How are the main characters represented?
The man is represented as strong and confident; this is shown through a mid-shot of him and the
woman. When they are sat in the back of a vehicle he is smiling at her sat looking comfortable,
whereas the woman hasn’t really got a smile on her face and is cuddled into the man as if she needs
that comfort, therefore she is represented as a weak and vulnerable woman who needs this man
beside her for comfort.
How is the setting and background represented?
While they are in the vehicle the background shows quite a busy atmosphere this represents that its
busy and something is going to happen. When they get out the vehicle there is a hospital in the
background with a busy road this also adds to the narrative and represents that something is going
to happen. When she is in the hospital the colours are all quite neutral and her facial expressions
aren’t very happy, this sets a tense mood and atmosphere, as we do not know what is going and it
builds tension. When the man is sat outside the café this background is quite bright and happy this
represents he is very happy and is in a good mood, as the atmosphere is set up to be relaxed and
happy in contrast to the other settings. However the incidental music over this scene represents
them both as quite worried waiting for the results.
What genre is it? Why?
Issue based/romance drama, because it’s about a man and woman who has just been married but
the woman is ill and is awaiting news. It is all based on them and their lives.
What editing features do you notice within the clip?
Parallel cut- In this clip there is a parallel cut when the woman is in the hospital and the man
is in the café. This represents that this is going on at the same time. This hospital is quite
dark and brown colours whereas the café is quite contrasting as it was a lot brighter.
Music – within this clip music is used to create tension and the mood, there is a lot of
incidental and non-diegetic music which is quite tense and sets a chilling atmosphere and
sets up a tense mood that suggests something serious is going to happen.
Sound effects – also in this clip, sound effects are used to exaggerate the action. When the
woman gets ran over, the volume of the car horns have been increased, this emphasises the
tension that the woman is hurt.
