The Missiles and Fire Control business unit of global aerospace manufacturer Lockheed Martin creates specialized products that range from missile defense systems and precision engagement weapons to creating heat rejection panels to protect those living aboard the International Space Station. Missiles and Fire Control has long used SAP software for its enterprise resource planning. Since migrating its SAP infrastructure from a UNIX/Oracle solution to Microsoft® SQL Server® Enterprise Edition (64-bit), the company reports enhanced performance and reliability, and a lower total cost of ownership including a significant savings in software and maintenance costs. Looking ahead to upgrading to SQL Server 2008, the company’s internal testing has found that the new Row Compression feature reduces database sizes by 37 percent while enhancing performance of some runs by more than 80 percent. - Further proof points pointing to higher performance: Kimball International (http://www.microsoft.com/casestudies/Case_Study_Detail.aspx?CaseStudyID=4000003983) Diversified manufacturer Kimball International migrated its SAP infrastructure to the Microsoft Application Platform and got greater processing power. This has been especially evident in its two ECC 5.0 ERP systems. “We made a number of measurements before and after the migration, and have seen a 30 percent to 50 percent increase in processing speeds,” says Sam Mason, Engineer, SAP Basis Infrastructure at Kimball International. “Some gains are even greater. We had a batch job that used to run for 64 hours before the migration that is now completed in 13 hours, so processing time in some cases has been reduced by more than 75 percent.” The performance enhancements were noticeable by internal users, some of whom contacted IT after the migration to ask about the faster processing times they were seeing. “ The ECC ERP system supporting the Furniture group is our largest database at more than 5 terabytes,” Kemker says. “We were impressed that after the migration we saw significant performance improvements in 13 of 14 measured metrics.” DenizBank (http://www.microsoft.com/casestudies/Case_Study_Detail.aspx?casestudyid=4000003792) DenizBank adopted the Microsoft Application Platform to develop a robust infrastructure that could support all banking services reliably. The Web-based infrastructure is processing a huge volume of bank transactions—a year’s worth from all 385 branches in just eight hours. This massive increase in efficiency means DenizBank employees gain access to banking data faster for smarter business decisions. Research has shown it would take 600 full-time employees to process the same kind of workload. KAS Bank (http://www.microsoft.com/casestudies/Case_Study_Detail.aspx?casestudyid=4000003002) KAS Bank adopted the Microsoft Application Platform to provide customers with faster, more reliable corporate actions, settlements, and payments processing, while lowering operational costs. The first step was to check if a new environment could handle high levels of straight through processing without any reduction in performance. “ After rigorous benchmark testing, multi-network interface Microsoft BizTalk Server, with its BizTalk Accelerator for SWIFT, emerged as the most suitable choice,” says Van der Horst. “The proof of concept showed that Microsoft came out best on both performance and cost.” 06/01/10 12:54 © 2007 Microsoft Corporation.
