Mother Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in 1910 in Macedonia. She joined the Sisters of Loreto order and took the name Sister Teresa. In 1950 she experienced a calling to help the poor in Calcutta, India and founded the Missionaries of Charity. Over the following decades she helped establish hospices and community centers around the world. In 1979 she received the Nobel Peace Prize for her humanitarian work. Mother Teresa passed away in 1997 but her Missionaries of Charity continue her work of serving the poor and sick.
