2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
Ā
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasnāt one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
Ā
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesarās dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empireās birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empireās society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

4. What is Press / Media ?
ā¢ Press / Media is the link between the people of
a country to propagate the information from
one end of the country to the other either by
electronic means or by the means of print, i.e.
is either by Radio, Television, and Internet or by
News Papers.
5.
6. What is Nation ?
ā¢ Broadly speaking a Nation may refer to a
community of people who share common territory
and Government; and who often share common
Language, race and/or common History. In
international prospective Nation can be referred as
a Sovereign State. Therefore our country
Bangladesh is sovereign State comprising of races,
castes, sub-castes, regions, languages, and
religions.
7. Types of Press / Media ?
Media has become quite complex and in doing so, has evolved many distinct types
which can be studied separately from each other.
ā¢ Advertising media : various media, content, buying and placement for advertising.
ā¢ Broadcast media : communications delivered over mass electronic communication
networks.
ā¢ Digital media : electronic media used to store, transmit, and receive digitized
information.

content and processing and so onā¦.
8. What can Press / Media
changes?
ā¢ Our knowledge.
ā¢ Our behavior.
ā¢ Our attitude.
ā¢ Our emotions.
ā¢ Our political views.
9. Why Press / Media?
So, the question lies, why media?, why is it given so
much importance?...
The reason being that this is THE AGE OF INFORMATION
and having information or giving it can make a lot of
difference. And since media is the largest stakeholder as
far as information is concerned therefore it is mediaās job
to spread information, which it does brilliantly!
10. Why Press / Media?
Cont.ā¦
media can be controlled or manipulated and that means a lot of
false information being spread which in turn can trigger variable
responses from the masses or certain groups among them, or,
un trigger responses that should have been triggered!....
Continuous exposure to media reports can trigger variable or
distinct physiological responses. They can be -
ā¢ Fear
ā¢ Sadness
ā¢ Anger
11. Roles of press / media
Media is considered as "mirror" of the modern society.
In the world of today, media as necessary as food and clothing. The
newspapers can play a very vital role in the reconstruction and
regeneration of a nation by highlighting and pin-pointing the social,
economic and moral evils in the society. Can be helpful in eradicating
these evils from the society. They can also start propaganda against the
economic evils like short-weights and measures, smuggling. Black-
marketing income tax evasion hoarding corruption and bribery. THUS the
newspapers can help greatly in the nation- building activities.
Newspapers provide some material for every type of interest. They give
us stories, the crossword puzzles, the post page, the expert's comments
on certain affairs of national and international importance.
12. Roles of press / media Cont.ā¦
ā¢ The media helps to bring out the hidden talents of the people. The
children learn many good things through media.
ā¢ By reading newspaper, the children learn many things, their reading
habit increases and their vocabulary enhances by learning new words.
Their knowledge increases by watching geographical channel, quiz
programs and speeches by famous personalities of different fields.
ā¢ The cartoon channels make the children happy.
ā¢ The games increase their logical thinking power and grasping of things.
The attitude, approach and behaviour of the common people will also
change, when exposed to media.
ā¢ The media conducts polls and let public to take part in social issues.
Through bogging in the internet and writing letters to the editor in
newspapers, many people give voice about their opinion in different
political and social matters.
13. During the past few decades media has evolved from being a piece of
paper to an industry that can, at itās best, can topple governments, make
a superstar out of someone, or, spread some good useful information
among people, make them aware of their surroundings, know their or
other peopleās rights!
Media has a constructive role to play for the society. Today News
Channels and even some Newspapers are mouthpiece of some social
issues, which helps us to estimate the realities of lives. It is the fact that
in most of the eras, media were not being given free and fair chances to
explore the issues of society more openly than it is being given now; but
we can't deny this fact that the issues were always raised in order to
provide justice to the people.
Roles of press / media Cont.ā¦
14. The role of media in education and health sector is far more
important Learning, nowadays, is not limited anymore in terms of
space, time, and medium as the use of media, especially internet,
has contributed a lot towards education than its role in the election
campaigns. It's the job of the media to show the true picture of the
society.
Media is the most powerful tool of communication. It helps
promoting the right things on right time. It gives a real exposure to
the mass audience about what is right or wrong. Even though media
is linked with blaming fake news every time on terrorist attacks by
saying directly Muslim fundamentalist hand in attack without
properly investigating but on the safe side, it helps a lot to inform us
about the realities as well.
Roles of press / media Cont.ā¦
15. Press / media should be
ļ¼Positive
ļ¼Creative
ļ¼Informative
ļ¼Motivating
ļ¼Entertaining
16. Conclusion
ā¢ Journalists, as well as Media should be committed and self
dependable. They should express social responsibilities that
would invariably sustain the growth of micro ethno system in
the nation, aid the political terrain, and eliminate friction in
human relationships and other sectors of the country. As the
watch dog of society, they are responsible to the people and
can also help in the elimination of social vices confronting
humanity and National Integrity.
