Moshi Moshi Records
By Maisie and Zoe
Facts
• Moshi Moshi Records is an independent record
label who have links with Universal and have over
70 signed artists to their label. The label was
founded in 1998 by Adrian Pike, Michael
McClatchey and Stephen Bass and is based in
London. It is named after the Japanese telephone
greeting “moshi moshi”, which translates to hello.
Signed Artists
• Florence And The Machine are signed to Moshi
Moshi Records through a 360 degree business
rule, and although she is now signed to universal,
Moshi Moshi still get a cut of all the profits she
makes. The same partnership occurs with both
Disclosure and Kate Nash. These are three most
successful artists that Moshi Moshi have
produced.
Technology
• On Moshi Moshi’s Official website, they
distribute the music and merchandise
within the company, therefore they don’t
have to rely on other music stores to
distribute, keeping the profits within the
system.
• Moshi Moshi distribute their signed artists not
only through their own website, but through
iTunes as well. However on iTunes, Moshi Moshi
charge £1 more than they do on their website. This
allows them to pay iTunes as well as keep a
reasonable profit for each track or album sold.
This demonstrates how they are branching out to
a wider audience through different technologies.
Merchandise
• They sell their artists
albums and tracks
along with company
merchandise.
Production Process
• Moshi Moshi’s releases are distributed in the UK
via Brighton's Republic of Music but the label has
a licensing arrangement with Co-operative Music
who provide distribution, marketing and promo
throughout Europe, Japan and Australia, meaning
their acts are getting released in most major
territories. Currently in the US the label has no set
deal but does sell digitally via State51.
Popularity
• Last year saw Moshi Moshi mark their tenth
anniversary with a sold out show at Matter
nightclub at the O2 in London with Hot Chip,
Florence and The Machine, Kate Nash, Tilly and
the Wall, The Mae Shi, Slow Club, James Yuill and
The Wave Pictures all playing live. This shows
that they are still in touch with their original
artists.
