Question2:
How does your media product represent particular
social groups?
As human being it’s only normal for us to class and group people into different
social groups depending on how we see them, how they go about their things, what
and how they do their business and how they represent themselves through their
language and appearance.
For example, if you were to see a bunch of ladies horseback riding with their clean
up tight uniforms drinking tea afterwards the first thing that comes to mind is that
they all must clearly be very wealthy and must be in the higher ends of social
groups. We think that because firstly seeing people horseback riding isn’t something
people do on a regular basis and secondly they are dressed in correct uniform
drinking tea. But if you were to come across a set of people who are smoking, use
inappropriate language and dress up very badly you would think otherwise. You
would feel that they are in the lower parts of the social groups because they are
being portrayed in not the best of way.
How do these social groups come across?
The social group of my film opening comes across as the lower middle class, I say
this simply because of how both the characters of the movie and the setting are
being shown in the film. The basketball court within the sports hall is where the film
was set in, the court isn’t as clean or well-arranged as a normal basketball court.
Instead you’ll be able to see things like bags and clothes on benches, the net ripped
and random things lying around or the court itself in bad conditions; those would be
things you are most likely to see in an outside court that everyone uses.
Then the way the actors were dressed, one of them was dressed in uniform while the
other wasn’t. The fact that one of them wasn’t dressed in uniform suggest that he
might be of the lower middle class. Lastly there were bits of violence between both
characters over something little, this also made the film seem a bit low on middle
class.
I would say that there were some stereotypes being met within the film opening such
as both the actors being indulged in a little physical violence, stereotypically
speaking black people tend to be more violent than any other race, when it comes to
a lot of things, especially sport (this was a negative representation of them). Another
stereotype being met was that they are very good at basketball.
How did you show what class each character was in?
I made the one of the main characters wear a complete uniform so as to make it
clear that he was in a much higher class of social groups compared to the other
actor who wasn’t wearing complete uniform. I made Matthew appear to the
audience as a laid back kind of person at the beginning of the film opening by
making him appear not to be serious when he was with Imisi. I purposely created
the scene in which Imisi got to the point in which he had to push Matthew; this
shows to the audience that he was a slightly violent person that would normally
belong in the lower class of social groups.
Technical Choices
Some of thetechnicalchoices thatI have made is thetype that I havedecided
to play in the film opening, thesound is deep, dark and thrilling. I purposely
put this in the film opening becausenot only does this show themood in
which both actors (especially Imisi) feel it also makes this particularpoint in
time very dramatic and intense.
As for thelighting I’veused various lighting styles such as low key and high
key lighting toshowtimes of intensity and light moods.
Then as for the reasons for slow-motion effects what they do is they also add
to the intensity and drama tosome scenes.

Question 2 evaluation

  • 1. Question2: How does your media product represent particular social groups? As human being it’s only normal for us to class and group people into different social groups depending on how we see them, how they go about their things, what and how they do their business and how they represent themselves through their language and appearance. For example, if you were to see a bunch of ladies horseback riding with their clean up tight uniforms drinking tea afterwards the first thing that comes to mind is that they all must clearly be very wealthy and must be in the higher ends of social groups. We think that because firstly seeing people horseback riding isn’t something people do on a regular basis and secondly they are dressed in correct uniform drinking tea. But if you were to come across a set of people who are smoking, use inappropriate language and dress up very badly you would think otherwise. You would feel that they are in the lower parts of the social groups because they are being portrayed in not the best of way. How do these social groups come across? The social group of my film opening comes across as the lower middle class, I say this simply because of how both the characters of the movie and the setting are being shown in the film. The basketball court within the sports hall is where the film was set in, the court isn’t as clean or well-arranged as a normal basketball court. Instead you’ll be able to see things like bags and clothes on benches, the net ripped and random things lying around or the court itself in bad conditions; those would be things you are most likely to see in an outside court that everyone uses. Then the way the actors were dressed, one of them was dressed in uniform while the other wasn’t. The fact that one of them wasn’t dressed in uniform suggest that he might be of the lower middle class. Lastly there were bits of violence between both
  • 2. characters over something little, this also made the film seem a bit low on middle class. I would say that there were some stereotypes being met within the film opening such as both the actors being indulged in a little physical violence, stereotypically speaking black people tend to be more violent than any other race, when it comes to a lot of things, especially sport (this was a negative representation of them). Another stereotype being met was that they are very good at basketball. How did you show what class each character was in? I made the one of the main characters wear a complete uniform so as to make it clear that he was in a much higher class of social groups compared to the other actor who wasn’t wearing complete uniform. I made Matthew appear to the audience as a laid back kind of person at the beginning of the film opening by making him appear not to be serious when he was with Imisi. I purposely created the scene in which Imisi got to the point in which he had to push Matthew; this shows to the audience that he was a slightly violent person that would normally belong in the lower class of social groups. Technical Choices Some of thetechnicalchoices thatI have made is thetype that I havedecided to play in the film opening, thesound is deep, dark and thrilling. I purposely put this in the film opening becausenot only does this show themood in which both actors (especially Imisi) feel it also makes this particularpoint in time very dramatic and intense. As for thelighting I’veused various lighting styles such as low key and high key lighting toshowtimes of intensity and light moods. Then as for the reasons for slow-motion effects what they do is they also add to the intensity and drama tosome scenes.
