Shah Waliullah was an 18th century Islamic scholar from India who helped spur a religious regeneration during a time when Islam in South Asia was declining. He was born in 1703 and received an education in subjects like the Quran, Hadith, mathematics, literature and philosophy. At age 23 he performed the pilgrimage to Mecca where he studied Hadith under a teacher and was given permission to teach Hadith upon his return to India. Through his teachings, Shah Waliullah helped prevent the expected religious disintegration that was feared during the political instability of the time.
