Chapter SIX
Computer Organization
Computer Organization
 Computer Organization includes the high level aspects of a
design, such as memory system, the bus structure and the
design of the internal CPU.
 The significant components of Computer organization are
ALU, CPU, memory and memory organization
 Computer Organization is concerned with the structure and
behavior of a computer system as seen by the user.
 It deals with the components of a connection in a system.
 Computer Organization tells us how exactly all the units in
the system are arranged and interconnected.
 Is how operational attributes/units are linked together &
contribute to realize the architectural specifications
 HOW the ISA is implemented (physical view)
 Attributes:- Instruction set, Number of bits used for data
representation , I/O mechanisms and Addressing techniques
MEMORY ORGANIZATION
5.1. Computer memory system overview
 A memory is just like a human brain. It is used to store
data and instructions.
 Computer memory is the storage space in the
computer, where data is to be processed and
instructions required for processing are stored.
 The memory is divided into large numberOf small parts
called cells.
 Memory is the faculty of the brain by which data or
information is encoded, stored, and retrieved when
needed. It is the retention of information over time for
the purpose of influencing future action.
 Different kinds, based on:- Technology, Organization,
performance, and cost
