Zora Neale Hurston was born in 1891 in Alabama and showed a bright and independent spirit from a young age, encouraging her mother to "jump to the sun." After her mother's death and leaving her father's home at age 13, Hurston traveled with a theatrical troupe before graduating high school in Baltimore. Though she struggled financially at times, Hurston wrote numerous short stories and books throughout her life, telling folk stories to children, but did not achieve fame until after her death in 1960 when Alice Walker championed her work.
