Ida B. Wells was born into slavery in 1862 in Mississippi. She became an influential activist and journalist, investigating and exposing the lynching of African Americans in the post-Reconstruction South. She co-owned and edited influential black newspapers. Wells fought against lynching and helped establish several civil rights organizations. She had four children with her husband Ferdinand Barnett and lived an impactful life advocating for civil rights before passing away in 1931.
