The distinction between censorship of print and electronic media is becoming increasingly irrelevant
The media cannot assume that all viewers are responsible for the content they consume
The mass media play a key role in broadcasting values and cultures to almost everywhere in the world
The media is often insensitive and irresponsible
The media reflects and projects the view of minority elite, which controls it

Understanding Media - Class 7 Civics (Social Studies)rianna chaturvedi
In mass communication, media are the communication outlets or tools used to store and deliver information or data.[1][2] The term refers to components of the mass media communications industry, such as print media, publishing, the news media, photography, cinema, broadcasting (radio and television), digital media, and advertising.[3]
The development of early writing and paper enabling longer-distance communication systems such as mail, including in the Persian Empire (Chapar Khaneh and Angarium) and Roman Empire, can be interpreted as early forms of media.[4] Writers such as Howard Rheingold have framed early forms of human communication, such as the Lascaux cave paintings and early writing, as early forms of media.[5] Another framing of the history of media starts with the Chauvet Cave paintings and continues with other ways to carry human communication beyond the short range of voice: smoke signals, trail markers, and sculpture.[6]
The term media in its modern application relating to communication channels was first used by Canadian communications theorist Marshall McLuhan, who stated in Counterblast (1954): "The media are not toys; they should not be in the hands of Mother Goose and Peter Pan executives. They can be entrusted only to new artists because they are art forms." By the mid-1960s, the term had spread to general use in North America and the United Kingdom. The phrase mass media (according to H.L. Mencken) was used as early as 1923 in the United States.[7][8]
The term medium (the singular form of media) is defined as "one of the means or channels of general communication, information, or entertainment in society, such as newspapers, radio, or television."[9]

Anarchist group ANA Regensburg hosted my online-presentation on 16th of May 2024, in which I discussed tactics of anti-war activism in Russia, and reasons why the anti-war movement has not been able to make an impact to change the course of events yet. Cases of anarchists repressed for anti-war activities are presented, as well as strategies of support for political prisoners, and modest successes in supporting their struggles.

CLASS : VII

CHAPTER: 6 – Understanding Media
2. Media
Media is the plural form of the word
‘medium’ and it describes the various ways
through which we communicate in society.
There is one word that is often used to
collectively refer to the radio, TV, newspapers,
Internet and several other forms of
communication. This word is ‘media’
3. Media refers to all means of communication,
everything ranging from a phone call to the
evening news on TV can be called media.
TV, radio and newspapers are a form of media that
reaches millions of people, or the masses, across
the country and the world and, thus, they are
called mass media.
Media: Cont…
7. Media and Technology
Newspapers, television and radio can reach millions
of people because they use certain technologies.
Technology does more than this. It also changes the
ways in which we think about our lives.
8. Media and Technology: Cont...
Television has enabled us to think of
ourselves as members of a larger global
world.
Television images travel huge distances
through satellites and cables.
9. Media and Technology: Cont...
The widespread use of the Internet is a
recent phenomenon.
The technology that mass media uses
keeps changing.
10. Media and Money
The technologies that mass media use keep
changing and so a lot of money is spent on
getting the latest technology.
Due to these costs, the mass media needs a
great deal of money to do its work.
11. Media and Money : Cont...
As a result, most television channels and
newspapers are part of big business houses.
Mass media is constantly thinking of ways
to make money by advertising different
things like cars, chocolatés, clothes, mobile
phones, etc.
12. Media and Democracy
In a democracy, the media plays a very
important role in providing news and
discussing events taking place in the country
and the world.
It is on the basis of this information that
citizens can, for example, learn how
government works. And often, if they wish to,
they can take action on the basis of these
news stories.
13. Media and Democracy: Cont...
Some of the ways in which they can do this
is by writing letters to the concerned minister,
organizing a public protest, starting a signature
campaign, asking the government to rethink its
programme, etc.
Given the role that the media plays in providing
information, it is important that the information
be balanced.
14. Balanced Media Reporting
A balanced report is one that discusses all points of
view of a particular story and then leaves it to the
readers to make up their minds.
Writing a balanced report, however, depends on
the media being independent.
An independent media means that no one should
control and influence its coverage of news.
15. Balanced Media Reporting: Cont…
No one should tell the media what can be
included and what should not be included
in a news story.
An independent media is important in a
democracy.
16. Censorship
When the government prevents either a news
item, or scenes from a movie, or the lyrics of a
song from being shared with the larger public,
this is referred to as censorship.
While the government does continue to censor
films, it does not really censor the media’s
coverage of news.
17. Censorship: Cont…
Despite the absence of censorship by the
government, most newspapers nowadays still
fail to provide a balanced story.
The reasons for this are complicated. Persons
who research the media have said that this
happens because business houses control the
media.
18. Setting Agendas
By focusing on particular issues, the media
influences our thoughts, feelings and actions,
and brings those issues to our attention.
Due to the significant influence it plays in
our lives and in shaping our thoughts, it is
commonly said that the media ‘sets the agenda’.
19. Social advertising
Social advertisements refer to advertisements
made by the Government or private agencies
that have a larger message for society.
Local media
When main stream media not interested in
covering ‘small’ issues that involve ordinary
people and their daily lives, several local groups
have come forward to start their own media.
This is called Local media.
20. Summary
❖ As citizens of a democracy, the media has a very important
role to play in our lives because it is through the media that we
hear about issues related to the working of the government.
❖ The media decides what to focus on and in this way it ‘sets the
agenda’.
❖ The government can, at times, prevent the media from
publishing a story and this is called censorship.
❖ Nowadays, media’s close relationship with business often
means that a balanced report is difficult to come by.
❖ We, therefore, need to analyze the news critically.
21. Glossary
❖ Publish: This refers to news reports, articles, interviews,
stories, etc., that are printed in newspapers, magazines and books
for a wide audience to read.
❖ Censorship: This refers to the powers that government has to
disallow media from publishing or showing certain stories.
❖ Broadcast: In this chapter this word is used to refer to a TV or
radio programme that is widely transmitted.
❖ Public protest: When a large number of people come together and
openly state their opposition to some issue. Organising a rally,
starting a signature campaign, blocking roads etc. are some of the
ways in which this is done.
