Month 3: Splash Area Construction, so far, has gone as planned, until a three

On the negative or less optimistic side, it seems to be universally accepted that
college education is a good thing; however, thousands of colleges and millions of
students spend vast amounts of time and money chasing some sort of degree,
diploma or certificate. But what is the value of these qualifications? Most college
students (me included) gets brainwashed or sidetracked by administrators of
education. They make it seems as though having a college education is the only
way doors will open for students. Certificates, diplomas, and degrees are held up as
a status symbol and the key to money, power and success. However, the truly
powerful are not those with degrees, but people who stand back and look at what is
really important in life. These people are found in every part of society. Take my
present boss for instance, Carol Levine. Carol never attended college; she actually
was a high school drop out who eventually went on to receiving her GED. Today she
is the general manager for a fortune 500 company which is also one of Florida s

Good morning/ afternoon,
My name is Mary Doe and it is an honour to represent the Queensland Youth
Parliament during reconciliation week. This presentation will focus on Fred Hollows
significance in promoting change for Indigenous Australia. As you may well know
Fred Hollows was an able advocate for Indigenous health and focused much of his life
on ending curable blindness among numerous Indigenous communities.
Paragraph 1 Who is Fred Hollows and what were his main achievements.
Fred Hollows was born in New Zealand in 1929. He was not only a terrific
ophthalmologist but also a skilled surgeon and social justice activist, as he believed
everyone was equal due to his respectful and non judgemental family upbringing.
Initially Fred wanted to work in the church but later changed his mind to medicine
after working in a mental health hospital. At the age of 22, he started Medical school
at the University of Otago and then in 1965 to continue his ophthalmologic work.
Paragraph 2 Career beginnings
Fred started his medical career by attending the University of Otago Medical School
in 1951, at the age of 22. Fred held many different positions in his early career
including being a medical intern, a house surgeon and a clinician before specialising
in Ophthalmology. After qualifying as an ophthalmologist Fred worked all around
New Zealand including Wellington Hospital, which was the biggest in the country.

You know when you discover a new word and all of a sudden you notice everyone
using it in their vocabulary? Paradigm shift was something I learnt the first time
when my anthropology professor used it, and then three days later I heard my

The daughter is getting married to a man she doesn t know very well and twelve
year old Siddhima is old enough to understand the concept of an arranged marriage
but she isn t OK with it. She still has to defend the idea to those who don t

Maps are considered as fundamental to society as language and records. They are
meant to be used as a tool to record and store information. The invention of maps was
crucial in the course of Western Civilization because it was deemed an inventory that
facilitated in unifying: political, legal, and economic rights of societies (Moran).
Consequently, allowing societies to economically prosper with one another. Not only
that, the invention of maps was also considered fundamental on military and
administrative aspects of colonies since the more control an empire gained, the more
knowledge of boundaries, physical features, or road networks was needed. Moreover,
maps allowed explorers to return to the colonies they discovered and claimed
sovereignty over them. With this said, the invention that has most influenced the
course of Western Civilization was the invention of maps. Maps were influential
during the Western Civilization since it facilitated in unifying: political, legal, and

40. How Did Portuguese Establish A Colony In Portugal...
Portuguese was interested in establishing a colony in Luanda (present Angola) in the
sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. This was going to threaten the territorial control
and economic power of states on the African coast. It was the lucrative slave trade
that prompted this initiative by the Portuguese. They needed to be in proximity of the
supply (Africans) so they could capture and ship the slaves more efficiently to the
New World colonies thereby increasing their profits. Portugal had decided it was

In Henry David Thoreau s essay Resistance to Civil Government, he recants the
classic story of his night and jail. Thoreau goes into depth on what caused him to
go to jail, how his conscious led him to get there, and how the consequences were
already apparent to him before he disobeyed the unjust laws being enforced upon
him. In his essay, Thoreau urges his readers to do three things. Thoreau wants his
readers to acknowledge that the governments gets perverted and abused, disobey
laws that go against our conscience with consequences in mind, and only follow
laws if they are in line with the principles that come with our conscience. Thoreau
wants these assertions to be accomplished by readers independently. He wants the
readers to understand that governments are not always correct, and that they
should disobey the law if it goes against what they believe. He also urges readers to
not wait for their fellow man, because if everyone were to do that, then nothing
would change and then you would be regretfully supporting laws that you are
against. Thoreau s argumentative style is one that focuses on Individualism.
Thoreau s argument is also effective as it leads citizens to want to take a stand
based on what is just, rather than what is the law, and because his essay went on to
influence the major civil rights movements in India and America under Gandhi and
Martin Luther King Jr. Thoreau s argument is effective, as it places an
individualistic responsibility on his readers to strive for a better government by
acknowledging that governments can become perverted and abused, by following
laws that correspond do our moral beliefs and conscience, and by disobeying laws
that seem unjust and accepting the consequences for doing so, thus becoming a civil
disobedient. In correspondence with Thoreau s essay, he wants his readers to
acknowledge that governments are sometimes perverted and abused. He believes that
the U.S. Government is sometimes perverted and abusive. An example that Thoreau
gives for the federal government being perverted and abused, is the Mexican war.

Characteristics of Advisor Using Theory Some of the theories I tend to rely on when
working with my students are Kneflekamp Widick s (1999) developmental
instruction model, Schlossberg s (1989) mattering and marginality theory, RГ©ndon
s (1994) validation theory, and Stanford s (1966) challenge and support theory(as
cited in Patton, Renn, Guido, Quaye, 2016). When considering the four variables of
challenge and support mentioned in Knefelkamp Widick s (1999) theory, I used the
structure and diversity components to help Carolyn consider other career possibilities
besides business, while explaining the value behind the liberal artscurriculum the

Finally, in contrast to Schlossberg s (1989) theory, Stanford s (1966) challenge and
support model addressed the dream, design, deliver, and don t settle phases of
appreciative advising, since I not only challenged Carolyn to think about her
social and academic goals, but also encouraged her to take advantage of her
required coursework, as well as the number of on campus resources available to
her. While I find that the aforementioned theories are the ones I use most often in
my work with students, I believe that Baxter Magolda s (1992) self authorship
theory gave me a better understanding of why Carolyn was so rash to make
different assumptions about her professor, academic ability, and coursework.
Carolyn was typical of many traditional first year students in that they tend to view
knowledge as certain. However, as Carolyn progresses through her college career, it
will be important for me to continue to challenge her ways of knowing, similar to
what I did during our advising session.
Recommendations
Although I found my advising session with Carolyn to go well, I believe there is
more I could do in order to make our future advising appointments more meaningful.
One observation I noticed was that although I was focused on listening to what
Carolyn had to say, I had sat very still, which could have led Carolyn to be unsure of
what I was thinking. I
