Mother Teresa was born in 1910 in Skopje, Macedonia. She founded the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, India, in 1950, where she cared for the poor and dying without distinction of religion or creed. Her missionaries now run hospices and homes for people with HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis in over 100 countries. Mother Teresa received the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize for her humanitarian work and died in 1997 at age 87 in Calcutta. She is remembered for her compassionate care of India's poor and sick.
