John Wood founded Room to Read in 1999 to address illiteracy in developing countries by building schools and libraries. His project has since partnered with communities in 6 countries to construct 765 schools and 92 libraries, providing educational opportunities for thousands of children. Kyle Zimmer co-founded First Book in 1992 after realizing underprivileged children in the US lacked access to books. First Book has since distributed over 135 million books to 32 million low-income American children and helped overcome illiteracy. Both organizations aim to improve literacy and educational resources worldwide.
