THE ROLE OF THE MEDIA IN DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY
INSTRUCTOR: MONETTE T. ROSELLO
The media must make sure that it:
 Is professional at all times
 Provides unbiased account of events
 Analyses and understands what is in the public’s interest
 Informs citizens about issues that affects their lives
 Represents different views and voices
 Is objective
 Make sure that it does good research
 Ensures that reports are not biased
 Ensures reporters are adequately trained
 Accommodates all citizens interests equally
 Is accessible
 Self-monitors to make sure that it is responsible, fair and honest
The extent to which media reflects a
democratic society:
 Topics covered
 Should cover a wide spectrum of interests and relevance catering to all citizens;
 Are determined by the specific target market, which may not necessarily ne the majority of
citizens
 Positions taken by editors
 Should be unbiased
 Should aim to provide news that is in the public interest
 Space allocated to topics
 Should ensure that the spectrum of interests of all citizens is addressed.
 If topic is sensational then the media owner is interested in selling the product
 If topic is factual reporting or relevant issues the media owner is truly concerned with
informing their target market and take their democratic responsibility seriously
The extent to which media reflects a
democratic society:
 Geographical distribution
 Infrastructure (roads, electricity and communication networks)
 Poverty
 Education (literacy levels)
 Language barriers
 Geographical position (urban or rural)
Freedom of Expression
Freedom of Expression
Part of the foundation of any
democracy
Essential for the health of a
democracy
Educates the public, allowing them
to make informed decisions
Acts a a watchdog
Ensures all electives stick to their
oath of office
Monitors the actions of elected
representatives
Ensure electives carry out the
wishes of those who put them there
Limitations
Cannot incite imminent violence
Cannot be used for propaganda for
war
Cannot advocate hate based on
race, ethnicity, gender or religion
A Basic Human Right

 Read article: The Role of Media in a Democracy (10 minutes)
Homework:
 Write a news article on the security and safety concern of the parents and
guardians of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School students;
 Include feedback/reactions from the security group and members of the
administration
 Article must be typed in a short bond paper and must be more than 150 words;
 To be submitted on June 30, 2017
 On Friday, June 30, 2017, 10 random students will be asked to deliver a live report
of their homework.
