery and learning rather than grades. Design tests that encourage the kind of learning you want students to achieve. Avoid using grades as threats.
Respond the Students’ Work Give students feedback as quickly as possible. Reward success. Introduce students to the good work done by peers. Be specific when giving negative feedback. Avoid demeaning comments.
In order to increase motivation teachers use Whiteboard… Advantages of Whiteboards: Whiteboards are touch sensitive. More student/teacher interaction. More hands/on activities. More students participation. More visual learning for students. Students are more engaged.
Enhancement of Learning Students believe they learn better with whiteboard. Touching it affects students learning in a positive way. Whiteboards can help teachers with organization .
Whiteboard and Participation With Whiteboards; Whiteboards allow more visual learning which to more engagement. More ‘hands on’ opportunuties. Without Whiteboards ; Students are not motivated. Ss can become bored and off tasks. There is less chances for visual and hands on learning for students.
Student Achievement Research shows that students have increase attention level when whiteboard are used. Studies show that whiteboard may help increase standardized test score.
Keep your student motivated!!! ‘’ If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn.’’
To Sum Up.. Research has shown that good everyday teaching practices can do more to counter student apathy than special efforts to attack motivation directly (Ericksen, 1978). Most students respond positively to a well-organized course taught by an enthusiastic instructor who has a genuine interest in students and what they learn. Thus activities you undertake to promote learning will also enhance students' motivation.
