Although immigration and immigrant populations have become increasingly important foci in
public health research and practice, a social determinants of health approach has seldom been
applied in this area. Global patterns of morbidity and mortality follow inequities rooted in
societal, political, and economic conditions produced and reproduced by social structures,
policies, and institutions. The lack of dialogue between these two profoundly related
phenomena—social determinants of health and immigration—has resulted in missed
opportunities for public health research, practice, and policy work. In this article, we discuss
primary frameworks used in recent public health literature on the health of immigrant
populations, note gaps in this literature, and argue for a broader examination of immigration as
both socially determined and a social determinant of health. We discuss priorities for future
research and policy to understand more fully and respond appropriately to the health of the
populations affected by this global phenomenon.

socially determined structures among immigrant populations in the United States. The study
identifies ways in which immigrants health outcomes are based on biases due to using

Background. Community-based health workers (CBHWs) are frontline
public health workers who are trusted members of the community they
serve. Recently, considerable attention has been drawn to CBHWs in pro-
moting healthy behaviors and health outcomes among vulnerable pop-
ulations who often face health inequities.
Objectives. We performed a systematic review to synthesize evidence
concerning the types of CBHW interventions, the qualification and
characteristics of CBHWs, and patient outcomes and cost-effectiveness
of such interventions in vulnerable populations with chronic, non-
communicable conditions.
Search methods. We undertook 4 electronic database searches—PubMed,
EMBASE, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, and
Cochrane—and hand searched reference collections to identify randomized
controlled trials published in English before August 2014.
Selection. We screened a total of 934 unique citations initially for titles
and abstracts. Two reviewers then independently evaluated 166 full-
text articles that were passed onto review processes. Sixty-one studies
and 6 companion articles (e.g., cost-effectiveness analysis) met eligi-
bility criteria for inclusion.
Data collection and analysis. Four trained research assistants extracted
data by using a standardized data extraction form developed by the
authors. Subsequently, an independent research assistant reviewed
extracted data to check accuracy. Discrepancies were resolved through
discussions among the study team members. Each study was evaluated
for its quality by 2 research assistants who extracted relevant study
information. Interrater agreement rates ranged from 61% to 91% (av-
erage 86%). Any discrepancies in terms of quality rating were resolved
through team discussions.
Main results. All but 4 studies were conducted in the United States.
The 2 most common areas for CBHW interventions were cancer pre-
vention (n = 30) and cardiovascular disease risk reduction (n = 26). The
roles assumed by CBHWs included health education (n = 48), counseling
(n = 36), navigation assistance (n = 21), case management (n = 4), social
services (n = 7), and social support (n = 18). Fifty-three studies provided
information regarding CBHW training, yet CBHW competency evalua-
tion (n = 9) and supervision procedures (n = 24) were largely under-
reported. The length and duration of CBHW training ranged from 4
hours to 240 hours with an average of 41.3 hours (median: 16.5 hours) in

In a bid to control the prevalence of diabetes among the African Americans, it is important to examine a number of attributes of culture that can empower a person towards changing a behavior. The factors may be positive, existential, and negative. Existential factors may be not harmful but need to be acknowledged. The importance of a family cannot be ignored especially because of the support they provide to diabetic patients. Family is therefore a positive cultural value which will assist in managing diabetes disease. This paper therefore seeks to address how each of the PEN-3 model’s three factors within the dimension of cultural empowerment applies to the African American group.
It is important to explore by identifying several cultural beliefs and practices that are positive, existential and negative. Positive factors are likely to lead to an improvement by reducing the prevalence of diabetes among the African Americans. Existential factors are existing cultural values and beliefs that may have no harmful health consequences. Cultural practices that may act as barriers in controlling the prevalence of diabetes among the African Americans are the negative factors. Example of these negative practices includes poor nutrition leading to obesity.
Positive Factors
The positive factors which will influence management and control of diabetes among the African Americans include spirituality and family. For example, talking about a family affair with diabetes will make a great impact in controlling diabetes among the African Americans. This is because it will create awareness of how to handle and deal with diabetes. Spirituality will have a positive impact in controlling the prevalence of diabetes among the African Americans. African Americans who have spiritual faith are likely to engage in activities which will reduce the prevalence of the disease.
Existential Factors
Existential factors include faith healing. A belief in faith healing is a factor which is likely to reduction in prevalence of diabetes among the African Americans. Individuals who are religious are likely to visit religious leaders to seek healing and intervention. Many individuals confess that they got healed after being prayed for by the Pastors and other religious leaders. This is attributed to believing in faith healing.
Negative Factors
Consumption of “comfort foods” is common in the diet of the African Americans. These foods contain high fat, sugar, and calorie contents. Example of negative cultural factors includes unhealthy traditional foods. Poor nutrition among the African Americans is more l.

There has been increased concern among policy makers, scientists and communities that health is greatly affected by a number of factors that occur in a person’s lifetime and in multi levels. Prevention is sententious to curb occurrence of any disease within the population, and it has to come first even if access to quality healthcare services is provided. To adequately promote health and prevent diseases, certain policies and factors need to be addressed mostly factors that are related to health behaviors.
Social psychology is all about understanding individuals’ behavior specifically in a social setting. Basically, social psychology focuses on factors that influence people to behave in certain ways in presence of others. The two greatest contributors in the field of social psychology were Allport (1920) and Bandura (1963). To begin with, according to Allport; he argued that the interaction of individuals with others or the presence of social groups can encourage the development of certain behaviors (Kassin, 2014). This is what Allport referred to as social facilitation, in his research he identified that an audience will facilitate the performance of an actor in a well learnt and understood task; however the performance of the same actor will decrease in performance on difficult tasks which are newly learnt, and this is contributed by social inhibition. The second contributor in the field of social psychology is Bandura (1963), in his work he developed a notion that behavior in the social world could be possibly modeled, and this is what he referred to as social learning theory. He gave his explanation with three groups of children who were watching a video where in the video an adult showed aggressiveness towards a “bobo doll” and the adults who displayed such behavior were awarded by another adult or were just punished. Therefore Bandura found that children who saw the adult being rewarded were found to be more likely to imitate that adult’s behavior.
Certain theories plays important roles in health assessment, and a theory is defined as a collection of concepts in specific area of concern or interest in the world that need explanations, intervening and prediction. Theories need to be backed up with evidence that tend to explain why things will happen in relation to current situations, and followed with some actions to turn situations in certain desirable ways. Health assessment can be defined as a plan of care that recognizes specific person’s health needs and how such needs will be addressed by healthcare system or any other health institutions (Jarvis, 2008). The poster suggests making medical and biological fields more holistic by applying theoretical biomedical anthropological ideas to applied medical practice, such as an upstream approach to health and addressing why basic needs aren't being met. BACKGROUND: The American Cancer Society (ACS), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Cancer
Institute (NCI), and the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR) collaborate to provide annual updates
on cancer occurrence and trends in the United States. METHODS: Incidence data were obtained from the CDC-funded and NCI-
funded population-based cancer registry programs and compiled by NAACCR. Data on cancer deaths were obtained from the
National Center for Health Statistics National Vital Statistics System. Trends in age-standardized incidence and death rates for all can-
cers combined and for the leading cancer types by sex, race, and ethnicity were estimated by joinpoint analysis and expressed as the
annual percent change. Stage distribution and 5-year survival by stage at diagnosis were calculated for breast cancer, colon and rec-
tum (colorectal) cancer, lung and bronchus cancer, and melanoma of the skin. RESULTS: Overall cancer incidence rates from 2008 to
2014 decreased by 2.2% per year among men but were stable among women. Overall cancer death rates from 1999 to 2015
decreased by 1.8% per year among men and by 1.4% per year among women. Among men, incidence rates during the most recent 5-
year period (2010-2014) decreased for 7 of the 17 most common cancer types, and death rates (2011-2015) decreased for 11 of the 18
most common types. Among women, incidence rates declined for 7 of the 18 most common cancers, and death rates declined for 14
of the 20 most common cancers. Death rates decreased for cancer sites, including lung and bronchus (men and women), colorectal
(men and women), female breast, and prostate. Death rates increased for cancers of the liver (men and women); pancreas (men and
women); brain and other nervous system (men and women); oral cavity and pharynx (men only); soft tissue, including heart (men
only); nonmelanoma skin (men only); and uterus. Incidence and death rates were higher among men than among women for all racial
and ethnic groups. For all cancer sites combined, black men and white women had the highest incidence rates compared with other
racial groups, and black men and black women had the highest death rates compared with other racial groups. Non-Hispanic men
and women had higher incidence and mortality rates than those of Hispanic ethnicity. Five-year survival for cases diagnosed from
2007 through 2013 ranged from 100% (stage I) to 26.5% (stage IV) for female breast cancer, from 88.1% (stage I) to 12.6% (stage IV)
for colorectal cancer, from 55.

According to the article by F. Althaus, the development in the American health system
has continuously transformed the health sector and the delivery environment among expectant
mothers. When compared to the previous era, expectant White-American mothers are delivering
safely, specifically those who live in states where the quality of health infrastructure and services
are high. Unfortunately, though, the population of people of color’s maternal mortality rate is
increasingly reporting the highest in minority communities due to the low quality of health
infrastructure and services in their living environments. Althaus presents that both maternal and

the discussion to address the long history of birth oppression among Black mothers and the
strategies that have been applied to suppress these oppressions. The author outlines that the
Black, marginalized, population contributes significantly to the American ecosystem. Therefore,

federal government sees as a must do instead of coming up with illegal family planning
approaches with a hidden agendas. It is imperative that equity prevails for all races during

The above article presents information on genetics and one’s surroundings as the factors
that interplay and produce the wellness of the population within a given place. The article
discusses parental race differences and vulnerabilities of infant mortality rates through studying
how genes and a person’s environment could shape these perinatal vulnerabilities. El Sayed
found that the dynamic of child deaths continue to increase among the black community with
said improvement in the health sector impacting only the white population. Instead of genetics
being the main impact on child deaths, it is shown that race-driven prejudice and structural
socio-economic opportunities of social surroundings is a great explanation of why there are
racial differences in infant mortality rates. Despite these factors being proven to be contributing
to the number of deaths among infants, the government does little to address the associated risk
factors. The author recommends that the federal government could mitigate the social factors and
introduce more diverse healthcare providers to promote wellness among Black-American

Summary
This is a paper describing the results of an analytical research project, worth 25% of your total grade.
