So, what is DevOps exactly? DevOps is a term for a group of concepts that, while not all new, have catalyzed into a movement and are rapidly spreading. Like any new and popular term, people have different and sometimes contradictory perceptions of what it is. Currently, DevOps is more like a philosophical movement, and not yet a precise collection of practices, descriptive or prescriptive (e.g., CMM-I, ITIL, Agile, etc.). In his book The Phoenix Project, Gene Kim, an important DevOps influencer, describes a model how an IT organization can transition to a DevOps model to facilitate fast, rapid, reliable flow of features into production and, ultimately, into the hands of users. His model is called the 3 Ways of DevOps. The 3 ways describe the values and philosophies that frame the processes, procedures, practices of DevOps.

Automated Release Pipelines with Azure DevOps
What's DevOps and how do you make it work using Microsoft’s Azure DevOps service? At its core, DevOps is about automating every last thing that you can possibly automate between development and production. Basically, automate away all the annoying & tedious stuff that distracts you from being able to quickly and easily deliver done, working software.
This session will be a mix of the practical (75%) and the theoretical (25%). We'll start by talking about the DevOps mindset and why you should even care about DevOps. From there, we'll dive in to the skills and practices you'll need in order to implement an automated, multi-environment DevOps pipeline using Azure DevOps.
The demo will to take an existing ASP.NET Core application with automated tests, commit it to Git, create automated builds, and an automated release pipeline that'll take the application from development to test to production.

Big innovation and research projects usually require merging contributions form organizations with expertise in different domains. Managing and participating in multi-company projects that use multiple state-of-the-art technologies constitute a challenging activity due to many factors such as integration inexperience, evolv-ing components, tentative requirements, independent teams or independent man-agement centers. In the late nineties and in the early years of 2000, several meth-odologies arose with the focus on fast releases of working software, commonly known as agile, that aimed to address many of the challenges that this kind of projects face. However, in most cases, these methodologies were not fully adoptable as the automation investment was too high and it was not recoverable during the duration of the project. The global servitization trend and the appear-ance of approaches, such as DevOps, to support the continuous and fast adjust-ment of those services to stay in business has also impacted innovation and re-search projects. On one hand, matured technologies that reduce the automation investment have arisen. On the other hand, whenever it makes sense, services which benefit from the application of DevOps approaches are required to be im-plemented. This paper explains the implementation of DevOps approaches to support the agile development in the context of innovation and research projects. It also describes two practical implementation cases where such approaches were implemented and how they evolved in the course of the time.

In some DevOps models, quality assurance and security teams may also become more tightly integrated with development and operations and throughout the application lifecycle. When security is the focus of everyone on a DevOps team, this is sometimes referred to as DevSecOps.
These teams use practices to automate processes that historically have been manual and slow. They use a technology stack and tooling which help them operate and evolve applications quickly and reliably. These tools also help engineers independently accomplish tasks (for example, deploying code or provisioning infrastructure) that normally would have required help from other teams, and this further increases a team’s velocity to know more about the DevOps.

Modernize Java Apps on Microsoft Azure
The Java ecosystem is very broad, with different technologies including Java SE, Java EE/Jakarta EE, Spring, numerous application servers, and other frameworks. We see three broad patterns for running Java applications in the cloud, depending on how much control or productivity you need.

In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has made substantial investments in meeting evolving scientific, technical, and policy driven demands on storing, managing, and delivering data. As these demands continue to grow in complexity and scale, the USGS must continue to explore innovative solutions to improve its management, curation, sharing, delivering, and preservation approaches for large-scale research data. Supporting these needs, the USGS has partnered with the University of Chicago-Globus to research and develop advanced repository components and workflows leveraging its current investment in Globus. The primary outcome of this partnership includes the development of a prototype enterprise repository, driven by USGS Data Release requirements, through exploration and implementation of the entire suite of the Globus platform offerings, including Globus Flow, Globus Auth, Globus Transfer, and Globus Search. This presentation will provide insights into this research partnership, introduce the unique requirements and challenges being addressed and provide relevant project progress.
